  1. A first day cover is a specially designed envelope, bearing newly issued postage stamps which were postmarked on the first day that those stamps were placed on sale by the Post Office.

The football covers are always associated with a special match rather than a new issue of stamps although many football covers have a number of different stamps on them as a full issue of stamps was usually used.

Football covers also include a insert card giving details of the reason for the cover.

Here is a list of the covers featuring Oldham Athletic (as I know of) - also as a completist I have tried to collect each cover with a different value stamp for each issue.

    1974 Division 3 Champions - Oldham 1 Manchester United 0 - 3 1/2p, 4p, 4 1/2p + 1 1/2p charity stamp, 4 1/2p, 8p - 250 issued

  3. The three versions are

Would be interested if collectors could send me a list of what they have so I can add them to my record of existing.

Also the Bolton Wanderers postponed game on 3 DEcember - there is a programme for that game

Lastly the 88/89 season programmes have some games with upto three covers althouh the Oxford game that season is eartly doors and Ive only seen one with Tommy Wright on cover.

Richard -- do you collect teamsheets and can you advise best place to get hold of some on Saturday?

  4. That is amost correct.

There where three base covers printed at the start of the season and the match details printed on top for each game.

At the start of the season a different base was used for each game but around November different covers started to be used for the same game.

After the Manchester United game at Christmas all three covers where used for each game.

The white ones (albino) are printer errors..

  5. Oldham Athletic Ladies can take a massive step to the league title this Sunday when they play Manchester Girls in the Second Division of the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League.

With just three games of the season remaining they play leaders placed Manchester Girls at home.

Oldham Athletic Ladies had a poor start to the season picking up just one point from their first three games but since the turn of October they have put together a 10 win 1 draw unbeaten run scoring 64 goals in the process.

Manchester Girls lead the league with 34 points from 14 games and a +70 Goal Difference but have only two games left. Oldham Athletic Ladies have 32 points from 13 games and a +37 goal difference.

Oldham Athletic Ladies just have to avoid defeat on Sunday to close in on the title.

Why not come along and support the Ladies team. The game this Sunday is at Oldham Academy North on Broadway OL2 5BF. Kick off is 2pm and it is free to get in.

  10. Which ones do you think will be taken on Gary? Seems, only from people's judgements on here, that Riley, Belezika and Burns are the most highly rated. Riley is quite amusing on twitter but I'm not sure that's going to help or hinder his cause...

Ryan Burns has changed from a winger to central midfield this season and struggled early on but has looked good and solid since christmas.

Kyle Riley had a injury that really hampered development after the youth cup game at Norwich in December. Has really struggled to make any impact after coming back.

Glen Belezika very raw and nervous on the ball. Makes lots of mistakes but last few games since he returned from lengthly layoff has looked a lot better.

Danny Bell dont know if injured but not seen him around for a few weeks.

Jack Laird diminutive forward with a very short temper. Not as bad a Andrew Crompton last season though. Excellent striker of a dead ball. Thought he would kick on after he bacame a dad in December but just hasnt happened for him.

Sam Fitzgerald solid midfielder who does his job quietly.

Dale Connor looked good last season but injuries and lack of reserve games this time have hampered. Some excellent keepers behind him.

Alex Parkes appeared to put a lot of weight on closed season but a lot of that had turned to muscle. Guess that happens with kids. A lot of the time had two mens work to do havng to cover for Glen and he struggled until Glen was injured. For that period he was outstanding at the back. Composed on the ball and distributed well. Again not Glen is back looks nervous.

A brief look at the 8 scholars. I think we gave 5 pro's last season. This year Ryan Burns and Alex Parkes would be my bet.

  11. I believe that tomorrow is the day when the second year scholars are either offered a pro-contract or told they are going to be released.

Tony Philiskirk has done a fine job again bringing on a group schoolboys, learning them the ropes and watching them change along the way.

I've watched 95% of their games these last two years and I have enjoyed every minute of it.

Kyle Riley, Ryan Burns, Glen Belezika, Sam Fitzgerald, Danny Bell, Dale Connor, Alex Parkes and Jack Laird whatever the future holds, Thank you and good luck.

  12. It might be just me but the likes of Millar, McGrath, and Brooke seem to have been around for ages but not been able to break into the first team. Anyone who watches the reserves care to comment on how they are doing? Get rid if they aren't good enough.

Also Bembo-Lita looked promising at the start of the season. He not back from his injury yet?

Phil McGrath has only just started training again this week after his pre-season injury.

Kirk looks good in patches but as he hits form he is injured again.

Matt Carr is on loan at Woodley Sports.

  13. Three game around the BP sides this week.

The youth team have a Lancashire Youth Cup Semi Final on Monday.

