  1. Borrowing this money like the Glazers did, should be illegal.

Don't talk crap. The Glazers have pulled off yet another superb money making venture.....why should it be illegal.....Borrowing money like the Glazers did is business....it goes on every day of the week in every country in the world. How many people do you know with a mortgage?.....is that illegal too?.....because it's the closest business transaction to what has taken place at OT. Quite simply, they mortgaged ownership. If they fail to pay the interest on the debt (which clearly they haven't), they risk losing ownership to the funders. Difference at Pompey is that the people who mortgaged them were stupid enough to risk it all with no attractive assets to fall back on.......a bell that rings very close to home for Mr Corney! If the Glazers DID ever default.....which they won't.....there'd be :censored: loads of willing investors waiting to try their hand next. Football is business.....how many times have you heard the phrase "your investments can go down as well as up"......get used to it....it ain't gonna change!

  2. He should certainly be playing at a higher level but not the highest level.

His game is good but his pace will stop him from making the step up to the Premiership.

He belongs at the top of the Championship though.

If Neil Eardley and Marc Tierney can play in the Premier League, Jordan Rhodes has every right to expect to sign for Barcelona some day!

  3. G'day otid,

You are just down the road from me, I live in East Burwood.

Liverpool & Arsenal TV is on channel "One", usually early in the morning eg Arsenal TV at 2.30am on Jan 2, & Liverpool on at the same time on Jan 3. Check the green guide if you have it.

There is quite a lot of old English football on this channel in the early hours.

I search for "football" on the PVR in the coming week, and skip through the results and record the Arsenal & Liverpool TV and watch it later.

I will be up early on the 7th listening to LP, and hopefully going mental!

Found it cheers! Unless i'm reading the schedule wrong it's not on until 11th Jan.....but will be worth the wait if the result is good enough!

  4. We get Liverpool TV & Arsenal TV on free to air in Australia, but not live. The games are usually shown one or two days later, so looking forward to watching the Liverpool game, then the game against Arsenal when we meet them in the 4th round. Well I can dream can't I?

Melbourne Victory would be nice in the 5th round, Oh! err... now I AM dreaming.

How do you get free to air Liverpool TV and Arsenal TV? I'm on Foxtel and can't see either in the programme listings. Is it only available on Austar? Incidentally, whereabouts in Melbourne are you Ex_pat? I'm in Camberwell.

  5. If i remember rightly, way back in the 80's Latics launched an intitiative to bring youngsters through a soccer skills competition. The winner was guaranteed an apprenticeship with Latics. Mike Flynn was the winner and he went on to have a long and successful career in the 'middle leagues' with Latics, Preston and Stockport.

  6. To be honest if we could finish ou chances we would still be in the hunt for a play off spot. The problem has rarely been our performance or ability to create chances it's been our ability to take them. If we can keep much of the key players and get someone who can stick it in the back of the net we could well be a dark horse next season. Who knows how bad the finances are though...........

I dread to think what getting in as a dark horse may have had in store for us this season had we managed it. Unless there is a significant change in personnel (i realise Dickov has his wish list)we will be set for another season of similar ups and downs. The existing squad has a few imbalances (in particularl a lack of experience and a lack of a proven goal scorer)which unless addressed, will result in more of the same.

  7. I spent a lot of time in Dundee in the 90's and used to go regularly to Dens Park. I always thought they had a lot in common with Latics despite only competing in Dundee with United. Despite there being two teams in Dundee there as still as many Celtic and Rangers fans who make the trip to Glasgow each week and the pubs are full of armchair Rangers and Celtic fans. Never managed to understand why they built two stadia on the same street though.

  8. God I wish I lived in Australia. This country is crap and we have no future beyond this government I would love to come to the beach and play.

Don't take for granted what you have.

That's what's wrong with football fans....everyone stereotypes! Some of us don't live on the beach.........some of us have to go to work not even passing a beach....in fact, the sun doesn't even bloody shine every day. God, i wish some people would get a grip......it's hard enough adapting to a foreign lifestyle without people taking a pop as though we've got it easy over here!

