You're right, but I think there's reasons for optimism. It was better than anything we saw under Unsworth...

I think Mellon will have to do a bit of tinkering with what he's got before he knows who he wants to keep and where he needs to strengthen. It might mean writing off this season, but it might not because there's a long way to go and we're not that far behind.

At Newport I'd really like to give some of the fringe players a run out. Two different strikes, Tollitt and Norman even given a run out...

Although he wouldn’t have been my choice I’ve far more faith in Mellon than I ever had in Unsworth and happy with him and think he’ll sort us out.

I suppose I just get frustrated as I think we should be so much better.

If you said at the start of the season we’d be mid table after 18 games I’d have been well pissed off, and I just can’t get excited at looking at the league table to see how many points we are off seventh place.

It's better than losing to Alty, isn't it? We came from behind twice which, to me, shows some character. The varying opinions here is nothing unusual, I didn't see or hear the game but the after reading the official report, I saw glimmers of hope.

It's obvious that Mellon is going to run his eye over all the players in a match situation, he's going to bring some in as well as offload, if possible. From his initial interview, I thought Mellon viewed wingers as old school and not essential. Maybe just my take. Will he go down that route, I'm not so sure.

But a home draw against anyone in this division is not a good result. Just because it’s better than losing doesn’t make it good

It’s a team currently in the play offs so that’s your gauge. There will obviously be additions, yes we missed chances but Micky isn’t stupid. He knows what we need.

My gauge is we shouldn’t be in Mid table, we should be challenging at the top of the league. Altrincham , after what I’ve seen after playing them twice, shouldn’t be above us, so I’m not celebrating a home draw.

Garbage? Off the back of a dreadful performance against a team at the bottom, we've fought back to draw against a team in 5th place. Yes, you need to win your home games, but at least this is a response to Tuesday, with players (Freeman, McGahey, Nuttall) who haven't had much match time lately, and a manager in his third game. Patience is needed.

Surely we’re not dressing a draw at home to Altrincham as a good result?

The great Brian Clough was probably a prime example of getting a team that would come together to be more than the sum of its parts. We've signed a load of individuals that have a net talent that matches anyone in the division but the squad just doesn't have the right chemistry to come together.

So we are not cursed we just don't sign the right players.

This has come about through our much lauded recruitment system, that the podcast lads were wetting themselves about last year.

Unsworth didn’t have a clue what he was doing, so we were recruiting players to fit a system that didn’t really exist.

The teams we were apparently copying have had an established identity so know what they’re doing and it works for them. We were just starting out with a numpty in charge and ended up with a mishmash of a squad with no set style of play.

Its a good idea in principal but we need to establish a playing style or culture and have some success first before we go down that route.

He now needs to starting thinking "What the the fuck do I have to do to make it better?"
I'm confident Mellon will work with him, and the team, to make improvements.

Oh I agree, but I can see why he always seems pissed off.

He can’t change it on his own though, and we need all the others to step up too, which show’s little sign of happening.

Hopefully Mellon can sort it out.

Has he got the right attitude?

I'm playing devil's advocate here a bit and it's hard to tell really, but I sort of get the impression he thinks he's made a mistake coming here.  I think he thought he'd have players around him that can supply him like he's been supplied at his former clubs (as we are the division's big fish..) and it'd be less taxing at his time of career, because it's a lower level.  And it hasn't worked out like that.

Anger can be a positive energy.  But I don't think stroppiness can.

He came here to the win the league., or at least have a good stab at it. He mentioned it a couple of times not long after signing, one being after his goal at Chesterfield shortly before Unsworth conceded it.

We’re nowhere near that and the team is nowhere near as good as he was no doubt led to believe it was, so I can see why he’s frustrated m, and probably thinking “what the fuck have I done?”

I remember us playing Tranmere at home a few years back - Jason McAteer was playing for them and I think their manager's son scored (a penalty?) for them. Great atmosphere that day, decent attendance and it was all a bit hostile. Every time McAteer got the ball, our fans launched into a collective Harry Enfield scouser impersonation, it was so funny. To be fair, McAteer himself was laughing long before the end of the match!

