    I enjoyed it. 😀

On the second leg of that semi, I travelled up the night before because it was an earlyish kick off. I got the bus into town. But I had to get off to be sick, I was that nervous.  A feat I then repeated on the way to the City Ground for our play-off semi clincher in 2010.

Our record in play off games is sensational, really. Counting drawn finals that went to penalties, our record is P 26, W 18, D5, L 3.  On the downside, we haven't won promotion automatically since 1985 (without actually playing on the night in question), and haven't clinched promotion at home since the 1920s.

    By comparison, our record in play off games is;

P6, W1 D1 L4, where our only win, saw us concede in the last minute to lose on away goals, so even our only win felt like the most gut wrenching loss.

  5. Prior to the kick off in the 2023/24 season, Oldham Athletic hadn't won an opening day fixture since the 2013/14 season. This is still the case.

I’m not for one minute advocating getting on his back after a few games,

but if he’s bottom half in Oct/Nov then it’s not unreasonable for fans to question him. Or do you not think that’s fair?

Some are already warming up to do that (if it happens) and that isn't going to help.....

Totally fair..... but that's not what we're arguing against.

Does that mean DU should get some positive thinking, forward looking, patient support...? Yes.

So with fabulous owners, it seems like we still can’t the judge the manager if he struggles- after 12 months in charge and relatively great backing

Chris, I think Ackey answers the point eloquently..... and is what we were trying to discuss. He can't expect patience in a state of perpetuity.... but it would be bloody handy if folk didn't instantly jump on his back if we aren't playing like Brazil from the off..... some people are itching to say 'I told you so' if we aren't instantly in a two horse race with Chesterfield for the title..... for me (Andy) Top 7 is a minimum requirement, or questions - quite rightly - will be asked.....

  9. We're back!

As Oldham fans look forward to a season at the right end of the table for a change, Matt & Andy sit down for a chat with Latics first team manager David Unsworth. The gaffer tells us about his first 12 months in charge, his ambitions for the season and his aspirations to manage the club for many years to come.

If you'd like to be a fan guest on the show over the coming season, please contact us either on here or via our socials.

Luton are showing what can be achieved by running a club well and sensibly. And that its possible to have that level of success without the need to find a billionaire with loose pockets.  Are they a one-off? It's hard to know without knowing what other clubs are being run in a similar manner. Hopefully this is a solid blueprint for us to follow.

Might have to give the @BPAS episode with the suppoerts trust another listen.

It's really is worth it. It was a good episode. Full of sage advice for us, but also a clear pathway to success. I confess to thinking they had missed their chance last season and thought Kevin (the chap from LTST) was being wishful to think they could replicate it..... but, what did I know. He was right. Their recruitment, headed by Mick Harford, has been exceptional. For example, their big striker that ran Sunderland ragged in the week, called Elijah Adebayo, was signed from Walsall who we were competing against - at the time - in League Two. in fact he scored at BP as we lost 3-2 in Dec '20.

  12. And with that, the season is over. This episode was recoded before the triumph / disaster that was Loud, Live and Beefy and Bromley at home in the last game. Andy, Dave and Matt look through the squad as it stands and decide who they think should stay or go...but with a twist.

I don’t have a problem with the recruitment set up. It’s something we’ve needed for a long time. I think though, that if you give a manager a three year deal, and he’s clearly here for the long haul.’, then he should definitely have the final say on signings.

I imagine he does, in as much as if he doesn’t agree they won’t sign a player, but he can equally be the least convinced party in agreement and/or be persuaded. It goes both ways. It’s human nature right?

  14. 47 minutes ago, League one forever said:

    You have. . .

Any every time I’ve heard you say it-  it’s always to bring context as to why Unsworth might be struggling, or not getting a tune out of them.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say- ‘this recent run of form has been good, but it isn’t all down to Unsworth- credit must go to the club for how they recruit players’

    If you have, apologies.

But the first paragraph has definitely been prevalent, and it cuts both ways.

I’m happy to cut him slack with recruitment if he’s not in sole charge.

Equally though - the club must take credit when we do well, as they have had a big input.

Ok….. but I haven’t heard anyone criticising the club for recruitment to feel the need to defend the club….. whereas people have oft attacked Unsworth alone for signing players on long contracts that have not made enough of a difference.

When we interviewed Darren and he explained how recruitment now worked, I thought we were & all the listeners would be extremely positive about it.

My defending of Unsworth has been focussed on the fact that I felt it would take longer than the time he’d had to make a discernible difference, given that we could only sign players that were unwanted by their clubs and the summer would see more and better players become available.

One could argue that giving him that time is now beginning to pay dividends given our upturn in form, whilst conceding performances are yet to be overly convincing.

    40 minutes ago, Steve_R said:

That’s the way it always comes across to me. For example, I definitely remember it being said in the podcast when fans were questioning why he signed Reid then continually left him on the bench, that Unsworth didn’t sign him and probably didn’t want him.

I still think this was likely to be the case. Unsworth wanted Nuttall, but was presented with Reid. It’s perfectly conceivable to me that he agreed to the signing but eventually couldn’t find a place for him playing 1 up top - as he was persisting with at the time - because that’s not his game & when he did try it, it clearly didn’t work. I also think Unsworth didn’t fancy Fondop at that point and was being belligerent over not playing 2 strikers when it seemed obvious to most of us he should try it. This is where I think he’s learning on the job about this level of football. He and us will be better off for it next season.

I’m genuinely excited for next season. For the the first time since 2009, save a fleeting period with Lee Johnson.

  15. 1 hour ago, Lee Sinnott said:

Depends. If he does sign and is good, then it will be an Unsworth signing. If he signs and is poor, then it will be a signing made by the club. That's what my man @BPAS @lookersstandandywill have us believe anyway...

I fascinate with how myopic you become over certain topics.

Darren Royle told us on the podcast that the data team identify possible targets, the scouting dept watch them and provide a level of quality control and then possible signing are presented to the coaching staff. If all depts agree, they approach cubs/agents. Ergo, ALL signings are CLUB signings, not just David Unsworth's, Steve Thompson's or anyone else's.

Now its obviously likely that one of the depts is keener than another on any individual player. For example, one imagines Nuttall & Yarney could well be DU's preference, whereas Reid could have been Thompson's, but it's a team decision on all occasions. Gone are the days of Marco & Mo presenting Pete Wild with Urko Vera & Sohny Sefil, or Big Baz ringing up anyone he knows begging for loans.

Nah, deadly serious. Most players perform well on their debut. It isn't that long ago that Threkeld and Mitchell Roberts were being compared to Duxbury and Andy Barlow on the podcast. Even some of our worst players have had good debuts...

You know and I know that an Everton u-23 manager with the riches at his disposal wouldn't have taken/needed to take a blind bit of notice of a Blackburn player let alone remembered one 5 years later as he was dragging a once proud club to it's third relegation in four years and probable oblivion.

Nah, if he played against his team twice, scored goals and was nominated for player of the year, he'd have taken notice of him.

We are not going down. :D
