slurms mckenzie
Since Joan Laporta became president, Barça have gone on quite an aggresive recruitment campaign in Asia, Africa and The Middle East in the hope of attracting thousands of subscribers to their TV channel and various internet services....nothing wrong with that. However in many muslim countries and most of all in Saudi Arabia, club officials have been told that the club is very popular, however the badge which has the St George on it is offensive, as it reminds muslims of the christian crusaders. Inter ran into a few problems in Turkey earlier this season for their centenary strip (white shirt with a huge cross on it) with some Turkish politicians even calling for the shirt to be banned!!! Barça have now made special shirts and other merchandising to be sold in muslim countries, that doesn't have the cross on them!....more than a club, or just a cynical, unprincipled money making stunt??? OldhamSheridan
Like any other club, they are a money making enterprise (otherwise they'd become pretty poor pretty quickly). I reckon the Unicef stunt is just a means to an end, too. Stick with this for five years, making a minimal loss, whilst retaining the moral highground switch to a conventional sponsor*. *Not that they haven't done this in the past anyway (3). Sorry. I didn't make it clear that I think Barca are absolute stars for making UNICEF their first shirt sponsor. One in the eye for those who would commercialise everything to do with footie. One in the eye for those who would commercialise everything to do with footie. apoligies ...ive read it the wrong way(as ive got another eye on work here!) i pay £110 per year to be a member of barcelona football club. i'm chuffed to feck that about £7 of that, along with the other 152,000++ paid up members donated around £1000,000 to these charities...and barca don't claim it as "their" donation-but from its members. barca donate a % of all net profits every year to these charities too. as you say, wonder if them up the road from here would be happy to do the same? the downside to the shirt "sponsor" now is that the club have lost revenue because some fans don't want ANYTHING on the shirt regarding a sponsor or charity. and remember, the club is owned by its members..its fans. hey ho.