There was always a bit of a thing with Tranmere, then Ronnie Moore really stoked it up every time we played them. He loved going on about how we didn’t like him and he didn’t like us, then there was that when his son was ‘signing’ for us.

Like many of us older ones, I grew up hating Bolton, and to a lesser extent (although not by much) Blackburn and that still won’t leave me to this day.
Nothing will ever come close to my lifelong hatred of those red bastards though.

A battling win, as they say. It is the third consecutive match I've seen where we make a bright start and we had much the better of the first 20 minutes. We then retreat once a passing side begins to get going and it invites pressure and close calls, although I couldn't fault our defensive display. We are hard to beat, so that is a good foundation to build on.

However, our ability to build our own pressure, hold the ball for long spells in and beyond midfield, get in behind teams, and generally create chances is limited.

I've seen Green get some stick and I can't at all comment as I've not been to many games in the last 18 months, but I can see a decent player in there. He's the sort of player - pace and direct - that we lack. That isn't to say anything on his own consistency, but equally if he isn't getting the service or he cannot rely on the spine of the side holding the ball for long he's going to come across as someone largely absent from games.

Solid. Unbeaten in seven, into the FA Cup first round, and a Mellon's first game will be with an away following of several thousand. Slowly but surely we're seeing individuals and the group build a little bit of confidence.

Agree with a lot of this. We struggle to gain back control of games once we’ve lost it, retreat,  and the opposition dominate the ball.

Yesterday we kept our defensive shape very well, with Magehey holding his position well and Hogan having probably his best game for us.
I think Hobson’s at that level now where, although he’s clearly our best player, he won’t get many MOM awards because he hits high levels every week, whereas people tend to go for a player who surpasses his norm.

Lundstram has that lovely drop of the shoulders that takes players out of the game with one move, and once he’s up to full fitness should be a big asset.

We need more from midfield and out wide though, and hopefully Mellon can get us playing higher up the pitch so we can dominate more and Norwood doesn’t have to keep coming deep for the ball.

We have to impose ourselves more, but if he can make the right additions and get the best out of what we’ve currently got, then there’s still time to get up amongst the leaders

Bit unfair blaming Latics , they put them on sale as soon as they received them plus allowed you to buy online beforehand.

Alty & their printers fault , they even managed to print the wrong price on them.

Given it’s a qualifying cup game , stood in the open at one of the worst grounds in the league £20 is way too expensive . Given that both clubs need to agree a price reduction I don’t think you need to look too far to see who the greedy ones are!!

Just hope they spend some of the money improving the shitehole of a ground😡

If both clubs have to agree then we’re as greedy as them

A lot of people have changed their minds here. When DU was in charge, the fact we weren't firmly cemented in the top 3 as people expected has changed to the players aren't good enough. Which is it? Was it DUs coaching or players not good enough.

If they're not good enough may as well stay as we are. If it's a coaching issue then we only need 2 players really

There’s enough there to be challenging near the top of the league. We’re maybe not as good as we thought we were, but I’m sure we’re a lot better the man we’re showing

Tickets received Tuesday- on sale today to season ticket holders. Clear statement about when they go on open sale. Explanation and apologies for the delay. Extended opening hours.

Seems reasonable to me- bit tight to get one posted out if you cant get to the ground midweek though.

A simple article on the website over the weekend or yesterday saying they were waiting for the tickets, how many we were getting and would be on sale the minute they had them wouldn’t have gone amiss.

This has a feel of they they don't really want us to attend. For all the good happening at the club it seems like the ticketing side of things is being run by a bunch of amateurs.

Seems that way to me. All these ‘wonderful things going on behind the scenes’ doesn’t seem to extend to the ticket office or looking after fans who want to go to away games.

The last 4 performances have been utter horse shit and not a good audition for him to be the permanent manager...

Exactly. Everyone demanded change, nothing much has changed, now we need to leave it as it is.

Ive nothing against Thompson but think a lot of his popularity is down to the fact that he’s not David Unsworth.
