The 35-year-old left-back, who lives in Norfolk with Huddersfield-born wife Lisa and baby daughter Olivia, is taking a coaching post with the age-group sides at Norwich City. Charlton racked up 39 appearances with Oldham Athletic last season but rejected the chance to return and will now focus on achieving the next stage of his coaching qualifications. Brought up in Skelmanthorpe, Charlton started his career with Town – where his father Wilf was also a player in the Fifties – in 1989 and made 157 appearances before a £700,000 move to Southampton, where he spent five years in the top flight. Almost half Charlton’s games have been in the Premiership with Southampton, Bolton and Norwich, while he also had a spell at Birmingham. Charlton was the first player from Huddersfield to go to the old National Soccer School at Lilleshall while his family were close friends of Danny Bergara, the former Stockport manager who died last week. I thought he had another year too, but I think his financial demands would have restricted us greatly. Good luck to him, and many thanks.
