software recovery

A laptop I bought recentley has had to go off for repair bacause it wouldn't boot up. I sent it back to Acer as it was only 3 months old and they now tell me there's nothing wrong with the machine and it's a software problem. Surprise, surprise, that's not covered under the warranty. They want £70 to perform a software recovery.

 

Just spent 10 minutes on the phone venting my spleen to them, but they're not interested.

 

Now never having had any problem like this before, I've no idea if I'm being ripped off or not. Any ideas as to if I can get this done cheaper locally??

A local PC shop will reinstall your OS for a lot cheaper than that. You can do it yourself if you've got all the disks etc.

Depends on the operating system.

VISTA is about an hour = £35.00 incl. VAT labour (set price)

XP Home/PRO is about 1½ hours = £45.00 incl. VAT (set price)

 

£70.00 from Acer is about right they normally charge £65.00 per hour + VAT.

Ian, I think I'll just ask Acer to send it back unrepaired and bring it into your goodself and save myself £35!!
