  1. He's a football manager, not a politician or salesman.

Unfortunately there is an element of both in the Manager's job description in 2010 and ok if we are playing in the Conference in front of 1,200 fans he will fit in fine, but not a league team. How many people earning in the range £80K -£100k can be devoid of the above skills and get away with it.

  2. Really don't want to change Manager and up to the last few weeks have always thought we should give DP more time. However a couple of things have changed my mind.

First of all tactics; he won't change, next season will be equally dire, yesterday 1st half good, 2nd half tried to hang on to a 2-1 win rather than pushing on.

He has no empathy with the club or fans, got on the bus at Carlisle no post match conference for GMR,how the hell does he think the casual fan is going to hear about latics especially when it is good news. Comment that he doesn't hear the moans in the local press because he lives in Yorkshire, he is employed by OAFC and it his responsibility to engage with the local press. Why hasn't he like other managers appeared on the late football show on TV, sent Greegs instead. Martin Gray was featured on the show last week not DP.

All in all, lack of leadership, empathy, positive promotion of the club and negative tactics.

  3. Why aren't we scoring goals?

    (1) The midfield are too static, sideways passing kills the momentum - no pass and move = a midfielder rarely pops up into the box, so no goals there then. The static midfield has led to a yawning chasm between midfield and the strikers, thus we are left with strikers that forage on scraps and play far too deep searching for the ball.

    (2) A lack of width, the 'wingers' are tucking in and caught too far inside, they're reluctant to get top the byline ( aproblem we've had since Eyres retired) thus no ones pulled out of position, they turn inside or backwards and usually lose the ball by being crowded out due a lack of movement from the deep lying strikers or the midfielders being reluctant to move into the opposition's half.

    (3) Full backs not overlapping. The loss of Eardley was lauded by some, to those of us that no the game - it has nullified so much of our attacking threat from wide. He could be infuriating but the lad could cross a ball and was willing to attack. Our biggest mistake was not bringing Sheehan back and Penney increasingly restricting Jacobson (anyone who saw him in pre-season, for Brizzle and his vid on You TUbe knows the lad is being held back.)

We are now left with a situation were Rubes is becoming more and more of an attacking influence from deep, that's desperate if you ask me. Penney needs to sort his tactics out yes but the majority of our offensive players need to grow some bollocks and remember how to actually play an offensive game.

    1. Jacobson - get the lad back into the team, let him push on, overlap and get crosses on. perhaps even have an occasional shot. when was the last time one of our full-backs had a shot on goal?

    2. Greegs - wins every header all over the pitch except in their box, why? He should be steaming in for corners and free-kicks, get on with it!

    3. Rubes - 3 goals from him, he's doing his job imo

    4. Lee - push on!!!

    5. Worthy - Hold the ball, spread it wide

    6. Furman - pass and move, get into the box! SHOOT!

    7. Taylor - Get some chalk on yer boots, get to the by line, stop cutting inside and gamble again on that back post!

    8. Smalley - Take your man on, don't just push the ball in front and chase after it, keep it close and shoot more!

    9. Pav - Stop all the fancy :censored:, get back to doing what you did before your injury, win it lay it off get on your bike. Oh and SHOOT!

There is a nucleus of a decent team, its not a lack of talent imo, but a lack of footballing brains and desire to get stuck in. Too many refuse to take ownership and make something happen. we're a team of reactive players that once the going gets tough become shrinking violets. Thus the amount of nilled defeats.

Some of the faults lie with Penney, but most of those problems are down to the players, they need to grow some and learn a thing a two from young Brookey who has scored the only goal this season where we have flown into the muck and bullets.

30 goals scored and only one I can think of where there's been a risk of injury, our problem is we're a team of softarses!

    Pretty much spot on

    2 things

a Midfielders need to run past Pav (towards the opposition goal) Dale stephens did it recently (can't remember which game, they all blur into one) and scored.

b Fullacks need to get forward past the wingers either to cross or provide a decoy ,see Gary Neville today at his age decoy run, cross and Park scores being brave, Chris Taylor watch in particular (how much do you waqnt it!)

