Sheffield United won their last 3 games, like us, beating Forest 1/5/93, Everton 4/5/93 and Chelsea 8/5/93, see http://www.soccerbase.com/teams/team.sd?team_id=2328&comp_id=2#teamTabs=results Since the Blades ended up finishing 3 points above us, they were only ever 6 points above us thanks to the different days the fixtures were on. Going into the final game we could have caught the Blades, Ipswich and Palace but the first two would have required a massive goal swing. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FA_Premier_League_1992-93 and http://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=1993-05-

Somethingelse that should be addeed here is that either side of those 2 games we plaed Walsall at home before Leeds and lost 2-0 Michael Ricketts did us and we wawful! and the game after Everton didn't we throw away a point to draw 1-1 against a side at the foot of the table with 10 men may have been Bristol Rovers not sure. 2 of our worst performances sandwich our 2 best of that season. Technically whilst they were in the equation when we beat Villa on the Sunday (2nd May) they were out of reach on that Tuesday night. Most people realised when they won at Forest on the Saturday (1st May) they were, due to their superior goal difference, virtually safe. So Palace were always the team we were chasing. On the 1st May (Saturday) they beat Ipswich 3-1 to go to 48 points. We had 40, before we played Villa on the Sunday hence the 8 points deficit. (At that point we were 7 points short of overhauling Sheffield Utd due to goal difference.) We clawed 3 points back by beating Villa and Palace picked a point up at City on the Tuesday to go 6 points clear but with a slightly better goal difference than us but meaning victories by any margin for us agaianst both Liverpool and Southampton coupled by any Palace defeat at Highbury would see us safe. I know where you are coming from but everyone in the club knew that Palace were the team realistically in our sights during those last 6 days and that we had to literally focus on 1 game at a time and make sure we picked up 3 points. Cheers, Harry P.S. don't try and destroy legend. We have precious little to cheers us up in recent times

Cheers, Harry P.S. don't try and destroy legend. We have precious little to cheers us up in recent times Technically it was 4 days from the Tuesday night when Palace were the ones in our bullseye (with Ipswich in the distance and the Blades virtually out of sight). Going into the last saturday it stood P Points GD GS Blades 45 49 -1 51 Ipswich 45 49 -6 48 Palace 45 49 -10 48 -------------------------------------- Us 45 46 -12 59 So a 3-0 win for us and a 3-0 loss for Ipswich (or the equivalent) would have meant we would have finished above them, when they were 2-0 up after 52 minutes that dream ended. But maybe it was the naivety of youth that made me think we still had a chance of cathcing both the Blades and Ipswich when we played Villa away. I can remember two things about that game against Saints, the goal from a corner by Pointon and spending the last 10 minutes not being able to watch. Even if the Blades had lost their last two games we still would have needed to get 7 points from the last (or 6 and give someone a hiding) that would have equalled our best record of the year- the previous record including when we beat Wimbledon 6-2 when it was alledged by the courts that we were only playing 9 men. That still would have been a massive achievement, the fact we went 1 better was even sweeter.

The Walsall game was before the Leeds and Everton games (28/29th December after drawing 0-0 with Forest of Boxing Day), thus why us winning both was such a shock. We were awful that day. The 1-1 draw was at home to Brighton, the week after the Cup win at Goodison, Hughes scored a goal out of nothing before Brighton scrambled a last second equaliser - our susceptibility to set-pieces rearing its' head again. Ironic that Trotters was part of that team too. I still maintain if he'd played at Goodison we would have been battered instead two defenders with a (usually) cool heads in Stam and Hazell helped us immensely. As promising as Trotman was back then we tightened up at the back after he'd gone with Rubes and Stammy forging a very effective pair and from him coming into the team in mid-October, to him leaving at the end of January, we failed to win ONE home game...