  9. Derek, you've posted some good stuff on here over the years....and the odd bit of nonsense here and there......usually designed to get a rise out of someone or other....and that someone or other usually took the bait to the entertainment value of the rest of us. This post though, is heartfelt and will resonate with many. I understand your feelings, i've often felt similar feelings through the ups and downs of watching Latics. I'm not about to tell you that you should change your mind or to offer any 'brotherly advice'.......suffice to say, you're a mate....i wish you well in whatever you do in your spare time instead of watching Latics....and i miss meeting you on match days through the times when you were as passionate as you were. Those days are gone but the memories will live on. Remember the good times Derek....they were far more important to your life than the not so good. In time, you never know what may happen.....just don't ever close the door. Living on the other side of the world affords me the privilege of getting my message to you before all the nonsense starts in reply....i probably wouldn't have had the stomach to read through all that before i made my point to you.....so for my location, i'm thankful.

Good luck, i hope you really enjoy the game later today.....i wish i was there!

    Tony.

  10. and most people support Collingwood because they're the most successfull, I was roped into becoming a Richmond fan when I was down there to keep a shopkeeper happy but with exception to Geelong don't they all play at either the MCG or Docklands Stadium? Imagine if Latics, Bury and Rochdale were forced to play games at COMS?

Yep, all Melbourne teams play at MCG or Docklands (Etihad stadium as it is now), but it's not like playing at COMS because no club owns either of those stadia. Also, many of the AFL premier teams have their own stadia where they train and house admin/medical staff and where their junior sides play.

Collingwood won this year for the fist time in 20 years. Carlton and Essendon both have more titles.

  11. i'm watching Underbelly at the moment - great TV.

I thought Melbourne was way bigger than Oldham??

Melbourne IS way bigger than Oldham. The point i'm making is that the proximity to Manchester isn't the reason we don't draw in the crowds. If Melbourne can sustain 9 teams in the top flight of AFL, there's plenty of room for other well supported teams in proximity to Utd and City.

  12. what you've got to understand is due to the size of Australia, cities like Sydney and Brisbane etc don't have any surrounding towns unlike the North-West which is basically built up all the way from Saddleworth to Liverpool

You raise in interesting point in relation to where people generally say they are from 'when travelling'. I have mates from Oldham who say they are from Manchester whenever they are 'away' from home. Personally, it makes me puke.

However, I live in Camberwell (a district of Melbourne), but when anybody in the UK asks me where i live, i say Melbourne.....maybe beccause few people outside Australia would know where Camberwell is.......in many ways like few people outside England know where Oldham is.

Anyhow, to the point.....take a look at a map of Melbourne and look at the proximity of Melbourne, North Melbourne, Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond and Hawthorn. It's about half the size of Oldham and houses six AFL teams. Throw in St Kilda, Essendon, Footscray (Western Bulldogs) and Geelong....that's competition for support. Lowest average attendance amongst that lot for 2010? North Melbourne with......over 27,000.

If the product is good enough, people will turn out.

  13. Now I may have been away from Blighty for 5 years now.......but when the hell did they start calling The MCG "The G"?

It's like saying are we away next week or at "The P"

    Wankers

It's the Aussie obsession with shortening everything and anything. As i drive into work in the mornings, the traffic reports always refer to accidents where there's an 'Ambo' (Ambulance) on it's way....documentaries on TV are referred to as Doco's by presenters.....even McDonalds advertise on TV as Macca's. The Aussie rules season is populated with even more of it. TV and Radio will reel off "tonight it's the Doggies (Western Bulldogs) against the Pies (Collingwood.....nickname the magpies, shortened to pies) at the G"

A whole new language over here!

  14. Best one I have read about was back in 1987, word for word:- Latics fans endured a nightmare trip to Portsmouth for a 3-0 defeat on 11th April 1987...

"This week's Latics action (there are a few photos that I may scan in given the chance) features the supporters who endured a marathon 24 hour trip to Portsmouth game the other weekend on one of the club's Executive coaches.

