  1.

he started off with an attacking mindset in the first half of his first season, for example he told the full-backs to push on with the attacking midfielders supporting the strikers. But after we got spanked by Peterborough it all changed instead lining up in most games 4-4-1-1 instead of 4-2-3-1

That was the game we went 2-0 up and lost 5-2 wasn't it. Remember it well. I didn't dislike PD, but he definitely lost his way. After we came away from Tranmere with a win in his first game, I was really excited. His last game, Walsall away, was abysmal.

I'm excited to see how we shape up at Stevenage, but I do expect us to ship a few goals this seas

  2.

both Dickov and Moore also had that philosophy but we ended up getting found out by better sides i.e Southampton 6-0, Peterborough 5-0, Barnsley 4-0, Huddersfield 3-2

It's a team game and most successful sides have a defence, also if you spend most of the game on the attack you risk tiring key players out

If Dickov did have that ethos, you could've fooled me. We had a paltry scoring record and lost an abundance of games by the odd goal.

  3. After reading he ping pings comments in the Chron (or was it the fishal) think it was the Chron, regarding Mellor at the back, I can see what he's trying to do now.

High tempo, pushing up meaning defenders will play with a real high line, an old clogger like Byrne doesn't fit in with this philosophy, of quick passing, speaking of passing, you watch on Sat against Hudds. how many time Oxley taps it to Mellor mainly but also Tarky and see how they pass it out to the midfield, with the occasional long pass (not to be confused with aimless punt) - much more refreshing to watch.

Also, the fear is when we play a PNE with a Davies up top he'll exploit Mellor, but its simple really, high line Davies is on half way out of trouble, put Mellor on him, let him flick it on, Traky/Grounds sweeps up every time, easy!! (says here :-))

The issue arises if he has a pacy forward along with him, but if Tarky/Grounds/Brown do they're job properly and anticipate the flick on's etc it should be a simple sweep up.

Joe Royle's ethos was, we'll score one more than you. 3-2, 4-3 were not irregular score lines. LJ I feel might have something of the same opinion. His front 4 look like they might be more dangerous than we've been used to recently, but his back 4 will probably get caught out quite a bit. Could be good fun though. If he's only half as successful as Royle, I'll take it.

  4. For all the stick the club gets for a poor OS and poor communication, poor Latics player content....

I don't think you can knock their efforts with generating commercial relationships; Zen Office Chaddy end, Verlin RRE, George Hill Main Stand, Sports Identity Shorts, Blacks / Fila / JD sports kit manufacturer / front of shirt sponsor, CM solicitors rear of shirt sponsor, O2 business suite sponsor, MOM sponsor, goal of the month sponsor, media equipment sponsor..... they've even got a Chaddy the Owl sponsor FFS!.... various partnerships.... Eden, Heineken, the list goes on.... You've gotta applaud the clubs efforts.

If they forgo stuff that doesn't earn us money for stuff that does, I'm not complaining. Keep it up I say!

  5. What an unbelievable thread. I'm gonna get nothing done.... and sounds like you're not either Prozac!?!

Stoke City away, 1994 FA Cup 4th round replay. From memory, they battered us. They were near the top of the 2nd tier. We were in the bottom 3 of the prem. Toddy Orlygsson hit the bar - for them!

They sang "going down" all game. They berated Darren Beckford - ex Port Vale - all game.....

....then, in what I remember as the 88th min (that might be poetic licence) Milligan lifted the ball over their back 4 and Beckford thundered a header against the post and in.....

...a mate and I - after composing ourselves from going mental, starting singing "we are premier league, say we are premier league".... Seconds later, so were 2,000 Latics fans, as the Stoke fans skulked out of the Victoria Ground.

My first experience of starting a song. Loved it. Prozac, got this one....?

  6. Joksts - almost 6ft 5 - you'd hope he was good in the air

Oxley - 6ft 3 - should be able to command the box

Tarky - 6ft 1 - decent header of the ball

Grounds - 6ft 1 - not that good in the air

    Clarke-Harris - 6ft 0 - Should be able to head it being a striker

    Byrne - 6ft 0 - average in the air

    Montano - 5ft 11 - rubbish in the air

I wouldn't say we were ridiculously short on height but I see where you're coming from..

Only Tarky for sure...!?! JYM could be a big miss, hope not though.

  7. Another midfielder.... Baxter must be off?

.....this seems increasingly likely. If Dickov knows his release clause isn't particularly high, I wouldn't be surprised to see him have a go. Maybe LJ is preparing for that eventuality.

Still, Charlie MacDonald and Adam Rooney (hopefully) with JCH and Millar in reserve looks better on paper than Matt Smith & Robbie Simpson did last season.

Whatever happens, LJ needs some luck, I really hope he gets a few breaks early on cos you never know where momentum can take you! COME ON OLDHAM!

  8.

How would you feel if your employer demanded a transfer fee for you'd worked your notice?

If my employer had picked me from nowhere to give me the chance to do what I'd always dreamed of, I hope I'd be delighted for them to get a fee... If I hadn't decided to stay as a reward for their initial faith in the first place.

As it happens, I work in advertising and my employment is at best a mutually beneficial arrangement.

  9. I take it your on about will grigg, think I'm gunna have a punt on him being top scorer in league one next year

Yes, sorry I suppose I didn't make that clear. I knew of Brandy and Paterson but Grigg's news broke today.

People say, if another company offered you twice your current wage, you wouldn't say no would you? ....and when they put it like that, I guess it's hard to argue. However, my current employer didn't pluck me from relative obscurity to put me on a platform I only dreamed of (a la Matt Smith, Will Grigg et al) and so I feel I might want to reward that with some loyalty!?!

Easier said than done I realise, but I don't remember footballers in the 80's being so obviously greedy and self centred, maybe I'm just being romantic.

  10. I feel sorry for Walsall. They give the boy a chance and provide him with an opportunity to go onto better things in the future and he rewards them by jumping ship at the very first opportunity. I know people disagree, but I feel the same way toward Matt Smith.

If the tribunal doesn't award them fairly, losing a 20-goal striker to a team in the same division would be a real kick in the teeth. Yet another example of greedy footballers and their awful agents at play. Speaking of which, the Chron's article suggests JYM has not contacted us to say he isn't coming back, just simply hasn't reported for training. Poor behaviour in any workplace! I dispair with footballers.

Brentford will take some stopping at this rate tho!

  11. Why is anyone ever concerned about Citeh selling him?

We would not see a single penny of any sell on clause for team building.

No, maybe not, but if it helped pay off the (Gazal & Blitz) loans, it would make us a more saleable and investable asset!

New managers always offer platitudes to players, who knows what Pellegrini really thinks of Richards. Hopefully he'll soon work out he's overrated and flog him!

  12. It was against someone like Wycombe or Stevenage with games & races on Little Wembley, penalty shoot-outs, fire engines, face-painting, stalls, etc but despite being pretty well promoted in the lead up there wasn't a huge turnout. Seemed to be predominantly the same people that turn up to Boundary Blues events. They were actively collecting email addresses from attendees so they'll have a good idea about whether it was a success or not.

By virtue of the fact we haven't repeated it I assume it wasn't a success. That's a real shame. Although, I still can't recall it.

  13. I went to Wycombe away season before last, and they had a big family day set up in the car park - which is smaller than ours - and all the kids were kitted out in Wycombe gear, both parents, grandparents were there.

It looked a cracking day out for families and made me wonder why we don't do something similar for what we expect to be a poorly attended Saturday league fixture!

Barry, if you're reading this thread, lets get that Mechanical Bull Peter Kay used on Pheonix nights!!! I quote, "it'll be sh1tting money".
