  1. Their is a theory in economics called the 80 20 rule you get 80% profit from 20% of your work. To me it applies to Latics. I get 80% of my good memories from about 20% of the games I watch.

    Go ParetoLatic!!

  2. Aussie Rules is the single worst sport I've ever seen live. Great day out at the MCG but awful sport. Aussies don't like you telling them that either, of that I'm certain!

You obviously watched Collingwood V Sydney. Hardly surprising it was naff.

I used to watch it on Channel 5 and thought it the most stupid game ever invented. I watched my first game live at the Gabba against Adelaide a few years ago and still wasn't overly convinced (Still having BP withdrawal symptoms at that stage. Still have them, but the commentary makes up for it). Then after being here a year and desperately seeking salvation (they have the A-League here you know, jeeze that is shocking), I went to a preliminary final at the Gabba with a couple of mates. What I witnessed was the most ferociously contested game of anything I have ever seen, from beginning to end.

There are broken bones, concussions and fist fights every game.....Being English, I am not ashamed to say that Aussie rules is probably edging football as the most exciting game on the planet for me.

What I couldnt get my head around was the fact that you can king hit a guy, break his jaw and carry on playing. What follows is legal retribution....it is awesome. There are no sendings off and no off sides.

Its like Ice hockey sans ice, and hockey sticks....and pucks.....and perspex.....and nets...OK its like AFL. There is no other game like it.

It is unique in its absurdity. That is what makes it so good.

  3. They should introduce a summer mini league or something just for something to do!

Fortunately for me, Aussie Rules is played largely in the Off - Season.....and the Lions are going remarkably well.

    GO LIONS !!!

But I am anticipating next season much more than last.....laptop wired up to the Stereo. I am thinking about leaving a couple of half empty cans in every room of the house and employing 20 guys to come in and fart, just to replicate the atmosphere!!!

  4. Because it's all to easy to come on and vent off steam by hammering away at a keyboard than to ever come up with something positve, though to find positives with yesterday would be a bit of a challenge. Here's to 6 points from Cheltenham and Orient and see how we go from there!! lol

OK, I have lived in Australia for the last 9 years. I put $15 away every week and every year I renew my season ticket.

I get just as frustrated as everyone else but after 43 years of supporting them, I bleed blue. I have seen everything. Good, bad, pathetic and fantastic. I will never, ever change or even consider walking away from them. I cannot support another football club here because it is simply not done.

The only way I could do it was to change codes. AFL and the Brisbane Lions are also now in my blood.

I have been a part of the Glory years too with the Lions and have also witnessed the downright awful, although, now, like Latics they are slowly on their way back.

Embrace every defeat, no matter how bad it is as it makes every successful moment taste all that much more sweeter.

The glory days will return, you just have to be part of every abomination... of which there will be many, otherwise you are not worthy of the blue, or for that matter, the maroon blue and gold.

One team ......Every Blade of Grass...... for life.

  5. Rummy, a picture of the crowd at Latics would have provided more than enough knockers........as for my own avatar I decided for the worded version. If I had an actual picture of baps it would cause too much confusion: 'why a picture of muffins rolls tea cakes....' lol

Hope mine is also more appropriate

  6. As an "exile" I only get to BP a few times each season, but Monday morning I was on the blower to order my tickets for Saturday, and relishing the prospect of a 400 mile round trip. And the reason is Joe. I'm old enough to have been through the good days. I'm also realistic enough to appreciate that 9 games isn't long enough to make the same impact as last time. Of course I hope we'll have the ususal temporary "bounce" from a new manager, but win, lose or draw I'll be happy just to greet BFJ back :D

I noticed "Isle of Wight" on here is making a trip, and Alan Hardy is expecting 9000 (???) .. but how many others know of people (exiles or stay away locals) who are making the effort because of Joe?

Saving for flights for Wembley !!!

However, If someone can pick me up.......drive out of Brisbane Airport and onto the Gateway Arterial......Take the Wynnum exit, turn right and head for the coast....I will be the one in the Blue Bovis shirt sitting on the Harbour wall

  7. Signed it and good luck county heard all about this and more about a month ago . The 26th MARCH will be a significant date for county and possibly up to nine other clubs. It is somewhat worse for county though as they have no tangible assets. The worst case scenario which is possible in countys case is liquidation, that would be a disaster for them and football.

