It works by applying various optimisation tweaks based on the speed of your computer and net connection. It can also optimise the browsers memory settings. Or try FasterFox at fasterfox.mozdev.org which is a similar extension that optimises Firefox by tweaking certain network and rendering settings. It can also "pre-fetch" all the links on the page you're currently browsing! So they are loaded and cached before you even click on them...
