  1. The obvious one for us owd farts is the 11-0 against Southport in 62....

Now here is my tale of woe....

I had a season ticket back then....waether was awful...real snow not like this dusting we had the past 2 weeks.

drifts all over the place..old ladies being dug out of houses....oh and yes my dad came home at dinnertime and said

    Match is off !!!!

So I didnt go and i sat in front of the Grandstand teleprinter as it clicked Oldham 11 (ELEVEN) Southport 0

Never forgave my dad .......well I did after about 20 years

    :(

  2. With season tickets from just £25 (a perfect Christmas pressie), the football on display significantly better under Dickov than DP and a feeling of optimism around Boundary Park this season, I thought it worth asking the question - will you be buying a season ticket for the remainder of the season?

I already have one, but those who have lapsed, in many cases for understandable reasons, I think now would be a rather good point in time to return to the fold.

£14 a game for adults, £7 for concessions (there's Grandad's pressie sorted!) and less than £2 for kids.

This will get you in to the Boxing Day game against Carlisle and also guarantee a seat for the visits of Rochdale and Sheffield Wednesday.

    LINKY TO OFFER DETAILS.

Ring the club on 0161 785 5150 for more information or call in.

    Just had a thought......what qualifies for concession ? Over 60 ?

  3. The other thread shows we've had some propper hard cases at latics; we've also had some complete softarses. Who is the softest/wimpiest player we've had?

My vote - Danny "the next Sheridan" Boshell. He ran like a girl, and tackled like one too.....

David Currie.......................nobody can find a more cowardly player than him. Still makes me seeth when I think of his cowardice in the face of the enemy.

  4. George is described in the reference book as "a dour, craggy Scot with a tenacious and forceful presence".

I always felt Alan Wiliams (father of Gary) was the hard man in the 1962-63 promotion-winning team, when he was ever-present. In four seasons at BP he missed only ten games. He's described in the book as "rugged and fearless" and I wouldn't disagree with that.

In those days there were always a few hard men in a team. Jimmy Frizzel was no softy... Ken Branagan early sixties.....Brian Jarvis ....Sandy Wann was so tough it made your toes curl....he looked it too..............early seventies....Bobby Collins .....and Ronnie Blair of course.

  5. More for the older fans here.

In the 70's we had 2 great wingers under Friz. Groves deservedly stood out for his flashness and pure entertainment value, but on the other wing was a certain George McVitie, who IMHO was one of the most naturally gifted players you are ever likely to see. Like Holden he lacked pace, but his natural ability more than made up for that. If he took corners for us today, we would be lethal.

Also, we were fortunate to have the mercurial Bobby Collins but for too short a time at the end of his career. The wee man was class.

More recently Stainrod stands out from the early 80's and at the same time there was a certain Paul Atkinson, who never really fulfilled his potential and who I feel made a mistake joining Watford at the time. They may have got to the cup final in '84 but I always felt he was better than that.

If you really need a consistent stand out though from the last 40 years then probably the dodger. Good 1st touch, always in the right place at the right time, disciplined (well, on the pitch anyway) could tackle, good engine and yet was so elusive to the opposition. And to think City let him go for £70,000, what a steal! What would a player like that be worth now. We signed Palmer when we sold Stainrod to QPR for £285,000 (was bought for £65,000) and supporters were up in arms. Hindsight is a great thing.

I know it's off topic, but talking about steals, we have made quite a few over the years. Irwin, Linigan & Ritchie from Leeds, Palmer, Barrett and Warhurst from the Council tenants. Oh and Groves £10,000!!!!!!! I bet there's loads if you think about it.

Alan McNeil....and from the same era......Tommy Bryceland

  6. In the first half, that's one of the best individual performances i've ever seen at BP. He was absolutely unplayable...

Was it that good ? Was not present so cannot comment. Next home game I am returning to BP.....

One individual performance I will never forget was Alan Mcneils debut in the late sixties. Waterlogged pitch..peeing it down...2 down in first 15 mins to Aldershot..... then Mcneill had had a look and took over......4-2 win........awesome.

  7. Yet again - in the main stand watching t'Latics minutes after Utd finished their game at Villa.

It's been said so many times before I know, but what a model pro that fella is. Total respect.

While he wears that red shirt no respect whatsoever....I do not want him in a blue shirt full stop

  8. Happy anniversary!my grandad was at that game.how earthshattering was it to have signed him do you think?Wonder what the modern equivalent would be

    Probably a fat Fabregas...........

I went to my first game Boxing day that season.......Bobby Johnstone is probably the best player I have ever seen at the club ..when he wanted to be of course.

  9. Dickov rejected that American team Thierry Henry has signed for, (New York Red Bulls or something?) to manage us. Am presuming they would of offered PD alot more money than us..

Also Scholes is a millionaire now, he seems sensible with everything, never in the headlines being seen have a booze night out, so am positive he will have a few million stored away, money isn't everything.

and he lives just upt road
