  1. We have a few injuries and a bit of illness in the camp, but the lineup just highlights how absolutely shite our recruitment has been the last 12 months.

Where’s Hope? That little run we had over xmas/new year when we looked slightly better he was in CM and thought he did alright.

Reid if fit should be on the bench too. Saw he was out and about in Manchester on his socials last night so knew he hadn’t travelled but if fit he should be making the bench.

    Where’s Walker? Injured? ill?

It’s bad McGahey is even making the bench still.

Hope we can get a result here but feels like we’ve gone from having a massive squad a couple of week back to throwing whoever we can at it now.

I’m feeling quite deflated about it all at the minute. All the money and the players recruited and it still feels like square pegs in round holes, due to a lack of form, increasingly poor tactics, players still playing out of position or shoehorned into unfamiliar positions to give them minutes.

I thought Mellon was doing a terrific job until recently - mainly because he was getting results with somebody else’s squad, we then had glimpse of his recruitment with stones and he was exactly what we needed. Things were looking really good. Since then we’ve made 5 signings and I’ve seen nothing to suggest they’ll improve us. (Before anyone questions how long they’ve been here, Stones looked a player the minute I saw him.) In fact they seem to have added to the malaise of who plays and who doesn’t.

I’m really hoping Mellon finds the key, and we finish in the play offs.  But in reality I think we’re going to be a mixed bag of indifferent results and finish top half.

    Yep, same here. Summarised perfectly.

Since the turn of the year it’s been pretty grim and we have ‘strengthened’ during that period. I’ll be honest I’m a bit baffled by most of the Jan recruitment.

Dorking away, won but we where atrocious and very lucky.

    Hendon at home disgrace.

Barnet at home we played decent. More solid than anything, but we looked decent.

    Woking at home, disgrace.

    Ebbsfleet away, disgrace.

It’s simply not good enough currently and Mellons recruitment hasn’t filled me with much confidence.

The tactics the last couple of games have been disgusting to watch. The longball stay solid tactic has been intentional and isn’t working.

  3. Surely someone will take a punt on Kurt in the next week or so. He scored a shit load last season, granted a division lower.

He’d be a decent signing for a bottom end NL side/NLN team. It’s just whether he would be willing to take a paycut to play regularly again as he’ll be on decent money here.

As mad as it sounds I think Shelton may get a move soon too. Again he’ll be on decent money so its whether he’ll take a bit less, but could see another NL side taking a chance on him. He had decent pedigree elsewhere.

The rest of the shite 2025 players I think we’re stuck with, at least until summer where we may be able to make something happen.

Defence were immense tonight, Hobson particularly played well and Hogan has found some form the last couple of weeks, carried the ball out of defence on several occasions and looks as fit as anyone in the squad, fair play. I thought the new lad Sai was playing it safe and needs to be a little bit braver particularly going forward as he linked up well at times as the game went on, understandable given it was his debut and the importance of the game, showed maturity after getting booked early on.

Conlon is a joy to watch, took the piss at times and was surprisingly good with his head, just what we needed in there and he's settled in almost instantly, he will be a big player for us in the run in. Sheron was his industrious self, terrific for the second goal when he cut out the ball and fed Fondop who was fouled, Lundstrum had his best game for us, more positive and covered some ground at both ends of the pitch. Midfield three worked incredibly hard all night.

Front two were great, Norwood is just a class above and Fondop was a nuisance all night long, add Dallas to that partnership and I think you'd have your front three.

Best part for me was the clean sheet, bodies on the line and a desire I feel that's been missing on occasions this season, personally I think that's as well as we've played all season at home, we got what we deserved and I'm hopeful now that we can really push on towards that top three finish.

    Bring on Saturday.

Funny how we all see games differently. Of the defence I thought Hobson was the poorest of the 3, his passing at times was appauling. (However I do think he’s the best of the 3, usually).

Hogan was absolutely immense tonight imo and just behind Conlon for MOTM, Raglan was good too. Didn’t give their 9 a sniff.

Agree on Conlon re: his heading, I mentioned that on twitter. He wins so many headers for someone who doesn’t look that tall/strong. Probably good timing.

Wish Conlons free kick had gone in!

  5. Hogan and Conlon where outstanding.

I actually thought Barnet looked the better side first 15-20 and should have scored. However after that felt we where by far better, once we got going they where poor.

    What a difference Conlon made.

Sachdev with a solid debut, had a great first half. Was quieter 2nd half but we where better and he was also on a yellow.

We look extremely solid and lovely to see bodies on the line defending at times. There was a goal mouth scramble in the 2nd half for Barnet and our players where doing anything and everything to prevent the goal.

Look forward to seeing Dallas, however I’ll be honest I’ve never been the biggest fan of Fondop but how can you drop him? I don’t think you can. He’s such a handful.

You can tell he frustrates the shite out of Norwood but yet, it works.