Possible help is probably waiting in the wings to get the club at the lowest price, but it may be too late then.

I hope they survive I dont wish what nearly happened to us on county at all. It is also worth remembering county is run by a trust make of that what you will, but be thankfull for what we have.I could add more but I was somewhat shouted down last time I mentioned this but things are starting to seep out now .

Whatever happens good luck county hope you survive.

Signed. I have fond memories of GMR's match reports. County were a part of that institution. Long may they continue to be.

  8. For the under 20's

Yeah you did miss out big time and no there is no guarantee that Joe can do a repeat but you will no doubt be hearing the noise and the atmosphere already. You must be feeling the buzz and suddenly the talk is all about Saturday again and the return of Joe.

Both my daughters were club mascots during those glory years and in 5 years time I am hoping my grandson will run out with the team wearing his mums old Bovis kit. It makes my stomach turn to think of gates of 4 and 5 thousand at Boundary Park while Oldham bred people get on the bus to Old Trafford or Man City.

Granted most of the games I go to are away games but, despite losing my job a few weeks back, I will dig deep and catch that ferry on Saturday at about 6am and do a 500 mile round trip to welcome back Joe.

Yes ok we did lose a few games and at the end of the day we didnt have enough to stay in the top flight but we had a club that was united from supporter to boardroom. Andy barlow making the biggest mistake of his life going into the Clayton arms after we had beaten Wednesday to win the old 2nd Div - He was lifted and passed around the bar over peoples heads like a human football hahaha.

That glorious night when we thrashed West Ham 6-0 to reach the Littlewoods Cup Final - Instead of going home I satyed in Oldham for three days - I was too drunk to drive.

Rick Holdens panama hat - Jeesh he damn near slept in it but boy who cares - He could cross that ball so sweetly. Ian Marshall's toothy grin.

For me theres not a sweeter memmory than that of Andy Ritchies equaliser 4th min of injury time at Southampton that took the game to a replay and a

2-0 win - When you live on the Isle of Wight and see latics turn over Saints or Pompey then its lovely to be on the boat back to the island full of their supporters hahahaha

You want to see those days again boys, the days you missed out on? - Then be there on Saturday, be there every Saturday, tell your mates and tell them to tell their mates - IF there is a second Royal revolution then be there from the start cos last time it was one hell of a ride

That just brought tears to my eyes and makes me want to emigrate again. I can almost smell Saturday afternoon from the other side of the world !!!!

  9. In the interim, thank you to everyone that has taken part.

Quite suprised at the number (230 when I looked) which I think statistically might count as relevent!.

A good 5% of the crowd.

Though obviously we'll overlook the fact that 95% have not !

I have lived in Australia for the last 9 years and continue to buy my season ticket (38 years and counting)....does that count?

  10. On his facebook he stated "..has just had an interesting phone call", followed by "doesnt know what to do"

Further messages linking him to Hull (windass exchange mentioned), West Brom, Wolves e.t.c

    Anyone know anything?

Very gutted if he goes as Ive just bought a new home shirt with Hughes on the back, obviously along with the fact that that will almost definately shatter my 2nd place league prediction this year!!

    Can you post that link?

  11. My Australian wife cannot understand how I live in Australia and support Oldham Athletic.

From my first game at Plainmoor in 1966 (The only time dad organised the holidays), to my last game at Boundary Park in 2001, 10 days before I emigrated. It will always be with me.

Every post on this thread has consumated that very belief.

I watch the AFL and support the Brisbane lions. I wear a Latics shirt to every game.

My Lions shirt has the latics Crest on my chest in the centre. On the back, the Lions have the letters BBFFC to commemorate the merger between Fitzroy Lions and the Brisbane Bears. It now reads OABBFFC. It says Cooksey (never saw him play), has the number 4 and Keep the Faith at the Bottom.

My Qld Number Plate has 0AFC on it.

I am in the middle of having a car sticker with:

    I LIVE IN AUSTRALIA.

    I SUPPORT OLDHAM ATHLETIC.

    LATICS TILL I DIE

I had a tear in my eye as I typed.

Nope, I cant understand it either, but I remain....Latics till I die

    CARN YOU BLUES
