You are talking about punishing things that someone finds offensive. This is 100% a free speech issue. You just can't see the fact that you found his comments offensive. Noone was hurt and noone had their livelihoods damaged as a direct result of what he said. He simply caused offense.
There is NO difference between freedom of speech and the kind of "racial abuse" highlighted in the Liam Stacey case. He said things that people found offensive. That is all. He is a dick. He was wrong to say those things. But if you value free speech at all, he had every right to say what he said.
IMO, he absolutely no right to say what he did. Please see above post ^

For anyone unsure please read the last 3 lines on the explanation of freedom of speech!
The right to freedom of expression is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Article 19 of the ICCPR states that "[e]veryone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference" and "everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice". Article 19 goes on to say that the exercise of these rights carries "special duties and responsibilities" and may "therefore be subject to certain restrictions" when necessary "[f]or respect of the rights or reputation of others" or "[f]or the protection of national security or of public order (order public), or of public health or morals".[1][2]
I'm quite sure that calling a dying man a black %&$£%£$%^ is a public order offence. Eitherway anyone with an ounce of respect for others just wouldn't say it!

I don't like what you said! You must be punished!
I really don't know why people can't understand exactly how dangerous this line of thinking is.
Are you seriously telling me to call someone a black %%%%%%%% is freedom of speech and should be accepted in society? Give over. I repeat if you racially abuse someone and you are unlucky enough that the authorities get wind of it, then it is in the hands of the law. I cannot believe that you are unable to distinguish between freedom of speech and being racially abusive.

I think that people using Twitter at best is worthy of death, and that a prison sentence is lenient.
However, I go along with the idea that you are either in or out on the freedom of speech idea. Oh, it's racist/sexist/ageist/OldhamSheridanist argument is just bollocks. If you don't like it, don't allow freedom of speech. Call it censorship. Which is what it is.
To racially abuse someone is not exercising your right to freedom of speech. It is just plain wrong and should be punished! Surely, I hope for your own good, you can see the difference!
-
IMO, Having an offensive opinion isn't deserving of a bodybag or a criminal record, although to some special interest groups, or the offended, they probably are.
Maybe not but voicing it about someone who is on their deathbed in a very public domain is very wrong. Not sure it deserved jail time but certainly needed to be punished!!
-
[Here is my view on the subject without reading the last 5 pages.
The use of twitter (or any other social networking site) is not an excuse for making such inappropiate comments if it reaches the public domain. For example, you call your boss a :censored: to a work colleague fine. However, if it reaches the public domain and your boss disiplines you then it just plain tough luck.
Racially abusing a dying man in the public domain is ,as a comparison for example, going to a funeral and saying in front of the deceased family that man was this that or the other. You just wouldn't do it. A little tact is what is required but certainly no excuse for racial abuse.
There is no excuses and any attempt to defend this man's comments under the umbrella of freedom of speech is unthinkable in my eyes. However, I do feel the sentence is very harsh and the chap is being made a scapegoat!

Not one to jump on the bandwagon - but that is a joke!!!

True, I certainly started to support Latics at the right time at the beginning of 86/87, even then though my fledgling support endured heartbreak at the hands of the newly fangled Play Offs and Keith (The Bastard) Edwards….
I'm 34 Prozac and you are right a great age to support latics in their peak through my secondary school years. This win was made all the better because no one gave us a cat in hells chance of winning (United were top, latics 4 points adrift at the bottom). For days before, I was having to endure the taunts of united fans. I tell you though when I walked into school the next day with a biggest grin in the world on my face; not a peak from the same united fans. I also think this was the game that pretty much kick-started our successful survival bid!
Have to say these years made my childhood/early teenage years all the better

Next season? If we lose the next game we we'll go out of business. Thats the reality of it.
??? explain your comment. More likely the slow painful death will continue! ;)

sorry just seen other thread. feel free to delete this thread.

That's what I thought too. Which is why I think people may go to more extreme measures of suicide (like throwing yourself off a multi-storey).
Anyway please don't let my curiousity get in the way of a serious subject.
I think the fact that you are surrounded by 20+ 'lads' of similar mentality and age every day. Training often sounds like a laugh. I imagine losing that hits you hard. Same with the endorphines and adrenalin constantly keeping you high when you are playing and training.
I think the guy nees to go back to what he knows best - playing footie and keeping in shape! Join a 5-aside team for the social side and running is great for giving your mind a break from the downward spiral of negative thoughts! Not saying it is the answer; but it certainly helped me!

They have already said the fan will get a life time ban if found guilty...
Not really enough if found guilty though is it! He'll just see that as a badge of honour.!
-
I don't think he was necessarily soft ... more extraordinarily angered by the situation.
Big difference.
Are you suggesting he saw an opportunity for the race bandwagon to gain momentum and took it!? Not excusing if anything was said by the way!

