Not saying we can't re-sign in spite of that but given that the Home shirt will be the same as last season, would have thought Abbott would have been given number 10 or another number if keeping Hughes was on the agenda. Somehow dont think he is. And offering him a pay as you play deal when all of the other pros at the club as good as he is are earning pretty decent money? If the club makes the decision to re-sign him then he should be subject to the same treatment as all the other pros at oafc. Give him the service and he will get goals, I dont think that is in doubt, and I highly doubt any decision not to offer him a contract will not be based on footballing reasons. And at the question of latics night not long ago he openly stated that he is happy in oldham, and his kids love coming up here too. Hughes had a "window of opportunity" to sign an improved contract in January or accept a deal with another club (Doncaster) subject to them agreeing a fee with us as he still had time left (6 months) on his contract. The fact remains that if Doncaster had come up with enough to tempt tta, be that £100-200k, then the chances are that Hughes would have been off to the championship on probalbly 4-5K per week (208-260k per year) on a two and a half year contract netting him and extra £128-£180K a year. The chances also are he wouldn't compromise on what he wanted in wages and Doncaster weren't prepared to pay both a fee and his contract demands even though at the time Doncaster were desparate. They were struggling in the league, then all of a sudden it came together for them as they went on a run, got themselves safe and have obviously decided that they no longer need to take the gamble that is Lee Hughes. Hughes obviously felt that he could get himself a good deal at the end of the season when his contract ran out, probably in the Championship. But after his late season spell at Blackpool, where he was watched by a number of clubs, those clubs have decided that he just isn't worth a gamble and that includes Blackpool who have in fact signed his "ineffective" partner from last October, Ormerod. In the meantime, tta, who didn't earn their money by being fools, realised that Doncaster wern't going to pay us a fee, that Hughes was going to see out his contract and withdrew the contract offer on the basis that either he would get a good offer at the end of the season, which would blow us out of the water, or that if he didn't get an offer that would put us in the driving seat if we wanted to retain him. (Tell me if that doesn't make sense) So what was the point in then letting Hughes sign a new contract at the higher figure and reduce the budget for other signings this season? Since then we have a new manager, who initially reeased Gregan & Hughes on financial grounds (we wouldn't match what they were looking for) and has then re-signed Gregan as his demands reduced and may now re-sign Hughes if his demands are reduced (i.e to a similar level as his last contract) Now all of a sudden we are in the driving seat, as most clubs now are as they tighten belts due to the finacial climate, and Hughes hasn't got any other offers on the table. The other issue is how many clubs have been put off by LH's past conviction, the fact he remains on parole, the horid reaction he has received from opposition fans, together with rumour and inuendo from the fall out of doggygate etc, be it true or false. Doncaster were the only club to seriously come in for him at the time (Jan transfer window) and you have to remember that they were desparate at that time. They needed goals to go with their neat appraoch play and they weren't coming from Price, Hayter & co. Times changed and now we look well placed and it will really be down to 1 person as to whether LH is worth a contract. That man is DP. Personally I haven't voted in the poll as I am unsure. I don't know LH's current mood and on that basis I am prepared to back the managers judgement rather than be swayed by various uninformed 's on a messageboard.
