  1. Am I the only one who couldn't care less if he signs or not? Like everyone else I've only seem glimpses of him, and what I have seen doesn't give me the impression that he's a certain star of the future.

In my opinion he's nowhere near first team material, and the only reason he's knocking on the door is because we are crap. He's only young and he may well make it in time. Then again he might not. He signs, he doesn't sign, I'm just not that bothered.

  2. I'm moving offices at work and I've got quite a few Old Latics programmes that someone brought in for me a good while ago that I'm looking to offload. There are a good few of the old Boundary Bulletins from 1966-68 in one of them binders you used to get. There are also a few from the 90's including some Premier League ones. I don't want anything for them(although I might let you buy me a pint if you go in the White Hart pre or post match) as long as you can pick them up yourself, so if anyone's interested just PM me or reply on here and I'll sort them out and arrange to hand them over.

  3. Was saying to those I was sat with after about 55 mins how he was blowing. If he wasn't fatigued, we're watching different games.

I'm not really after picking holes in your comment anyway, you're entitled to your opinion, but I just think it's amazing you're worried enough for our L1 status this season to warrant the man be sacked, when under Talbot, we were far worse off (points-wise) with a bigger budget but you weren't worried enough then to make the same calls for a head. Seems grossly unfair on Penney when you compare the two scenarios.

League Position after 25 games under Talbot - 15th

Points under Talbot after 25 games - 32

Goals scored under Talbot after 25 games - 39

Now don't get me wrong, I'm on your side re Penney and was no fan of Talbot (although I never demanded his head on a plate early doors, unlike some I could mention), but at the moment things weren't as bad under him.

I know it got a lot worse but we didn't actually sink into the bottom four before he was given the bullet.

  4. Some good posts so far.

I think we can all agree that Dave's first season is not going according to plan, and consequenlty I don't think anyone would say that his is not culpable for that in terms of signings / tactics / team selection.

However at this stage you have two options you can support:

    (1) Continue to support the manager and believe that he will turn it round. Have confidence that he will learn more about the players in the squad and how to get the most out of them. That he can add one or two bew faces that will make the difference. Believe that whilst we are in the relegation zone, in terms of points on the board we are not that far off being an average team in this division, which given the resources available is a good position for us this year.

    (2) Dave Penny is not capable of improving the team and that if he stays relegation is inevitable AND that despite even less money due to his pay-off we can sign a manager that will be capable of improving the results with the same bunch of players (or ones the new person can attract).

I am willing to go with Option 1. Partly because I think that Dave can and will improve, partly because I think managers deserve a chance, but perhaps more importantly I don't think we will get anyone from following Option 2 will improve the situation.

    or

    (3) Continue to support the manager because you believe all managers should be given more time than half a season. Be prepared to let them rectify their mistakes, although from what you've seen so far you don't have that much confidence that this will happen.

  5. 2. The Penney forcing him out bit is utter rubbish. Tbh, its one of the best pieces of management he has done. He always wanted Gregan to stay, however not way at the same price as his contract for the past three years. Telling him to go away and think about it was very shrewd management - and it is paying off.

I have to say I agree with this. After the disruptive influence Gregan appeared to be last season he was the last player I wanted Penney to re-sign. I was glad when he was shown the door and gutted when given another chance, but it appears to have done the trick as he's been outstanding this season and I shudder to think where we'd be now if DP had come to me for advice on this one.

I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong (and I've had plenty of practice) but I certainly was on this one.

  6. Would much rather be a hated club in the Championship than an ignored one in League One.

What about a hated club in League One? And all this 'Marlon King deserves a second chance and we should sign him' bollocks you're spouting, I think you'll find he's had about ten chances already.

  7. Yeah, me too.

But surely a move from our traditional and spiritual home should garner a fair amount of opposition, if it was something people felt strongly about that is? Especially when many constantly bang the drum on here yet think it's pointless banging it directly to people that matter; The club.