  4. big joe didnt get lucky, he signed players from higher divisions who werent fullfilling their potential, and yes he took some gambles

dave penny has signed cast offs from league 1 and 2 and a keeper from non league

he payed good money for colbeck, brill is allegedley the highest paid player at the club, parker, need i say any more

revolving door of crap on loan strikers

    endless full back signings

    swindon

    colchester

    bristol rovers

    yeovil are 12

    wallsall are 13

they are all streets ahead of us this season, we have gone backwards tenfold

tta will not go it is inevitable that the manager will go sooner rather than later

Swindon and Colchester have both got significantly bigger budgets behind them and bigger attendances, why could we not keep our best palyer of the season after Gregan, Sheehan out of the clutches of Swindon.bristol Rovers have better gates and their fans are not so fickle.

  5. bang wrong my friend

managers live or die by their signings

name me more than 1 that hasbeen successful

tta have already admitted mistakes in the past ie talbot

    penny will be another one

however i do believe they will get it right

penny is one of the major factors that is wrong with this club along with some of the :censored:e that he has signed

he needs to go in the summer regardless

Joe Royle had a long list of bad signings before he got lucky, give a Manager at least 18 months to sort it out. TTA have shown no more ability to "get it right" than Dave Penney, so I have no more confidence in the next manager through the revolving doors.

The whole economics of football is stacked against us. Its not good , the whole structure of clubs with our resources is bust, its not just Dave Penney's or TTA's fault there sre bigger issues and we need to see beyond the end of our noses.

Name me one team in the top 10 of this division with a budget or crowds lower than ours.

  6. What a good thread

ok we are stuggling, changing managers won't solve the prolem and Rome wasn't built in a day, or the pinch me seasons. We need to stick with Dave for a good part of next season. Interesting that the less eloquent responses on this thread are anti Penney, at least they have a new song to sing with not many words in it.

  7. The Penney out song today was a disgrace. How many would stand alone in a room with Dave Penney and sing that to his face ?

Ok things aren't going well, the club needs stability on the pitch to compensate for the instability and dire facilities off it. We would only be asking the TTA to choose a new manager and they have failed to get the man we need on 3 previous occasions.

I am not saying Dave Penney should be bomb proof, but give him a chance,we won't go down and with some stability and togetherness we can go more confidently into next season.

And no I am not a happy clapper, but there is an unrealistic bandwaggon of festering gloom that too many are thriving on.

  8. For a lot of people that live in the borough of Oldham the actual community doesn't exist anymore. Ok they go to the hospital,to school because they have to,given a choice of where to be entertained, relax, shop, watch sport and work it is just accepted that you have to go elsewhere. Sucessive councils have pandered to the whim of every grouping resulting in inertia and a slum. Latics and Roughyeds are just a by product of that malaise. There is a continual drift away, more and more residents with aspirations and desire for community spirit eventually move towards their jobs, shopping and entertainment leaving an ever increasing void. The council can't cope with one of the last bastions of such by gone spirit residing at the heart of the borough and so are shoving us in a corner near the Mancs.

One final point they have manged to achieve this and leave those remaining with the highest council tax in Greater Manchester.

What a joke,TTA must really enjoy a challenge.

  9. No, it was just the fact that everybody in the ground could see that it was Smalley who should have been taken off.

Wrong, I also thought that he should have taken Furman off so there were presumably at least 3 of us in the ground me Penney and Gray.

There seems to be an assumption that you always take off the worst performing player, today he was obviously trying to change tactics and give us a more attacking set up and it worked, well done Dave today. There are signs that we are starting to attack a bit more so lets hope it continues and we have a etter product to watch.

  10. Dave says:

"We have got 4 loans in now and we have to assess what area we want to strengthen" "We have one loan slot left so we will probably get Saturdays game out of the way and see where we are ready for the next three big games we have coming up"

    Fan would like to say:

"We have an established team who I know have been here long enough to feel empathy with me win, draw or lose. I have a good idea of what direction the team is going in, ok we may have weaknesses, but I am confident the coaches are working on them. I am going to watch them at Colchester tomorrow week, if we don't play well tomorrow lets give Tom,Dick or Harry a chance from the youth team/reserves.We have a board that don't force Dave into this type of short termism behaviour"

What a way to run a business, how would you like it if a new boy appears next to you every Monday morning for a few weeks. Its a joke in our house, how may Latics loanees appear on the TV, the other night remember Colin the goalkeeper now playing for Carlisle , I had nearly forgot. Its been going on for years and it is tearing the heart out of the club.

