  1. OCT 12th Orient V's OAFC Result 3:1 Goals : Whittle (pen) ATT : 6511

    APR 19th OAFC V's Orient Result 0:0 Goals : None ATT : 10571

Wasnt it always NIL-NIL when we played Orient at home?

Always remember them being the most boring game of the season, big side every time they came, put 10 men on the line.

Sounds strange now I know, they also stood out for having more than 2 Black players in the side which was very rare at the time.

  2. Yesterday was my first game at Boundary Park this season and I was staggered by the

moribund atmosphere surrounding the whole place.

The crowd were morose from before the kick-off and as the first half progressed which was

admittedly poor the general atmosphere degenerated into an air of unbelievable negativity and

by half time it felt like the grim reaper was ready to salvage some suicidal souls!

I worry a little as it seems to be a bit of a vicious circle. The standard of football doesn't lift the

crowd and the crowd doesn't lift the spirits of the players when the standard of the football is poor.

WE ARE BY FAR THE LONGEST SERVING SIDE IN THIS DIVISION NOW,PERHAPS THAT EXPLAINS THE GENERAL MALLAISE ABOUT THE PLACE?

  3. Bolton and to a lesser extent Blackburn and Burnley used to be the main rivals in the mid to late seventies, mainly brought about by the nasty kickings the Twenty year old plus fans of these Clubs used to give to a lot of young Latics fans in their early teens. Not that it was big or clever,a lot of these Lads in their early teens held a grudge against fans of these clubs and gave them back a taste of their own medicine five years or so later.

Luckily, those days have gone and Young fans can now go to the game without worrying about a fully grown neanderthal attacking them on their way home from the match.

  4. To be fair to Sally Anne Mathews can recall her attending regularly a while ago, and being vocal, not sure if she was going out with a player at the time?

Mike Cecere after she finished with Norman (Who?) Kelly.

Sarah Lancashires Dad was a Latics fan, when he left the Oldham Chronicle he later wrote the TV Series "The Cuckoo Waltz" which was about a Latics Reporter.

One episode was actually filmed in the main stand (at a reserve game I think) and the main character made several references to our flying winger Alan Groves.

  5. Following on from the famous fans thread, I can't help thinking about the Bruce Foxton lookalike who used to stand behind goal in the Chaddy and bellow ' Come on you Laticssssssssssssssssaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa' - I haven't seen him at BP for years but he knocks around the Spotland Road area of Rochdale....does anyone remember him?

The Bruce Foxton look-a-like was a guy called Jimmy Rafferty from Boarshaw, stopped going when we became succesfull if I remeber rightly.

I was once refered to as a Beefy Graham Taylor look -a- like in Mouldy old dough, perhaps so in my early eighties side parting days!

  6. Harry Redknapps Autobiography gives Alan Groves a good mention including-

No, no, I’ve been to Chesterfield a few times. I remember we played them away when I was at Bournemouth when John Bond was the manager, and we had an outside left called Alan Groves. He was the strongest, quickest, most skilful player I’ve ever seen. He was something else, this fella, and it was frightening how much talent he had. But he was a bit of a character and I remember we went to Chesterfield one day and we got off the coach and this bird came up to him and said: ‘Here y’are, you bloody ’ave him,’ and handed him this baby. He was married, but it was a bird he was seeing apparently, and she left him holding the baby and just buggered off. So he’s stood there, holding the baby outside, while Bond’s giving the team talk. Groves had to give it to some fans to look after while he played, and he took it back on the team coach after the game and his brother and sister looked after him in Portland Bill. I’ll never forget it. What a player he was.”

Alan Groves. On my life, Nick, he was incredible. He could have played for England. You’ve never seen nothing like him. You used to kiss him and you’d bounce off him, he was that big, but he was quicker and more skilful than anyone I’ve ever seen. He died at 27, I think, of a heart attack. A tragedy. I always think of him when I think of Chesterfield.”

  7. Touch of Irony tomorrow,Grant Thornton who sponsored Warnies Kit last year are match Sponsors.

Met him on several occasions,he is indeed a lovely, genuine Lad and definately didnt want to leave the Club.

I think he is one of thise Players who we should always welcome as "One of our Own",yes I know he was born in Norwich, but he always played or us with the same Passion that the fans have for the Club.