Anyway, it's not even you that grates with me, it's people dead set against Failsworth (and there are some), yet don't have the backbone to confront the club about it with their fears. A few were there last night with concerns, but on the whole most were OK with a move to Failsworth and just wanted answers on other issues.

Anyway, off to bed. Those people know who they are.

I can agree with some of that, but I think that the reason many of those who strongly object to Failsworth aren't doing much about other than moan and groan on here is because we are being told that there is no option but to move. There's no alternative site, BP can't be redeveloped etc, it's got to be, and is going to be, Failsworth. Like it or lump it. You can call it a lack of backbone if you like, but many see (rightly or wrongly) that it's a fight they can't win.

There may be alternatives, but we are told not so that's what we have to believe. For example, i asked the question as to whether there was a fall back plan if the move fell through for whatever reason and the answer in no uncertain terms was 'No'. To be honest that was exactly the answer I expected, because if they'd have said "Well if Failsworth doesn't get through planning we'll have to look at a scaled down version of the BP redevelopment" then people would say "Well, why the hell aren't we doing that now?"

In my opinion, If Failsworth doesn't come off for whatetever reason ( and seeing as every other plan we've had has fallen by the wayside I wouldn't be surprised) then TTA would at least be duty bound to build a replacement for the Lookers stand as they knocked it down without good reason in the first place, but at the moment they're telling us that won't happen, so it's not an option for people to think about.

  8. As I've said elsewhere, I fully understand the reasoning behind it, particularly as the club has been allowed to fall so far behind where the real action is.

I just don't relish it or think that it will even work.

I think this statement by the Corp sums up my feelings about this whole move in a nutshell. I can just about get my head round why we need to move, and I can understand that that there is no other site applicable for what we need, but I just can’t get excited about it or envisage a rosy future there.

For me, Failsworth is geographically the worst site we could move to, as the arguments about whether it is in Oldham or Manchester will always rage. These ‘increased revenue streams’ have still not been identified, and as such I am very sceptical that an organization that is as shoddily run as OAFC is can suddenly turn its hand to ventures they’ve never been involved in before and turn over a £5000,000 or so yearly profit.

The capacity is another thorny issue as I’m with the Corp here, you don’t build a 12k (at best) seater stadium if you see yourself any higher in the food chain than we already are, and when the Chief Exec says we will never need more than a 15/16k stadium even if we reached the Premier League again because that’s all we got last time, then it shows that there really are problems at the helm of our club.

TTA have been great for us, but when they came their remit (that they set out) was to make us a self financing, Championship outfit. Now the Championship bit seems to have been conveniently dropped and I can’t remember it being mentioned once by the top table at the meeting the other night.

Self sufficiency at Failsworth seems to be the name of the game now. If we achieve it fine, but just like the team at the moment, I just can’t get excited about it.

  9. thats true there were negatives but name one game in the whole history of football when there has been an absolutley perfect performance from a whole team for the whole 90 minutes without any negatives at all. cant be done. its the negatives that we learn from.

wouldnt say im happy today but i never expected us to win today maybe get a point but it was always going to be a tough task. and i dare say there were possibly more positives than negatives. ye we lost 3-1 and played badly for about 70 mins yeat we still only lost through three indivudal errors. its frustrating but at it isnt like they were a class above and passed us off the pitch and carved us open everytime they went forward. someone has said in another thread that they had 3 shots on target they all came from 3 individual errors. take them out and we restricted them to no shots on target. get rid of the errors (easier said than done) and we will have a decent team thats hard to beat

Jesus Christ! I've heard some one eyed bollocks in my time but to practically say 'take away their three goals and they didn't have a shot on tareget' takes the buscuit. They were better than us and there's not really any disgrace in that, but we're always likely to let in goals and unless we learn how to start scoring there will be a lot more frustrating Saturday afternoons to come.

  10. The best I've ever heard TTA describe our budget as was top ten. As we finished 6th, 8th and we're 8th when he was sacked I don't think it can be said that he was/is a poor manager. He did OK, could have done better but could have done a whole lot worse.

