  1. As good as the atmosphere was on Sunday (and it came across great on TV)....just how rockin' would the Lookers have been if still up. For those of you who never watched from there, for all its frailties......it was a place of fantastic atmosphere for the most part. I miss that part of Latics......looking back, something much bigger than the stand was lost the day they decided to pull it down.

  2. wow, best post ive ever seen... spot on in every aspect! can i ask, how long did this take you?!

The giveaway there Kieran is that you only have two posts on OWTB so you probably haven't been around for very long. I assure you there are many more interesting contributors to OWTB than me and most of them much more regular in appearance! Anyhow, peculiar question.....but to answer.... not very long at all. I don't often say much.....but when i do it can roll off the tongue a bit ;)

  3. Just posted it on Twitter for the Twitter world to see. and duly credited you otid.

"@joshuapsjones: owtb.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=41021 this is one of the best posts I've ever seen on OWTB, well done 'otid', whoever you may be. #oafc #lfc"

I realise this marks me down as a fossil......but i've never, ever been on twitter. I understand that one can post 'snippets' of information and that if one has 'followers' they can all see it. I've heard of hashtag this and that.....but it just hasn't grabbed my imagination.....but feel free to share it with the world of twitter should they be for whatever reason interested!

  4. We hope you enjoyed your visit to our ‘:censored:ty stadium’ in our ‘:censored:ty Northern town’ on Sunday. It seems the internet is awash with astonishment that our players had the audacity to turn up and ‘play’ against your evidently superior, expensively assembled whingeing Nancy boys.

Let’s therefore….set a few things straight. The FA Cup is famous the world over for the very notion that anything from a ‘genuine pub team’ to the greatest team in the land (something that you once were long ago….and very quickly need to realise you no longer are) may possibly meet should the lesser of those two teams have the good fortune to win through round after round of hard fought ties, often in surroundings almost as bad as those in which the majority of you reside.

At the third round proper stage (that is 8 rounds after the competition starts), the Jessies of your upper echelons join the competition and collectively hope for an easy draw and a simple passage to the next round. Generally, they hope to gain a ‘home’ tie as travelling to places like Mansfied and Oldham can occasionally be uncomfortable, although I have to point out that on numerous visits to the mighty sporting cathedral of Anfield…..i have yet to witness supporter comforts any better than those in which you were housed on Sunday. We may not provide hangers for your bizarre two-piece shiny outfits, but we did at least provide receptacles known as ‘bins’ should you have taken the hint to discard your seventies clothing in shame at any time. It was pointed out by an errant educated imposter amongst your contingent, that our plan to rid you of the derision attached to your collective dress sense was doomed to failure from the start, as those very same receptacles are known as a food source back from where you crawl. Alas, we tried, and you should bear it in mind for the next time you visit…..likely for a League 1 fixture some time before 2016.

On to the game. It may well have escaped your attention but Oldham Athletic are the archetypal banana skin. We are you see……somewhat experienced at deflowering the mighty. You may remember just a few years ago, we completed a similar unthinkable act of lowering the trousers of your superior neighbours at the other end of Stanley Park. If we could do it to them…..on their own turf……why the hell could you not see it might be possible for us do the same to an inferior outfit like yours? We also did the same a few years earlier to that other ‘big time Charlie’ known as Manchester City. Now, we know we don’t exactly make it easy for your guys. We should, given our lowly status, roll over very quickly after the initial five minutes of token resistance……hell, we’ve been doing it for every other team in League 1 all season, so why should we be any different for Liverpool....yep, we are asking the same question ourselves!

Well, for starters……your players are the most sickeningly overpaid, jumped up, self important, arrogant wankers that we’ve had the pleasure of spoiling this year. We would, without a shadow of a doubt, have preferred to play either of the Manchester clubs, because in fairness to your shower of :censored:e, they are possibly the only two teams (and supporters) in the country more abhorrent to us than yours. Did you REALLY think that we would just let you get on with your passage to the next round while you applauded and ‘olayed’ your way through? We can accept that you are in the main….let’s be kind here…..somewhat slower of wit than average…… but you surely didn’t think that all those people wearing blue colours were there to watch YOUR clowns did you? Hell no…..these people are so dyed in the wool blue that some of them have been coming back week after week just to see if Oldham can ever win a game! If you don’t believe me, just ask someone who can read to look in the paper for the attendance at the next home match. You’ve gone and burst the bubble now!

Anyhow, just to sum up. When you come to a lower league stadium….to play a lower league team…..you might learn to expect that it won’t necessarily be the cakewalk you expected. Yes, for sure…..the game will be more physical than that with which you are familiar. We don’t save it especially for you….it’s how life is down here in the troughs of football. We actually thought that the similarity of living in Liverpool when there is a whole country to explore might have resonated with you….apparently not….oh, i digress………

So, get over it….we beat you fair and square. For us, we actually thought some of our football was a delight to watch….although the majority of us preferred watching our guys kick :censored: out of yours…..in between laughing at your inept goalkeeper and your clothing.

Finally, we sincerely hope that by the time you come to visit for the impending League 1 Fixture (sadly, we may well be in League 2 soon and we're not sure you will drop that far…..but you never know) we would like to think that some of you might take personal hygiene more seriously than you currently do. We know it doesn’t matter to you but it does to us. If you want to see how life could be, make a trip to Warrington, where nearly half the people are now washing on a relatively frequent basis. Thanks.

  5. Latics V Liverpool FA cup match is live on ESPN 2 for anyone with Foxtel. Given it's Australia Day on Monday, no excuse for not staying up all night. Hopefully Murray will be in the AO Final as a prelude.

