Broadband Accelerators

My Internet download speed is about 0.5 mbs....i.e effing gash. I need to upgrade but can't be bothered changing over to Virgin and think I should wait for BT to roll out the 20mb line to my area before I see what I can upgrade to with SKY or BT.

In the meantime, I'm thinking about buying one of those BT Broadband Accelerators - some good reviews online and only cost a few quid. However, I'm not sure if one would work for me because i, SKY provide my internet (albeit down a BT phone line) ii, my router isn't plugged into the main BT socket in the hall - which is where BT seem to say the accelerator goes....

Can anyone advise me if I can still use a BT Broadband Accelerator if my ISP is SKY ?: And will it only work if my router is plugged into the main BT socket ?

What does here say your connection is - http://www.speedtest.net/

Once you've done that have a look at a few of the other providers websites, there is usually a "what speed will I get" link where they search their database for the nearest exchange...etc..

If the speedtest result is massively lower than the ISPs think they can get you then it might be worth getting on to BT. I've had a whole world of pain with my connection and after about 18 months BT finally realised they had messed up the connection at the exchange so I now I get around 2-3mb on my internet and BT vision on demand works a treat.

The also sent me a free accelerator the other week, I fitted it but it hasn't done much.

Do you have access to the master socket? If so you may want to consider plugging a powerline adapter in there then (these need power so you will be running the phone cable from the wall socket to the adapter plugged into a power socket) from a 2nd adapter run the network cable to the hub (then onto the vision box..etc..) BT supplied me with 2 when I got the home hub so you may have some.