Corney seems to say what suits him at the time. It was him who started the 'botton four budget' talk last season in an interview in 442. Then when everyone else starts mentioning it it became a top ten one. The club was apparently the farthest away from administration in our division not long ago, then we're dead in five years if we don't move to Failsworth, then at the forum, we'll still survive at BP but with hefty cut backs. Now apparently our budget is bigger than last years after being told there had been a reduction.

Anyway. people will always disagree on former manager and players (or even current ones). I suppose something had to be done to halt the slide we were in, and Penney's in charge now and if everybody backs him I'm sure we'll find him to be a good 'un. Whether he can take us up time will tell, but he'll have to do it quickly or the natives will soon be on his back.

  11. Just to put all this capacity talk into perspective, Brighton, who can't fill their 8,000 capacity ground are moving to a new stadium that will hold 20,000, and tomorrow's opponents Southend, who average around 7,500, having been given planning permission to build a new stadium with a 22,000 capacity.

I'm sure their more sensible fans will be up in arms at them wasting all that money on a load of empty seats. Or will they see it as a sign that their club obviously wants to go places?

  12. No i didnt send anything to Talbot, Moore or Sheridan. RM was a complete and utter prick who i didnt like from day on, Sheridan had everyones backing until near the end of his time which i agrred that he needed to go and talbot again had everyones backing until it was evident he wasnt good enough.

The thing with DP and the current situation is that unlike past managers whom everyone gave a large amount of time to get it right, he has been vilified this past month because we arent playing like real madrid or beating hartlepool.

Seems a lot of people like him and will give him time, but those that wont or dont want to certainly made that clear at the game, which I am sure he heard, so i am offering him support, if i was new to a job and had heard what i heard shouted at me on friday i know a nice constructive letter would be a little piece of good reading after friday night.

So you didn't like Moore from day one but that's OK, but anyone who's not taken to Penney is blasted by you. How does that work?

I'm completly behind Penney and feel IF given the time he could do a great job for us, but I've been all for giving every manager time (ie years, not months). Yet you're having a pop at everyone who it would appear feels the same way about our current incumbent as you did about Ronnie without giving either of them a chance.

  13. Isn't it about time we laid the notion of 'an apathetic Oldham public' to rest

The simple fact is that the club hasn't done enough to win backed lapsed supporters and create new ones. The false dawns don't really help. In fact, they are soul destroying for many former (and existing) supporters and make the club look like a bit of a joke.

Yes, but when we move to Failsworth we are going to 'market' the club to the people there. And it will happen, because 'Alan' said so at the forum.

  14. Total player salary budget (per annum) - £2M

(That's players' wages alone, including bonuses etc. It does not include football staff, non-football staff or any other outgoings)

Source? Simon Blitz, in the radio interview he did in the states a few months ago.

We know ground maintenance costs up to £400k per annum. So that leaves £100k for everything else ...

As for transparency, if you're a Trust member then you will have had the chance to see the annual balance sheet.

Yet Simon Corney at the recent forum stated that our playing budget for last year was between 1.5m/1.6m.

Maybe they don't talk to each other, but they can't both be right.

  15. Hang on a minute. Is everyone missing out on the fact that the Failsworth site is by far the better site to get access to from Manchester. So the scope for attracting new fans is miles bigger than somewhere like Ashton. This means the club can market in places like Salford, Prestwich, Cheetham Hill because it's only a ten minute tram ride from Manchester Victoria.

It isn't just the Failsworth residents the club should hope to be attractive to.

We've never marketed it to the people of Oldham so we're not going to do it anwhere else. It really made me laugh when Hardy said at the forum that moving to Failsworth would give us a new area of fans to target. Why the hell haven't we been targetting them for the last 20 years or so then. After all, it is apparently part of Oldham.

The marketing strategy in Failsworth would simply be 'plonk a new ground there, and hopefully some new people will come along.' Unless there's a fundamental change in the way the club is run from top to bottom, it won't matter where the new ground is or what these supposed 'additional revenue streams' are. We'll just struggle on regardless.