For Melbourne based Latics fans, It's also being shown live at Zagames Pub in Caulfield (corner of Prince's Highway and Derby Road....,.just near Caulfield Racecourse)

  6. On the basis that since formation in 1899 we've never won it, i think he makes a reasonable point. Also, Bradford didn't get to the semi final half way stage with a 3-1 lead by simply believing. I'll bet every one of their fans, players and coaching staff would have thought exactly the same as Simpson does as they entered round 4. Fact is, they're having a bit of a 'pinch me' season in the cup and performances bring belief. Until and if, we beat Liverpool, there has been precious little to inspire belief that we'll do any serious damage in the cup. Beat Liverpool though.....and we'll all be picking who we 'want' in the next round. It's what makes the world go round!

  7. Whilst I can agree with your point of view, it must be difficult to fully appreciate what is going on from the other side of the World. You have to be at BP to witness and sense the total lack of 'professionalism', in my opinion, that was on display. To me, playing professional football is a lifestyle that a relative handful of people are lucky enough to achieve. The players are looked after health-wise. From what I have seen, they train in the mornings and go home in the afternoons and then, they have to apply their professional skills in a competitive 'work-place' for a matter of a few hours a week.

Of course there is mundaneness in the life of an average professional footballer, as there is in everybody's, but real work pressure is having to travel several hours a day to and from the office by public transport, working in a crappy environment for eight hours under consistent stress and then attempting to relieve that stress at the weekends by watching a bunch of well-paid 'professionals' put in a collectively abysmal shift at the 'office'.

PD can come out with all the excuses he likes.

I am getting pretty pi**ed off with it, now.

While displaced overseas, i'm not likely to argue with what you and the ever dwindling number of regular attendees witness each and every week. I do though, call upon an ever dwindling memory from the ups and downs of many a previous false dawn and the odd bizarre overachievement that fortunately saw us mix it with the best.

Regardless, at last count, there were 92 league clubs in the various enities that now make up English professional Football. I think it's fair to say that for the vast majority......the average of the last five years league placings represents where a team truly (currently) belongs. Not necessarilly where a team belongs by tradition or by 'size' of club or by history.....but where current performance, current stature, current collective ability determines. Honestly, Latics are where they belong. Tranmere are over achieving in the way that we all hoped we might. Sheffield United are under achieving on a scale probably ten times worse then we are. Stevenage and Crawley are over achieving (they are relatively new entities at this level and carry the 'surprise' factor). Frankly, i'm always a little surprised at how much 'over expectation' there is at Latics.

  8. As you're commenting from afar you won't have seen how piss poor this division is this season. We're under achieving big style, this squad is more than capable of being around the top 6 imo.

Fair enough Steve......my point being......that over the course of the season, if they are currently better than their current performances or league position suggest.......they are likely to finish there or thereabouts.....where they deserve, belong, should be and likely should remain. Mid table, League 1.

  9. If I got the salary that the players get for having most afternoons off and having to perform my job for an hour and a half, sometimes three hours per week, then I would expect to get a rollicking if I failed to do it to my utmost efficiency.

Yes, players do have "off days", as someone said, but those "off days" should not be on a match-day and they shouldn't involve most of the bloody players on the pitch. They should all donate their appearance fees to charity (and let's face it, 'appear' is just about all they managed to achieve).

    I totally agree with Corney.

Your point isn't bad, but the anaolgy is poor. In most people's job.....the majority of the week is 'mundane' at best. For some, there is routine and the occasional opportunity to 'shine'...as, for example in a sales role...or as a professional footballer. The notion that a professional footballer in League 1 only has to work for 90 or 180 minutes per week is at best, naive. Fact is, no matter how well (or poorly) an individual may play.....the team game can make the efforts of the same individual look less, or more fullsome than the individual would like. I don't believe that any player (except for the odd, toally demotivated and disenfranchised oddball) ever sets out to achieve less than his best. I haven't seen Latics play this season, but i can't readily remember seeing this type of individual pull on a blue shirt in over 40 years of watching Oldham Athletic.

It's the collective that matters. Sometimes, the players can influence (either postively or negatively) over and above their collective ability......sometimes, the management team likewise, but for the majority of teams......season in, season out.........they finish where their collective ability determines. From afar, Latics may be slightly under-achieving.........but championship material, they are not......with or without some talented loanees.

  10. You're a long way from home brother. I am sure you're not alone though. I know Tony Wood is in Australia right now and he does post on here from time to time. So there's a start for you. Also every saturday or night game as the case maybe ( well most providing the facility is running) you can go into the chat room on here, you'll get running commentary of the match from member's who are also in there.

Yep, i'm here (cheers Lags)....count me in. Never thought about the matchday chatroom.....might give it a go later!

  11. The loan and purchase complete simultaneously.

Much the same as a mortgage to buy a house.

It's a little more complex where there are multiple lenders, but the principles are much the same.

Since then they've renegotiated many of their credit facilities and brought in new lenders too. Much like remortgaging and / or taking a different product from your bank.

.....and the key being.....if you have a good track record of servicing debt.....you are making good profits for those that are lending you the money.....and there will be :censored: loads of lenders falling at your feet to let you do it again. The Glazers are experts at it and they make lots of money for their lenders.....lots of money for themselves and the world goes around. We can all argue whether or not manchester united is worth the $1bn they will likely sell it for but the fact is....if another investor is willing to pay the asking price, it's all fair game and no different from buying and selling property.
