I've just finished reading Tony Bugby's Latics book.  We had the goalkeeper Eddie Hopkinson on our books and he played 3 times in 1951/52.  That summer he was out of contract and the club "forgot" to offer him a new one so thinking he wasn't wanted he signed for Bolton.  He went on to be their record appearance holder and play 14 times for England.  File under great Latics cock ups.

His Son was a goalie also at my school along with steve taylor who played for us.

  2. Nice write up on official site remembering  the late great Alan Groves . Brings back so many memories , I even remember the picture shown on the back of the chron . Was a young lad then going home and away missing very few games great time to be a latics fan back then . Great the club have taken the time to do things like this ,

  3. Great performances from Green , Garner ,Fondop,Conlon, Hammond . Special mention for Sutton who came back in and was great. Their commentators said we are the best team they have played unlike any other side we dominated them to a man. Very encouraging performance we looked strong and well organised with threats.  Hammond looks like the player we thought Lundstram was midfield suddenly looks good.

When do we ever not need a result?
Ebbsfleet, our new major nemesis, drew 2-2 at Chesterfield today.

Above is a quote from the BBC comments page on the game. I know Chesterfield are well ahead of the rest of the league but that comment seems quite familiar. :D

Sometimes you can only play as well as you are allowed to play especially if you have a few players not at it 100%.

The real frustrating thing for me during these past two poor outings is that both Barnet and Bromley have slipped up too. We could have been right on their heels now.

That tells you everything about why we win  4 then have a blip . Micky Mellon has constantly harped on about consistency and the need to work towards being consitant. So far this season only Chesterfield have shown anything like being consistant , its a crap league this year no one else is anywhere near this year . And to be honest I dont think they are that good .The current top 10 below Chesterfield  are all inconsistent but in with a chance of a play off spot . For me we still need another midfielder in the Matty Palmer mould .We need to be in the play offs end of season which I would fancy us to possibly win . This league next year will be an absolute dog fight between about 6 teams with no run away leaders like the last two years.
