it said he also played for notts co. cant remember his name now.

The legendary Jack Shufflebotham, which with a name like that is possibly why the day became famous!

sold him to Southport Central for £150 in 1911

can we not sell him again . .

£150 is £12,500 in todays money with an exact inflation calculator.

But with the football transfer fees inflation I bet that is worth more than Micah Richard's...

Before my time, but I relate this story from Stewart W. Beckett's book 'Pine Villa & Oldham Athletic A 100 Year Journey', where the picture is to be found.

Jack Shufflebotham, a centre half from Small Heath, was one of David Ashworth's signings after Latics had been elected into the Football League in 1907. Those players were later to be given the name 'Ashworth's Babes'.

In mid-February 1908 the 'Babes' played Fulham at BP in a game littered with fouls and doubtful refereeing decisions (no change there!). At the end of the game, a 3-3 draw, the ref had to be escorted from the pitch by a :bobby: and it was alleged that Latics goalkeeper Bob Hewitson had thrown a missile at the ref. Extreme elements (the 'FYC' of the day) in the crowd hung about Sheepfoot Lane after the game, and when the Fulham charabanc (probably one of Barlow's) tried to pass on its way to Werneth Station, it was stoned :violent111: . Although windows were shattered, none of the Fulham party suffered injury, but some were badly shaken by the incident.

At an F.A. Inquiry Latics were found guilty of misconduct and fined £10 (yes ten pounds!). Warning notices were posted around BP to deter a repetition. At the same Inquiry hearing, goalkeeper Hewitson was found guilty of throwing mud at the ref and of inciting a riot. :redcard: He was banned for 14 days, after which he played only two more games for Latics before being suspended for insubordination :ass1: by the Club's board. In the close-season he joined newly-elected Tottenham Hotspur, making 30 appearances in their promotion-winning side.

Happy Days!

Back in those day you could get a bird's eye view from the Broadway Stand.
