Most of those players in the 1960s/70s were signed on frees or low transfer fees, there is no reason why it can't be done today, it's just a case of finding the right type of player and giving them freedom to express themselves.
Today's Latics players look stifled by tactics.
very true they are, and the tactics are crap all we can hope for is that the top brass address the situation and go back to the days of the 60's in regards of contracts etc

Even at £20 a time? for Division three
if yodoes u're watching a team that gives its all for ninety mins then what you pay dosnt matter but when you watch todays crap it

Spot on with that. Yes I think we will stay up only due to some of the :censored: in this league but I don't want to see another season of this. The guy is clueless makes pointless substitutions, plays countless players out of position and continues to play uninspiring football bar a few performances and he seems quite happy with the way things are going.
How many loanees have we had who are suppose to have been our answer to the goal scoring problem? I make it 4 now this season and i think they have managed 3 goals between them. As most people can see the problem for most of the season has been our failure to create chances but its always a striker who is brought in. how about a winger who can beat a man and put a half decent cross in Mr Penney? Taylor no longer wants to know since he won't pass a medical for a move out of the club, Smalley has been poor but the lad is being played up front half of the time when he is clearly not one and Colbeck, well that must be the worst bit of business since we signed Wayne Gill.
When it was announced in the summer that Penney would be the new manager I was happy with the appointment if not blown away by it, as I had seen enough of his teams at Doncaster and Darlington to know that he tries to play football the right way. Well how wrong was I! After Tuesday night I came away from BP thinking that is what we are capable of, if the team is left to playing football rather than Penney insisting on 2 banks of 4 all the time. but today we was back to the same team we have seen for 90% of the season.
Wycombe earlier in the season was the game I decided Penney would never succeed at this club and had to go and since then, very few performances have suggested to me I was wrong. When we play the better teams in this league it is almost a routine loss. We have a couple of chances they score theirs and Penney comes out with the same old comments of needing to be more ruthless in front of goal. We have not won one game against the top 6 ( incase any one wonders the record stands at 8 defeats and 3 draws from the 11 games against them so far) When was the last time we had a record that bad! Infact im pretty sure we have only won twice agaist the top half of the table this season.
All in all this season has been a nightmare and I have never felt as low as a latics fan. Whatever happens now happens, but we have unfortunatly left ourselves open to a realistic chance of relegation and I fear if that happens then that could be very difficult to get things back to the way things once were, especially with the likes of Bury and Rochdale possibly coming up leaving us below our 'little' neighbours.
Roll on tuesday night.
if every full bloodied latics fan would open up and tell the truth this would be on all their lips but there is still a few of them who are still living in eutopia !!! it dosnt exist

Passion and comradeship cost nothing and that's whats disappointing nowadays.
+1 i just wish we could pick up a team like we had in the 60's and the 70's the ground would be full !
-
And could David Shaw move, it's remembering players like those which makes the present lot so poor by comparison.
that was a team that played every game like it meant everything for them, passion comradeship and willing to give everything for 90 mins. these things are missing now

Rather get rid of some of our muppets! bags....support ya team!!! Clowns!!!
if all the " bags muppets clowns "went there would be you and the other dilluded sat with pillock penney in about ten seats ! so wake up reality isnt a dream
-
George McVitie, now there was a proper winger.
you know your stuff that lad could put a ball on dave shaws head without him moving
-
From the main stand it sounded like:
Get out of our club
Get out of our club
You s**t Yorkshire b*****d
Get out of our club
just hope he could hear it

martin gray saying recently that saturdays game against exceter was a must win game,a draw isnt good enough at this time of the season and anything other than a win on saturday is a failure.
i guess we failed then )
the failure is the manager and his backroom staff .

I have no doubt that the next 4/5 games will not see us scoring 3 goals a game - as for 'no tactics whatsoever and giving other teams major possession - you're way off the mark there.
Our weakness' this season are well highlighted - a lack of attacking players - a lack of form and fitness from our 'better' players and no goals from Mr Hughes!!
The team play a very tight, hard working game (generally!!) yet lack much creativity all over the park - particularly wide and midfield in general - I am sure he is trying to address that balance, because it doesn't need a few hundred so called 'experts' like all of us on here to tell him this.
Why it hasn't/isn't working, only him, the purse string holders and the coaching staff may know - but if you think that some 'messiah' can come in for DP next week or the week after and turn this squad into a 'rampant, free flowing attacking side - you're wrong!
I still believe - no disney, no rose glasses etc - that we'll be ok.
you've said it all "a lack of attacking players ,lack much creativity in midfield and wide possitions "who's f*****g fault is that probably ours for being tics fans and wanting to see goals the only way out is for mr bad penney to take the next exit gate he comes to
-
The poster has a difference of opinion to yourself so therefore he is an idiot?
And the difference of opinion makes you angry?
The performances and position of our club, yes - but somebody elses opinion?
I think many are frustrated and if he 'cupped his ear in a sarcastic fashion - he is also feeling frustrated - yet not the thing to do i guess.
Regardless of how bad we seem at the minute though - i really don't think continually changing managers is going to be the way forward - though i'm sure the next 4/5 games may dictate differently.
if you are willing to wait for the next 4/5 games to if there is any difference in the way we play then you are totally dissolutioned because unless it has passed you by mr bad penney can only play one way and that way is crap no tactics whatsoever apart from lets give the other team the major possession of the ball then lets chase the game