Yep, that would be mega. But I’ll believe when I see it.

    Strong as in reliable sources?

I think Dallas will happen. People who usually get things right have said he’s coming on loan. A couple of lower league transfer accounts that have a decent reputation are now mentioning it too.

Kanu seems to just be rumours. The Podcast last week did mention we had enquired.

It has to be big though surely? Dallas on loan would be a good signing, but MK rarely tweets about OAFC signings unless asked by fans on the odd occasion. This time he’s gone out of his way to hype up a signing for tomorrow essentially.

I think Dallas is happening, Kanu believe it when I see it!

  7. Kanu would be a huge statement of intent, one I mentioned in summer to go for if we’re serious about promotion.

Can’t see it though as much as I’d love it. The podcast guys said last week we had enquired though (apparently).

Didn’t posh go in for him in summer and where told he’d cost a million quid? Can’t see it but it really would be a statement signing that.

I know. This is what makes me laugh.

9 are out of contract in the summer.

    Hogan

    Magehy

    Couto

    Tollitt

    Green

    Dicky

    Biscuit legs

    Hope

    Mikey

I don’t think any of them will be offered new deals- (maybe Fondop)  so that frees up a lot of budget.

But they aren’t the issue- people also want rid of-

Ward, Shelton, Nuttall, Kurt, Reid- there is no way we are paying up 5 or 6 of the longer contacts.

Yeah I would get rid of all 9 mentioned. I actually quite like Hogan but he’s getting on and I think we can get better for what he’ll be earning.

Fondop as well is a decent option from the bench but again, think we can get better.

Of the contracted lads we don’t want - I could see teams taking a punt on Shelton and Kurt. I think Kurt will go this month tbh. Sheltons shite but has done ok elsewhere, it’s just whether another team would get close to his wage here.

Could see us binning Reid off in summer, agreeing to a mutual pay out. Someone would sign him on a free, he has a decent goal record.

Think we’re stuck with Ward and Nuttall. Normans signed until 2025 too I think? Reckon a team will take a punt on him, maybe even in Jan.

One way or another I think a good 8-12 of the current squad won’t be an Oldham player come August 2024.

  9. They should be in the Chaddy at the back, as far away as possible.

Hartlepool brought a decent number and apparently made some noise. I was in the RRE and couldn’t hear a peep except a murmur when Mancini came on. Keeping them towards the back creates a good distance between them and their players. Get them out the way.

Also lets roll with either the purple or tangarine kit at home for a bit, why not?

5PM saying he’s close to a few more signings, and intimidated that people will see the quality they’re trying to bring in. (Which following on from Conlon implies they won’t come cheap)

Blows my ‘no budget left until summer’  theory right out of the window. The backing of Frank and his family continues to surprise and delight me.

Yeah this is what I took from it, implying they will be real quality signings and said there would be a few of them.

Stockton and Norwood (while I’m not sure how well it would/will work) is a frightening partnership for the NL if that was to come off. Half of L1 would take that as their forward line.

I’m sure a couple of players will end up leaving to free up at least some of the wage budget.

    Exciting times though.

Think you might be remembering me, although its Wyscout not Statsbomb. I assume they're very similar though.

    Hudson.

The Wyscout index which compiles a bunch of stats depending on position to determine the best in the division has him as the 7th best. 1st Johnson @ Halifax, 2nd Smith @ Bromley and annoyingly 3rd is Moulden @ Dogdale (although Tyrer at Chesterfield is 12th).

FYI, comparing Normans full season to Hudsons half, both our keepers are very close in stats although Hudson shades it.

    Kitching

Index has him as the 7th best fullback in the league and 3rd best predominantly left sided fullback. Briggs @ Saafend and Kanu @ Barnet being the left sided players ranked higher. Indevidual stats suggest he is probably the best LB going forwards and above average defensively.

    Sheron

Theres a caveat with the centre of midfield in that theres 3 catagories, defensive, central and attacking so messes with the sample sizes somewhat but the Index ranks him as the 9th best central midfielder in the league. 1st Whitely @ Bromley, 2nd Booty, 3rd Krauhaus @ Bromley.

If you want anything more specific then im happy to look it up for you.

    Thanks for that mate.

it’s interesting to read and appreciate you looking. How do Hobson and Hogan rank up? Raglan hasn’t featured much until recently.

Is there anything that by team ranks players at the one club i.e Oldhams best player based on all stats available is Norwood for example? Like an overall ranking of sorts?

  12. Bit random but I remember a poster on here had access to Statsbomb through work which the club also use as a scouting tool for potential signings.

If the poster sees this would you mind checking on where Hudson and Kitching rank in their positions across the league? Particularly Kitching. I can’t think of another left back so far who has looked better.

Be interesting to see where a player like Sheron ranks among midfielders this season based on his stats, I seem to remember last season he was high.
