I am doing my first ever Marathon in October (Birmingham International Marathon), and just wondering if anyone else on here had done one before and, if so, did they have any tips in terms of training and recovery, diet etc?

I am doing it, along with the Oldham 10k, Manchester half marathon and Yorkshire Tough Mudder, to raise money for Alzheimers Society so, if anyone wants to donate, I'd be eternally grateful...

No idea about running, but do a lot of cycling. Went and did some cycling in the alps a few years ago, which was quite tough, and needed to recover pretty quick each day ready for the next. SIS recovery drink is bloody brilliant for that.

Good luck. I can't imagine just how hard running for that long is.

he had a good 25 minutes yesterday which trumps this 9 year cv?

He's looked decent in a few games for us. Maybe we could be the club where he settles and does well.

Can't see him being too expensive. And we need to build a squad so I think he's worth a punt.

I'll trust you on that. I don't recall us playing two up front second half at Chesterfield and I wasn't at Southend. I'll be damned if I can remember tactics from last season let alone a few seasons ago...

We pushed Taylor up front to partner Holloway at Chesterfield in the second half.

  4. I've just booked at the Novotel for 8 nights from 2nd Jan for me and my partner, I notice a few have stayed here, is it a good choice? I've paid around £1100 for 8 nights, it's free cancellation so will keep an eye on price fluctuations, it is for a superior king room on a high floor with Times Square view, no breakfast, which seemed reasonable for what looks to be a good hotel. I know it will be cold but hopefully not too bad. Flying from Heathrow with British Airways which has cost about £1200 for 2 return tickets, could probably have got slightly cheaper but really wanted to fly with BA or Virgin and BA came in slightly cheaper, all in all at around £2300 for 8 nights in New York i'm relatively happy.

Yeah it's a good choice, nice hotel right in the theatre district. Room when I stayed there was really nice, couldn't really fault it.

The hotel bar has a balcony which overlooks Times Sq, which was pretty good when I stayed there because it was 35 degrees outside, but might not be as ideal for you (unless they have heaters out there).

Gallaghers steak house is next door - I'd highly recommend that if you like eating meat. Theres a decent pub a block across too (Rosie O'Grady's).

  5. Not a clue as I only bet on the horses 5 or 6 days a week and still living like a pauper.

FWIW I have already stuck a lucky 15 on for tomorrow.

    Ballyandy 1.30

    Henri Parry Morgan 2.50

    My Tent Or Yours 3.30

    Vroum Vroum Mag 4.10

Vroum Vroum Mag was entered in the Champion Hurdle, taking the easier option now but still up against a hot favourite.

I went to Cheltenham yesterday. Backed Ballyandy, Henri Parry Morgan and Vroum Vroum Mag. Didn't win a bean all day.

    Decent day out though.