DP putting his club mobile phone to use
he would'nt know how to use something usefull
-
well i beg to differ but i want at least two more seasons before in my opinion it needs changing round ...to many managers to many player turnarounds and more to the point to many impatient blinking fans.....every blinking manager we appoint seems to get the bullet by impatient fans...this club needs stability not another blinking merry go round...sorry for the bad language
PENNY IN FOR ME
this is a typical reply from the idiots who think that the pillock which is mr bad penney can actually get us out of the position he has put us in ? wake up take the rose coloured glasses off and look at reality you do not live in disneyworld
-
I think he thought that the draw we had just scraped was a good enough reason for him to cup his ear to the away fans in the seats at the end of the game. What a pleb, i wouldnt expect that from a manager who had just won but to start cupping your ear thinking you are the dogs boll8cks and have just got one up on the boo boys after that shower just goes to show the ambitions of the manager we have.
just goes to show that he really dos'nt give af**k what we as fans think and there are people out there thing giving this piece of :censored: till the end of season is going to work how f*****g pathetic are they totally devoid of gray matter
-
14th march 2009 - MK Dons 6 - 2 Oldham
but at least we scored 2 goals unlike this seasons goal pwer we have!
-
I think Lee Evans would make a cracking manager!
benny hill would be better but is'nt he dead ? sorry we've already got one thats dead from the neck up
-
Anyone who was seated would have seen this - cannot see it mentioned. The team and Mr Penney took a fair amount of stick from some fans who were booing and shouting as they went back in at full time. I was not one of them, but equally could not applaud them either, as I thought it was a very lacklustre half hearted performance from the Latics, and thought we were lucky to get the point. The apology from Mr Penney is for this : if I had been the manager of that bunch of players, I would have put my head down as I went past the fans. Mr Penney, though, chose to get level with us, then he smirked at the stand of us. My husband had to physically hold me back, as I was itching to follow him down the tunnel and give him a piece of my mind - how utterly despicable for all the travelling fans - he should hang his head in shame, as he obviously has no respect for any of us - leave now and lets have someone who can inject some passion, and someone who has some interest in what happens to the club.
And while I am at it, what a dump of a ground - no light in the toilets - Latics Lady not a happy bunny, and made my feelings clear to a steward.
By the way, well done to the 393 who went.
your comments about mr bad penney are exactly what i think about the man he dos'nt give a dam because he knows that if he gets the push he will be at least £160,000 better off for doing what a non league manager would have done for a lot less thats the only interest he has got along with his backroom staff
-
Was speaking to a friend about this the other day...he is ultra professional granted but he rarely shows any fight or passion...he is a complete contrast to Sheridan who IMO was more suited to the management role here. Sure he may not have been professional but he was a winner....Penney seems to give teams too much respect IMO and his soft wet approach may be instilled into the team...
if thats the reason then tta need to think long and hard about about his tenure at bp and come to the conclusion that the longer he stays at the helm the more the fans are going to vote with their feet and in business no paying customers =apathy and a lot of lost revenue
-
just watched the reading -villa game and watching martin o'neill made me think "i wish our mr bad penney was more like him then our fans and players would have more confidence in themselfs rather than watching him utter motionless, passionless, and looking like a waxworks model"am i wrong or is that the nature of the man in which case he dos'nt belong here
-
alledgedly serious sexual incident if true hope he rots
the ***** should never see the light of day again

We tried playing 3 strikers to take it to them. It didn't work. Was a mistake in hindsight. Managers make them...we've 5 home games and a game vs basement side Stockport. I'll take that!
with mr bad penneys tactics the teams in the next few weeks could play with nobody on the pitch and mr bad penney would still go for a draw or in his words "lets try not to lose" f*****g pathetic
-
Okay. I have no idea what you are talking about.
ok pal will leave you to your own little world its obviously better than anybody else,s
-
OK - Not read the :censored:e and counter :censored:e that has gone before but here goes;
There didn't seem an awful lot wrong out there today - we lack 2 MASSIVE ingredients - a bit of quality in the last third and a HUGE slice of luck.
We completely nullified the best team in the divisions threat of Hoolyhoop, Martin and Holt (apart from the goal obvioulsyl!) Gregan and Hazell had the game sewn up - Stephens was the best midfielder on the park - Lee and JJ had v good games at full back, Docherty and Nelson are probably the divisions' strongest center half pairing. You 'penney outers' can say many things regarding lack of goals etc and are dead right.......but in regards to his work rate, team work and tactics, he's not far off...........DP out - My arse you clowns!
why are we clowns is it because we are not as easily led up the garden path as you are ,and in regards to his"work rate team work and !tactics! he's a million miles away from being off ? you clowns
-
You don't know me very well then.
Mate.

why is it a digrace everybody that pays to watch the game has a right to an opinion, and i would stand alone with mr bad penney to not only sing it or tell him to his face that he is crap and he has had a chance and he has failed badly
