  1. Well, actually I have. I've seen Latics play in the bottom flight at BP in front of crowds ranging from 2,500 (Hull City in the Third Division North) to 27,888 (Peterborough in the Fourth Division). If many of those present had been told that, one day, we'd be playing in the top flight for three seasons, and make two trips to Wembley, they'd have been well-satisfied and not wanted to return to those depths again.

Ditto....and possibly the best time ever watching Latics were not the glory years of the Royle era....but '71 to '75 with the majority of time being spent in the same league as we are now.....where crowds came back from the brink of similar to today to something akin to what might now delight us....

    .....the difference ?

    A product on the pitch!

  2. (I posted this on the wrong thread.....it might be more in context here!)

I was chatting to a United supporting mate in the back of a cab a few weeks ago (and he's a proper footy fan to be fair to him, goes home and away, Europe, used to watch Latics occasionally etc) and pointed out the proposed site. Firstly he commended the intention, then he raised an eyebrow at the location, then he said "So what's the capacity to be? 20,000?". I sheepishly muttered 12,000. His response? :goggle:

I'd be so much happier if it could be just 25% more - 15,000. For me, the expense would be worth the better perception, status and subsequent prospects, not to mention the additional revenue it could eventually generate.

Generally, i'm in agreement regarding capacity....probably only because i'm old enough to have witnessed the incredible rise in fortunes that saw us sold out every other week during the glory years....but then....i look at Darlington.....quite clearly, they shot for the stars and look at what happened. The general perception is that they are still the small town team they were at Feethams.....only they're stupid to boot!

More realistically, i look at Barnsley....if ever a team were destined to be 'similar' to us in terms of the size of the town, catchment area, two much bigger clubs on the doorstep etc....it's them. Like us, they went up to the hallowed premier league and came tumbling back down again. At least they developed their own traditional ground....but still, even in a division higher than us....they play to a two thirds empty stadium apart from two games a season. Next season, they'll likely get another two with Leeds and Hudds (may lose one with Sheff U)....

Truthfully though, if we manage to get a regular full house at 12,000 and we manage to play at Chamionship level....and both of these things happen in the next 15 years....i'd be absolutely delighted. Chances are, at best we'll get just the second option (and i'll be delighted with that)....so let's get real. There are two options only. The rest is no longer a debate except for those that wish to continue being heard bleating. I'm not happy with Failsworth, nor a limited capacity but as a realist (and one with ears) it's patently obvious that we have only one viable vehicle for change. Bleedin' get behind it!!

  3. Do you think the owners should make a statement of intent to their rivals and go for larger premises or remain perennially in the lower league chinese...

Good point...always been a believer in 'the product', if good enough bringing in the punters......there's a humongous Chinese in Rochdale town centre (used to be Chicago Rock) where the decor is pretty spectacular......pretty much always empty. (Could probably seat 12,000 for a good cup tie though  )

  4. As for Chinese, I'd back LeesLover's recommendation of a visit to the Blue Diamond...don't let the exterior (and interior, for that matter) put you off as the food is good...

Ditto. Far and away the most consistently good chinese for miles around. Small place, a bit on the cozy side but there's a decent sized overspill upstairs (that tends to get used most nights due to them nearly always being busy....always a good sign). Rochdale for a night out is....well, pretty quiet these days. Most of the clubs have closed but if you head into the centre of town there are a few half decent late night bars clustered together. Certainly not as dangerous as Oldham can be....and like most people acknowledge, it's more a case of those that want trouble will certainly find it....but otherwise, it's generally quite safe.

  5. For one what the hell is he doing on coaching him positional sense? We've dropped a bollock with goalkeeper and coach imo.

Tend to agree. I'm more than prepared to "get behind the lad" as much as anyone else......it's just plain bloody obvious that no amount of encouragement is ever going to improve his spatial awareness. If the work that we all have a right to expect is actually going on behind the scenes, is actually taking place.....then we have a right to see it practised on Saturday afternoon for real. If it ain't demonstrated when the whistle blows, you can't help but question either the ability or methodology (or both) of those charged with drilling him Monday to Friday.

  6. Brill is the only reason i have any doubt about Penney being the right man for the job. He comes across as so credible in everything he does apart from his selection of.....and continued blindness to......the fact that Brill isn't anywhere near the standard required to be successful at this level. It's not anything like a matter of confidence. Consecutive clean sheets builds confidence and we've had that.....did he venture off his line to resemble (nay, even pretend) that he might one day command just a small portion of that little box he goes to work in? No. You get that instinct at the academy, it's not something you learn in front of paying customers!

  7. Can anyone recommend a good book to read in order to understand world economics better? Its something I find very interesting as its basically explains what goes on in the world, I wouldnt know where to start though!

I wouldn't wish to come across in any way condescending, so please don't think i'm taking a cheap shot....but if you seriously have little in the way of understanding of world economics....and seriously wish to gain a broad based simplification of the subject then 'Economics for Dummies' is not a bad place to start.

  8. Sheff Wed announced their intentions to extend Hillsborough a matter of weeks ago - in no time at all the plans were submitted and permission received.

Other clubs have had seemingly smooth passages to improvement too..

Our owners have announced to a fanfare several schemes which have got peoples hopes and backs up in equal measure, namely Ferney Field and the Oldham Arena and again with Failsworth opinion on all sides is divided yet no dedicated plans have even been submitted yet. Perhaps if they had kept their cards closer to their chests one of the projects may have got off the ground, ok we can blame the council and the property market but the truth is in my opinion that if the tta are guilty of failure to get the projects off the ground then surely that failure can be atrributed to being a tad premature in their announcements.

Personally, i prefer a board that is prepared to be open (at least as open as it can be on the matters that it can share).....it's a complete no-win situation. Say summat and yer damned......don't and yer damned.

To be fair to Wednesday (and to Sheffield City Council), their plans involve so much more than just the partial redevelopment of a stadium and i suspect if our plans were just half as well thought out with respect to the community, we wouldn't have had much difficulty either.

  10. There were some Tranmere fans who didn't want Ronnie back, but I think the majority of us would have been delighted if Peter Johnson had accepted he made a major blunder, got rid of Barnes & McAteer, and re-instated Moore as manager.

After our near-miss on making the play-offs last year, I guess nobody would have predicted the events of the summer and our current predicament, but that's football!

Most lower division football clubs exist in volatile conditions now though, so who knows what other dramas are yet to unfold at Prenton Park or Boundary Park.

Just on your gaff, is it cut and dry you are moving to Failsworth, or is there still a chance you will remain where you are, or at least move somewhere acceptably close to the town? Shame if you do have to move there, as although still technically in your metropolitan borough, it seems very close to the City itself, and could compromise your identity over time. For our part, there are rumblings of a move away from Prenton Park, but at least the River Mersey provides a clear and unambiguous "boundary" between Wirral & Liverpool.

Back to Ronnie Moore - good luck to him I say - hope it works out for him at Rotherham (oh, and just to amuse you, someone on our message board wildly speculated that our chairman could enlist the help of Joe Royle to help get us out of our mess).

Probably the most sensible, eloquent posting from a Tranny.....anywhere.....ever!
