  1. It's also a known fact that increases in police numbers and community policiing and increases prison sentences reduced crime in this country in the last 13 years, yet the Tories want fewer police and fewer in jail. People do the strangest things.

I like the Chris Rock argument. I goes something like this. Keep guns. Have as many guns as you like. But bullets are $10,000 each. Fire away.

Doesn't the US have more people in prison per % of the population than any other "western" nation? And I'm sure the main reason for that is that prisons are big business.

I prefer Eddie Izzard's line from his standup DVD "Dressed To Kill": "It's not guns that kill people, it's bullets. People should be allowed to have guns but no bullets". Maybe Chris Rock saw it too...

  2. Otherwise known as Sarah "I put a representation of Gabrielle Gifford in Cross-hairs up on a map and told people to "don't retreat, reload" after Gifford won her election, but don't blame me that she got shot in the head" feckin' Palin

Precisely. And even more annoying are the people in the media defending Palin after the shooting!! FFS, how THICK can some (American) people be????

  3. Just logged on the OAFC site to pick up on news about tonight's game and saw the item on their home page.

I've not been on the web or listened to the radio for a couple of days so this was the first I knew of it.

    Read it in total disbelief.

For once, Bill Shankly was wrong. Football isn't more important than life or death when it concerns young men like Richard.

RIP & condolences to his family, Macc Town FC and everyone close to him.

Same here, could hardly believe it when I read it.

RIP Richard and condolences to his family.

  4. 1) TV commercials (or is it adverts?) that quote 'If you phone in the next 2 minutes blah blah' are Americans really so dumb? Yes they are

    2) People that have mega-trucks so big to compensate for their small penis and then need 4 parking stalls to accomodate them

    3) Walmart

    4) Yanks

    Canada FTW :)

Agree with all of those plus:

    5) the American media justifying practically no gun control by portraying every "shooter" as a loner/loser/member of the occult.

    Oh and:

    6) Sarah feckin Palin

  5. funny you say that because, after the cup runs the year before, i remember feeling that day that there was an absolute inevitability about us going up. brilliant day.

    +1

I was there too. Now I'm the eternal pessimist when it comes to Latics but I knew there was no stopping us after that display. At the end, weren't we chanting "Marshall for England" to take the pish out of the England legend Steve Bull?!?

  6. None here in Miami.

We had a couple of inches in and around Seattle.

It was brilliant timing. Right after the WSDOT announcing that everything was in place to deal with any snow and ice this year. You can guess what happened next...

  7. Get on the right side of them once and you are sorted for the whole flight drinks wise, I find the main thing is to avoid making it too obvious that you do actually plan to get loaded or they get wary, so don't be asking them for another drink when you have half the previous one still on the go, and don't fuss them when they are serving the meals etc. Simples really.

Despite meeting doesn't of widely travelled Americans where I am I can honestly say that I have never heard one recommend, or even mention, AA, so I'd guess they aren't the best.

All American airlines (AA, United, Delta, USAirways, Continental) are :censored:e. They are all broke and haven't been able to update their cabins for years (despite goverment subsidies, bailouts etc). Though United have just started upgrading theirs.

They are tight (mean) with food, drink, checked baggage (and now carry-on baggage). Continental started the trend of flying 757s across the Atlantic, so the rest will follow. BA are expensive but still good despite the Willie Walsh cuts in service.

Avoid US airlines at all costs if you can.

  8. The proposed stadium would be in Failsworth, not far from Manchester City's ground, something which highlights another problem for Oldham. It has to fight giants such United and City for its fanbase as well as smaller clubs such as Bury. The new stadium would seat 12,000, a tacit acknowledgement from the club that it may never reach the heights it scaled in the 90s.

Ahhhhh, is that you Corporal Jones?

  9. We watched it in a local pub and met an Irish bloke from Drogheda, who claimed to have a Rovers shirt awaiting washing at home. He's just taken the tenancy of a local pub and plans to show Setanta Ireland League of Ireland matches (if necessary upstairs as a private party  ). So, subject to this weekend's result, if the championship stays on a knife-edge we may be able to watch the key games live, without the expense of going to Dublin.

All being well, this time next year we'll be on a European trip with Rovers.

My Mum was from Drogheda - I don't usually hear a lot about the place so it jumped out at me when I read your post.

We went there once in 1977 to visit all the family.

    Keep enjoying the craic Terry!

  10. Gondry has amazing vision, he also did some brilliant Demo's/Promo's for the Chemical Brothers, and Be Kind Rewind...

Playing catchup with Kermode's podcasts, and I've got up to the Inception reviews - and I agree with everything he says, Inception is a blockbuster that requires its audience to think about it - however that's not the interesting bit, Dreamscape is, or at least the parallels. He mentions Dreamscape with Dennis Quaid and Max von Sydow amongst others. For a film that's 26+ years old, it looks "watchable", I'll have to find it.

I suppose Inception is another one of those love it or hate it flicks, it doesn't matter really does it! Each to their own.

    +1

I find it amazing how those who hate it are being so perseverant in letting everyone know they hate it... and that they still hate it... and, oh by the way, they still really hate it!

  11. Ok, so I went into work last week and found a new iphone on my desk unpacked and ready to go (a mere 3GS - appreciate the thread's about the 4). Despite my initial intimidation and reservations about being on email 24/7, having got used to it I must admit it's very impressive. Query is, I've bought an album off itunes via the phone and can't find a way to get it onto my computer - is there a way?

Not sure but I think it will copy the album into a "Purchased" folder on itunes when you back up your iphone.

  12. Somebody obviously misses him.....what a wet poll !!

And yes, he did post very recently as Corporal Jones, and he also comes on here as GeorgeHarveyBonesmoker - any respect I had for him disappeared when he revealed himself as a multi. Just proved he was on the wind-up from the start...

It's neck and neck now mate - I'm not the only wet one around here, eh?

  13. While responding to the Hallworth bankruptcy thread, I mentioned the "Corp" so I was wondering if anyone on here misses his contributions?

I'm guessing most people thought he was an extreme "doom and gloomer" but, as one of his "acolytes", I wondered if there was a "silent majority" who agreed with him - maybe not 100% but maybe on some issues, especially the move to Failsworth.

Anyway, what do you think - do you miss The Corp?

  14. I bet he is on the inside, Poor fella

Maybe not* - can't bankruptcy be used as a reset button to get yourself back on your feet, rename your company, eg add "(2004)" to the name or summat and job's a good 'un?

We need for help from a financial expert on this... Zeros? Corp?

    * BTW, nothing against Hallworth - heard some good tales about him when he was "stepping out" with my mate's girlfriend's sister during the Glory Years!

  15. Toy Story 3 is going to take a huge steaming turd all over inception.

Watched Toy Story 3 in 3D last night. Fantastic finish to the story. And a nice attempt at hispanic inclusion (diversity?) by Disney...