  11. I'd like to know if they'd like ME to stay.

I'm 50 years old and have supported Latics since i was six. I've lost count of the season tickets i've blindly renewed, year after year often simply because i just couldn't imagine not returning whatever the circumstances. It's very unlikely i wouldn't renew again next year but i have to confess that despite being in possession of my ticket, i often need to really drag myself to BP these days.

Fact is.....i'm one of the lucky ones with a disposable income that isn't affected by whether i renew my ticket or not....and even i'm becoming fed up with Latics. What chance those not so fortunate? Well, let me tell you Barry, if i had to make those choices right now, i'd be dropping the sporting love of my life for the telly because there is NOTHING to warrant spending £20+ for what is on offer either on or off the pitch. Huge mistakes have been made. The heart has been ripped out of the matchday experience by taking away first the Clayton arms and second the Lookers. IMHO, those two decisions affect each home attendance by at least 500 spectators, let alone the associated revenue from the bars. I could understand it if Failsworth was a done and dusted deal.....but come on.....huge mistakes.

So....what is in it for me Barry.......what do TTA promise to deliver to keep me interested......then remember i'm one of the lucky ones who you or TTA don't actually have to try all that hard to keep on board......what will the board be doing for the dwindling remainder?

I couldn't have put it better myself, exactly the same for myself and my wife.

The closure of the Lookers was a shocking decision even without the benefit of hindsight. There are countless loyal season ticket holders who used to sit in the Lookers who no longer attend. We went to the RRE and are now in the main stand paddock, neither of which has the same, allbeit limited, appeal. What about the kids? Never mind the diehard adults, the future of the club is also being sold down the river, what affinity can boundary blues have, without even a home in the ground?

  12. Regarding the playing side, I would ask myself "can the current management team keep the club in this division"

If the answer is no (which for me, i am now 95 percent certain it is) I would ask myself

    1) "what will cost more, relegation or paying off the management team"

    No brainer really, relegation

    2) Is there someone else who

    - Would want the job

    - Who we could realistically afford

    - Who I believe can do a better job than the current regime (or at least keep us in this division)

If the answer to all three is yes, then the management team would have their P45's tomorrow

The problem is how many mangement teams can you have before you become the problem. Having said that I have utmost admiration/sympathy for TTA. just a bad decision to invest in OAFC

  13. If its true or not but a very reliable source (how many times have we heard that ) has heard dave penny get asked about the new stadium on the lines of... When will the new stadium be done.. dave's responce.. I Dont know i wont be here in may anyway.

dont know how much truth is in it but still pretty interesting

If things keep going the way they are none of us will be there never mind Dave Penney

  14. I've kept my trap shut til now but I am right on the brink with this lot now.

that was the most depressing spectacle I can ever remember. & I've barely missed a home game since '85.

why should I tip up at this 3 sided dump to watch a team of players I don't know, in the bottom 4 of the league, settle from the kick off for 0-0 at home, with just a handful of other desparing, miserable fans? seriously, I'm struggling to see the point right now.

    Spot on mate

  15. What difference is actually seeing the plans supposed to make? Even if there are non-football facilities with money-making potential, a 12000 capacity (or is it 10000?), nonetheless suggests that the intention is to be 'self-sustaining' at this level or below (where nearly all of the rest of the clubs with stadiums so small reside.) Hence, any monies raised will go into keeping the club afloat as opposed to seriously advancing up the divisions.

Nor should we forget that, operating on the fringe of the city, any facilities will have serious local competition.

Exactly,in particular the Sport City development as it stands now is just the beginning.Any commercial activity that we have on the Failsworth site will be blown out of the water when that development is finished.
