Trying to think of the last player we had who might have been thus described

Technically Peter Clarke. Sheridan and Eyres would be on the list too.

Chris Eagles retired after playing for us briefly and Paul Murray retired after being on our books, but I don't recall him playing.

Plymouth to Oldham and back on a freezing Friday night in December, that is some hard yakka. They should run a "Where are they now?" piece on those legends the next time we play each other.

It was "Mad Friday" too, so even harder yakka. Was my first night game.

Another 4 of us have too!

We need to find a pub back in the centre to collectively celebrate our 9th away win on the bounce.

Drank in the Maltings last season. Round the corner from the station and was a very decent pub, especially if like me you drink Cider.

  4. I've a very vague memory of away fans being housed in the other main stand paddock in the late 80s. Not sure it made that much difference then.

I think thanks to the previous incompetent regime our safety certification needed improving so this is why we have had to put a load of stewards in the Chaddy with the home fans for those games when home fans are allowed in there. Was Ebbsfleet the last game that happened?

But if we need something at the end of April against Wealdstone I can see the Chaddy being "fully" open for home fans. I think that is what the club are hoping for with this measure.

Incidentally on a slightly related topic I have always had my suspicions that home fans were moved out of the Chaddy when a former player who once flicked the V's at the Chaddy was manager is more than a coincidence.

    All aboard the promotion train...

If we signed Jermaine Darlington to play alongside Stockton, it might just keep our promotion push on the right track.

The fact that despite it being home to the first railway in the world, it is now a crap line and you can't even get a direct train between the 2 towns is a bit of a metaphor for the football club.

It's a good question. There's no mention of a fee on either website but he was under contract at Vale, it's described as a permanent transfer on the Vale website, permanent signing on ours. They seem to have allowed him to leave after signing a midfielder on loan from Brighton for the rest of the season. Given he wasn't catching their team presumably if a fee was involved it was nominal. But a good question to ask someone who might know.

Think it may have been one of those deals where because his contract was up at the end of the season he was allowed to leave early. Sometimes those deals involve a fee, think we paid one for Rhys Murphy in similar circumstances, but may not do if the player isn’t catching the team.

I feel quite happy with Conlon signing and the pedigree does suggest the club's intent to build a squad capable of progressing out of this league. Credit to Mellon and his team for getting this one over the line, we now appear to have an actual, proper manager and assistant in place. I still believe promotion [without a miraculous run and set of circumstance] is not on the cards this season, however, next season could be it. 💪 :D

We could drop a place or two in the next few weeks and promotion is still on the cards.

If we are in the playoffs at the end of the season even in 6th or 7th and promotion is still on the cards. No-one, bar the very unlikely to be relevant Chesterfield, will want to face us at home. We've beaten the teams in 3rd to 5th away this season and were on top at Bromley until the water break at 25 minutes, when BL9 8 signed his P45. I don't think Bromley will fancy their chances against us with 5PM as our manager.

I'm not sure why Norman was dropped initially, but Hudson has come in and done well. MOM today.

Don't think GK is an area we need to worry about..

Norman did his groin, I think in warm-ups at the Halifax home game.

While the save midway through the second half will rightly grab the headlines. He made a very good save at 0-0 too. Comfortably out MOTM today.

Thought we had a vote and picked that ?

Never liked it when we, or Andy Williams, sang it !  👎

If @Diego_Sideburnswas still active on here as he used to be. He'd probably reiterate that the only time we had a vote on goal music, "The Specials", "One Step Beyond" won. For some reason it was barely played, and not because we didn't score many goals either.

Have they always offered streaming select fixtures to UK on a Saturday? - I think they do on a Tuesday evening usually.

Well the National League has only had streaming for about a year so it's hard to say. But I can see games in the EFL being streamable tomorrow as it's FA Cup 3rd round so all the teams in the top 2 flights are playing in that, and quite a few aren't playing Saturday 3pm.

    Not sure Dave,

4 possibly of the top 5 'recently' promoted? which supports the best of NL competes with L2 argument

3 of the bottom 4 I'd think of as non league teams punching above their weight (- but these things all hinge on when you started watching football.)

Colchester will be on their 8th manager in 3 years- that feels like an indicator of decline.

Sutton have a decent non-league pedigree, including famously knocking out the holders of the FA cup. Colchester are usually a decent lower level league club but have spent some time in non-league, but are probably on a downward trajectory. IIRC when we were leading against them in 2022 we were above them, so they aren't recent strangers to relegation peril in League 2.

Salford and Forest Green are glorified pub teams. Doesn't FFP cover the last 3 seasons, that might explain their issues, as it doesn't apply in the conference.

    1 hour ago, Longlostfan said:

Think that is a fair observation Dave.

The bottom four maybe not full blown latics crisis but not sure any of them are healthy.

Don't know if anything is happening behind the scenes at FGR but they look on course for successive relegations

Sutton look like they have peaked

Rapid manager turnover at Colchester -You probably have more intel on what's happening there than I do

Hopefully Salford have peaked and we pass them on their way down

I'd quite like Salford to stay up until we get promoted and then for us to relegate them. But that's probably very wishful thinking.

I think the money man behind FGR is also funding "Just Stop Oil" so he may not be keeping as keen an eye on FGR as he once was. Plus they keep getting knocked back over a new ground, which may have implications for their FFP.

As much as I'd take a play-off spot, we'd be so underprepared for league football.

Has Detective Shitpeas hacked your account?

The top 7 of the National League is easily on a par with the bottom half of League 2. There's far far far too much dysfunction in League 2, or teams who are glorified pub teams who's owners are restricted in their spending.

If we get promoted this season we'll be fine in League 2, let's remember that 1 of 5PM's promotions is in league 2 with a team who went up in the playoffs from National League the season before.

  13. I wouldn’t be touching Mancini until the close season, a young player who has played 8 games of professional adult football, and has just had 4 months out with a hamstring injury, so it must have been a significant one, is not worth signing from a club in the same division.

If he has played in the majority of Hartlepool’s game between now and April, then I would certainly consider him in the summer. Little point in signing a player to improve our chances of making the playoffs, which we are only out of on goal difference, if he isn’t going to play in enough games. Especially when we already have a midfielder who is on his day top quality in this division but he can’t stay fit.

From what I’ve read from Hartlepool fans, Mancini has been injured and shouldn’t be playing any more than half an hour tops tomorrow. Their top goalscorer is still missing, their defence concede a lot of goals, and they want Askey gone.
Expecting goals from both teams, but us to win by a goal or two.

He played 15 minutes (+ injury time) on Boxing Day, so can see him perhaps going to a half today. Would think he'd play more than 30 minutes but that might depend on the game situation.

    I doubt he'll play a full 90 though.

Any chance of a knighthood for Frank instead of  undeserving politicians and celebs?

I’d suggest anyone writing the nomination gets help from a local government official, MP better than local councillor, to support the process.

Of course there’s a chance Frank has turned an honour down already, it’s not that unusual.

If they do, I hope they don't give him a microphone to do a speech. The bloke is a legend though.

No speeches at a honours ceremony, the recipient usually gets to speak to the royal in attendance for a few minutes, the higher the award the longer the conversation.

plus our run in looks on the more dificult side, which is what we need to perform!!

But how good will it feel if we beat Dale to cement our playoff spot and also eliminate them from contention.

Think TNT may have already earmarked that game for broadcast.