A Liverpool fan has said, on this very thread, that they were booing Adeyemi because of a tackle on Flanagan.
Aye and that may have been major contributing factor towards the booing. However, as posted by diego, the booing started before that tackle.

With Gerrard being eased to fitness, (3 games as a sub) then i think Kenny will either start him and take off at half-time/60 mins or so, or bring him on at HT or with 30 mins or so left. Liverpool are known for 'zonal marking' at corners and crosses, so hopefully with Simpson's delivery then we can cause them alot of problems from any corners/free-kicks we get, especially if Smith is on at any point in the game.
My honest opinion is IF we somehow manage to get the opening goal, then we have a chance of getting a result!
-
If Latics, with half the reserve team, can beat Everton, and non-league Wrexham can defeat Arsenal then there is a chance we can cause an upset (e.g. a draw) of soughts! At the end of the day, it is eleven men against eleven! If you look for a similar comparison in recent times, then surely Chasetown snatching a draw against us should be encouragement enough!

I'm no expert (although my missus is) but I'm sure depression reduces your ability to manage anxiety and so will leave you more vulnerable to panic attacks. What you're describing doesn't sound like a panic attack to me but I'll ask the doctor tonight.
Cheers dude!

Question for all those who suffer from depression! Have you ever suffered from Deja vu type symptoms!? At first I though it was just a case of Deja Vu. Then I realised this was usually the trigger for feeling hot sweats then just needing to be alone and I basically just basically not really wanting/or be able to move for a few hours! This usually happens when something unpredicatble is happening or in a very stressful situation! I realise this may just be a panic attack, but this and the feeling really down usually happens in tandem!
Sorry for sharing abit to much information but I don't know any of you guys and would be interested in knowing has anyone else felt these really quite frightening type of deja vue experiences!?
cheers

I suffer from depression and it can be a really debilitating condition. My advice to anybody is to tell people that you are suffering.
Its really tough to do so...you create a mask in order to hide it. I don't know why, perhaps its the stigma, perhaps its the misconceptions about others thinking you are 'mental' and could turn at any second. The fact is that its a very personal illness until you take the step to admit it. From personal experience, actually admitting it is the hardest, yet the best thing that you can do...as the admission makes you feel so much better than than the depression makes you feel bad.
There are also some things that you can do without medication. Exercise releases endorphins and seratonin, and any exercise helps. I try to run a couple of miles per day and even though I am a long way off the London 2012 Olympics I feel better when I exercise regularly. Sunlight is also a good thing, as I always feel better when there is a bright sunny day, winter or summer (not a good thing if you live in Oldham!!)
On the down side, alcohol is a major no no. It is a depressant and actually ends up lowering your mood. Not only that, but you also have to cope with the problems of a hangover!! Also, if you are feeling down, then try and get out of the house. Its easy to say that daytime TV is depressing, but if you get out and interact with people then it does help to raise your mood. You may find places and interests that you never knew you had - Museums, Art Galleries, Rambling in the moors, window shopping?
Finally, don't expect to "snap out of it" and don't allow people to tell you that you will "snap out". Many people did with me and I believed them, and when I didn't I was even more down.
If you admit it, and make positive steps then you have made some progress. Some progress leads to more progress etc etc.
Gary, like Robert Enke before him tragically seemed to have let their masks cover their illness.
If you think you have a friend displaying any symptoms of depression please talk to them. Dont force them to admit their illness, as they will withdraw, but let them know you are there.
And don't blame it on supporting Oldham...we could be Stockport County fans....
For those who suffer from depression, me included, what an articulate post on the trials and tribulations of a sufferer! It really is the worse thing in the world when you can't put your finger on why you can barely get yourself out of bed. Before, anyone says buck your ideas up! I've travelled the world, have some good close friends (which helps), and have re-trained at the age of 27 into a reasonably good profession! I'll give you an example of what can set off a depresion sufferer rather close to home for all of us. And before anyone says anything this is not a dig at the website! On numerous occasions when I've commented on here and received a reply that has got under my skin it has then sent me into a depression. To 90% of people they would just shrug it of, but to some it may just be the trigger that sends someone into that vicous circle of negative thoughts! That is it, a trigger, it can be stress at work, bullying, a women not answering a text for 3 days, whatever really. A depression sufferer distorts the truth and it just builds and builds until either you talk to someone or you hit rock bottom.
I'll echo for me the most important point, in my opinion,by the poster above. If you want to help someone suffering from depression! Do not tell them to snap out of it! You will only make them feel worse!
On a positive note, I would say I lead a happy life 80% of the time so I must be doing something right to combat it
cheers
