On April 25th 2010, Chaddy the Owl will set off on a 26 and a bit mile run to support the Stroke Association. Training for Chaddy will start in earnest at the end of October and he will be seen weekly on the treadmill of his local gym. For reasons that are obvious to most Latics fans he will be avoiding the exercise bikes!

Chaddy will be helped on his run by Oldham Athletic Community Trust’s Manager, Colin Moore, who has agreed to be our favourite Owl for the day!

Chaddy and Colin are looking forward to the challenge and really hope you can support them raise funds for an extremely worthy cause!

Background

The North West has the highest mortality rates from stroke in the UK, with Oldham having one of the highest mortality rates in the whole of Greater Manchester. We want to reduce this inequality in Oldham and across Greater Manchester.

Each year approximately 150 Oldham residents die from a stroke and there are over 4150 people living in the Oldham’s with the after effects of stroke. However, there are things people can do to reduce the risk of stroke, for example it is estimated that if everyone with high blood pressure in Oldham were identified and treated appropriately, 163 strokes per year would be prevented.

Campaign

The Stroke Association, The Stroke Association is the only charity solely concerned with preventing stroke and ensuring that everyone touched by stroke across the UK gets the help they need. Services they offer include…

- Stroke Helpline

- Family and Carer Support Service

- Communication Support Service

- Stroke clubs

- Welfare grants

- Research

- Campaigns

Now Chaddy is looking for sponsorship and donations towards the charity and its fund raising efforts. Every penny raised will go to the Stroke Association!

If I wore a hat I would take it off to you. You have my support for the cause and good luck for the big day. Watch out for those Millwall fans!

You can take Oldham fans out of the Southend pub, but you can't take the pub out of Oldham fans.

Ohhhhhh right NOW I get it! I was confused for a while cos mathematically, in people's terms, two humans into one owl suit doesn't go...

Good luck Colin! What a thing to do and for a great cause. I did the Paris marathon 8 years ago and that was killer. I can't imagine doing it as Chaddy!

Chaddy the Owl Supports Stroke Campaign

Chaddy the Owl is lending his support to the latest North West campaign by The Stroke Association aimed to encourage people to take control of their blood pressure in order to prevent stroke.

The Oldham Athletics’ mascot is joining The Know Your Blood Pressure campaign kick-off on Saturday, 17th April, which will see free blood pressure testing and stroke prevention information sites across the North West. Several events have been organised in partnership with Rotary clubs throughout the area.

Chaddy, will be at the Spindles Shopping Centre in Oldham on the 17th from 10am to 4pm, doing his final training session on a stationary bicycle in preparation for running the London Marathon on 25th April. He is hoping to cycle 50 miles on the bike before running 26.2 miles the following week.

Colin Moore the Community Manager at Oldham Athletic Community Trust has chosen to support The Stroke Association to raise the profile of the organisation and the importance of making people aware of strokes and the need for prevention because he has seen how stroke has affected a family member. His commitment to the charity knows no limits, as he’ll be running the 26.2 miles following knee surgery and in full Chaddy the Owl costume.

Colin Moore, Oldham Athletic Community Trust Manager said:

“We are delighted that Chaddy the Owl has agreed to endure 26.2 miles to not only raise funds for the Stroke Association but also to raise the profile of the symptoms and effects this medical condition has on thousands of people in Oldham every year. If by supporting this initiative we can encourage 100 more people to have their blood pressure tested or 20 more people that can recognise the symptoms of a stroke then each part of the gruelling 26.2 miles will have been worth it as ultimately this could save lives.”

Julie Ainscow, Regional Communications Officer for The Stroke Association said:

“We’re extremely grateful for Chaddy’s support with this latest campaign. It’s extremely important that people, whatever their age, know their blood pressure and have it checked regularly. This can of course be carried out with a visit to a GP but Know Your Blood Pressure Day is an ideal opportunity for people to have their blood pressure checked for free at convenient locations in their area.”

“It’s estimated that 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered by people in the UK each year could be prevented by controlling high blood pressure. High blood pressure is often called the ‘silent killer’ as it does not always have any symptoms. Having this quick and simple test could save your life.”

“Come along to one of our many events taking place across the North West on and around the 17th April.”

In addition to the events listed on the website, the local branches of the Rotary International are holding the following Know Your Blood Pressure events:

Manchester Arndale Centre 10am - 4pm

Oldham Spindles Shopping Centre 9am – 4pm

Cheadle Cheadle Village Hotel 10am – 4pm

Bolton Morrisons, Chorley 10am – 4pm

Wigan Sainsbury’s, Worthington Way 9am – 4pm

To find out where your nearest event is, please visit www.stroke.org.uk.

High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for having a stroke yet it is estimated a quarter of adults have high blood pressure and are completely unaware of it. The Know Your Blood Pressure campaign are hosting almost 600 testing events that offer free blood pressure checks, advice on stroke and its prevention to people of all ages.

David Fowler, President of RIBI said:

“Rotary members are dedicated to improving the lives of others and good health is one of our key aims. Through our partnership with The Stroke Association, our members are helping to save countless lives by hosting these blood pressure checks across great Britain and Ireland. I would urge everyone who sees the teams in action to take advantage and get their blood pressure assessed. The check-up will take a matter of minutes and could help identify potential health problems."

NOTES TO EDITORS:

The Stroke Association annually runs the Know Your Blood Pressure campaign with partners such as Rotary International and the Ambulance Service Trust to offer blood pressure testing to members of the public.

The national Know Your Blood Pressure day is Saturday 17 April 2010 and free blood pressure testing events will be happening across the country.

Last year, the Know Your Blood Pressure initiative saw over 13,000 people across the UK take up the chance to have their blood pressure taken. As a result, nearly 3,000 were advised to see their GP for more tests and a further 200 were urged to seek medical advice immediately

We will provide everyone running a Know Your Blood Pressure event with an event pack which includes practical advice, guidelines and promotional materials as well as ongoing support to make running your event even easier.

Blood Boiling Britain

A whopping 94% of us in the North West say that something in everyday life makes our blood boil on a regular basis; with bad manners, bad driving, and reality shows cited as the main reasons.

Results of new research carried out online by YouGov for a partnership working group made up of The Stroke Association, Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) and the Ambulance Service helps highlight the importance of people getting blood pressure tested regularly.

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 253 in the North West out of 2116 adults nationally. Fieldwork was undertaken between 16th - 18th March 2010. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

After lack of manners; queue jumping and speaking too loudly on a mobile phone were the unpopular habits in other people that we find most annoying.

Forty one percent of people in the North West don’t feel that their blood pressure rises when they get stressed about something; when in fact it does. Regularly increasing stress levels therefore puts people at a higher risk of stroke thus highlighting the need for people to get their blood pressure tested at a Know Your Blood Pressure event near them.

Worryingly 27% of us in the North West say that they can’t even remember the last time they had their blood pressure checked.