Preston North End are the opponents at Chapel Road. Kick off is 14.00 and Ive been assured there will be no early start. There is no charge for entry.

Preston are perenially a strong side under Jamie Hoyland. They lead the Youth Alliance Northen table with 15 wins & 2 draws from 20 games with a +29 GD. The two league games between the teams have both ended in draws 2-2 at Chapel Road on Aug 27 and 0-0 at Springfields on Oct 22. The game will go to penalties if the sides are level after 90 minutes. Blackpool or Burnley at home await the winners in the final.

Tuesday the first team take to the road with a re-arranged game at Brentford. KO 19.45.

Saturday the first team are at home to Charlton Athletic 15.00 KO.

There are no games for the Reserves or Ladies team.

For those who have asked: After yesterdays games I am on 97 games for the season, the Charlton Athletic game will be my 100th. Am on target for 113 (114 if youths win semi final). Not included in this is 15 (4 more games to go) Ladies games.

  14. The first team have their final Golden Ticket game on Tuesday at 19.45 against Leyton Orient.

You wait ages for a bus then two come along together - well the reserves after their first home game in three months have another game at home this week.

Tranmere Rovers are the visitors on Wednesday at Chapel Road. KO is 14.00 - though last weeks game against Wrexham kicked off early at 13.45.

Saturday morning the youth team have their penultimate home league game against Shrewsbury Town at Chapel Road. With the visitors making a long journey dont be surprised if you turn up at the scheduled start time of 11am and they have been playing 15 mins.

Finally in the afternoon the first team take to the road to Notts. County's meadow lane.

    OLDHAM ATHLETIC LADIES GAME DETAILS

The Ladies have a rearranged game this afternoon at AFC Urmston Meadowside with a 12.15 KO. Pitch is at Daveyhulme Road M41 8QA.

  15. As the seasoned reserves watcher you are - I guess you'll be watching?

Can you do a quick scouting report on 2 elements of this game please Gary?

How sharp does Diallo look after his injury?

What is Irwin Jnr like - with a view to being a midfield option for us?

    ta,

Sorry for not replying before - I was straight off to a night shift from the game.

Echo BP1960's comments - with another reserve game next Wednesday Diallo will be all the sharper. I would leave first team duty until after then unless there is dire need for someone to warm the subs bench.

Twas a very young reserve side yesterday - Diallo was the only player over 19 playing against a more experienced Wrexham and they aquitted themselves well. Kyle Riley has quite a few problems up against the stalwart Glenn Little.

As for Glen Belezika - that was probably his best game. For me though he makes far too many mistakes and the defenders around him are always wary when he is on the ball.

Alex Parkes suffered a lot early in the season because of this and it is noticable that Parkes has been outstanding for the Youth's while Glen has been out for 3 months'ish.

  16. The first team make the trip to Hartlepool United on Tuesday 19.45 KO.

As posted this week its £25 to get in. Should you want to pay to stand up its £20 cash entry on turnstiles Niramax 9, 10 & 11. This is for information only and I dont suggest you do that so it is not with the away supporters.

The reserves finally have a game this week (the first home game since December). Wednesday at 14.00 at Chapel Road. Wrexham are the visitors. Entry is £2 adults £1 concessions. ST holder free on porudtion of Voucher 8. BTW if you are the person who has been using last seasons reserve vouchers to get in for nowt I'll have me eye out this week. Entry monies this season go to TP for Youth team/CoE use.

Mrs D will again be doing refreshments - including I am told - hot bacon sarnies and a brew for £2.50. Again half the profits taken at the refreshments will go to TP. From the two sources so far we have put aside about £250.

The Youth team have a free Saturday.

Saturday afternoon the first team are at home to Bournemouth (15.00 KO)

I'm closing in on 100 games again and am on track to beat last seasons 109 games. Currently on 91 and even without going to Hartlepool should make 111. This doesnt include the 14 Latics Ladies games.

Talking of the Ladies team the opponents for today and next week Failsworth Athletic have had all thier fixtures to the end of season postponed. As such next Sunday a game postponed from earlier this season has been arranged. Urmston Meadowside are the hosts at Daveyhulme Road. Postcode for SatNav is M41 8QA. KO 12.15. Aleady know what will happen when Yvonne sees it is close to the Trafford Center :disappointed:

  17. Possibly.

Or, if you look on the official site Reid is wearing a long sleeved shirt in the game against Sheff Utd at home but in the latest gallery action against Yeovil he is wearing a short sleeved one, perhaps he has switched to the short sleeves and the club want to cash in on the long sleeved one?

Only Scapuzzi has had a long sleeved shirt all the others have been short sleeved on top of white long sleeved "vest"