The day started badly enough when the executive double deck coach taking 74 supporters to Portsmouth arrived at Boundary Park 1 1/2 hours late on the Saturday morning. However, although cold and wet after standing around for nearly 2 hours, the supporters were delighted when they got onto the coach and saw eight colour TVs , tea, coffee, stereo music etc, and said it had been worth waiting for.

The driver made excellent time on the journey down and we arrived at Portsmouth in time for the kick off. Unfortunately the team did not play to the strandard we know it is capable of and thanks to two very dubious penalty decisions the lads lost 3-0.

The return journey to Oldham started at 5.30pm and after travelling for just over an hour the double deck coach broke down on the A34 near Newbury. Fortunately just down the road over a grass verge and a five foot fence was a country pub, where the landlord agreed to let the weary travellers take liquid refreshment and rest for an hour or so.

Unfortunately the hour or so turned into 8 1/2 hours as it was not until 2.15am on the Sunday morning that two coaches arrived to take us to Hilton Park Services on the M6 where we all transferred to two more coaches that arrived back in Oldham at 6.30am in the morning, almost 24 hours after the supporters first left home..."

Don't know where you found that report Prozac.....but it's defintely almost word for word correct. The pub was a bit further away than you might imagine though. I was part of the reconnaisance party that discovered it! If anyone has the pics, i'd be delighted to see them. They were published in a home programme shortly after said event.

  15. Never heard such bollocks spouted on a thread on OWTB (and that is saying something).

Anyone who recommends AVG over Norton clearly knows nothing about the industry or subject.

Norton has been a quality product for the non-tech savy since Norton 2009. Before then, I would agree it did a lot more harm than good.

Symantec corportate software has been trusted and used by a lot of the worlds biggest compaines for a long long time. Since 2009, the team behind the corporate software now produce the retail Norton products. This is the reason Norton went from last to industry best in 1 year.

These days, a lot of the other AV companies have closed the gap with Norton for ease of use and size of footprint, but to say Norton is crap is just nonsense.

I don't work for Symantec, but I do work in the industry.

LOL@PCWorld. Where do you guys come up with this stuff?

As for why this forum generates false positives from AV software.... The advertising used on this website uses iFrames, in fact a particular type of iFrame that can be used to inject code into a users computer without their knowledge. This can be used for keyloggers, or trojans and could allow an attacker full control of your pc. Although this forum does not use any of this code, there is nothing to stop it doing so in the future, hence the AV software generates a warning.

    Hope that clears things up.

    Thanks

    a) for clearing up the issues pertaining to the site and

    B) for saving me the time to type similar content

Finally, anyone who uses AVG free....please tell me what you think the paid for version does?

  16. Up nice and early as usual on a match day, dog walked etc. with a slightly different schedule ahead of me. Going into work in Leeds for a couple of hours but away by 12noon, then meet up with an old my mate for a lift over the hill on the M62. Should arrive by 12.45ish. He's driving on to watch his beloved Man City and I'll be left to find a few watering holes before our game. I like the Rifle Range and the Greyhound so I'll be visiting those two (a least).

As for the game...well...! It takes a long time to forget all the :censored:e we've had to endure over the years at Huddersfield Town so as a result my head is trained into thinking we'll bugger this one up and come away with nothing...In reality there's massive changes taking place and a new era is threatening to open up for us so those old feeling and emotions are not exactly a fair reflection these days. In short, we have an exciting new team who on their day can hold their own in the League above never mind this one. It's all a matter of confidence and belief not just for the Town fans but for the players too. Lee Clark is forever saying 'I believe in my playaz' but now we're entering a crucial period there they have to demonstrate that faith and belief. A good professional performance and a win today will go a long way to convincing anyone who is doubtful that this is our year.

Oldham are no push overs at home obviously and the Terriers will have to work hard, match their play and have enough skill and determination to come out on top. Thankfully the wind has subsided (over here in Yorkshire at least) so the weather shouldn't be so much of a factor. I'd like to think we can nick this one but I realise it's going to a difficult task. Basically 'IF' we can play at a high tempo and take the game to Oldham, break quickly and work hard when they have the ball I'm convinced we'll be victorious. If we don't then the result could go either way!

See you all there and may the best team win!

You post way too many sensible comments to be a true Town fan
