  1. Having lived here in Oz for the last 8 years, adjusting to the standard of football, as bad as Athletic's was when I left, has been nothing short of torture.

There had to be an alternative......do I follow the Green and Gold arrogance that is the cricket team? Like hell I do. Even watching the Queensland Bulls was bad enough. Lancashire and England forever. Do I watch the Reds Rugby Union? nope, I go for the Crusaders (NZ). Never really liked rugby League, although I do now have an interest with the Gold Coast Titans and have a season ticket as the ground is 20 minutes away from home. As a Queenslander, I do passionately go for QLD in the State of Origin series which is the only sporting event that ever really generates any passion around here.

Before the Titans arrived, it all changed when I went to my first live AFL game at the Gabba.

I had watched AFL on Channel 4 a few years before I left, and whilst I didnt really understand it, I enjoyed the cut and thrust. I picked the Brisbane Bears as my team, for obvious reasons, who then went on to Merge with Melbourne team Fitzroy to become the Brisbane Lions.

Watching it live is simply awesome. You can see all the positional play, the ball can go in any direction and you get to climb over your opponent and crash into him legally. The amount of ex pats who have taken to the game is unbelievable and the inevitable banter that has now crept into the game (not to mention the songs) as a result of the ex-pats, is generating a terrific atmosphere.

I am a full member at the Gabba and try to get to some of the MCG games too.

All physicality has now dropped out of football and the premier league is becoming boring as it is between only 4 teams. I still watch it, but no where near as much.

AFL Footy on the other hand is probably the only sport where you can king hit a guy on the pitch in the first minute, breaking your opponents jaw, and still stay on the field for the remainder of the game.

Awesome. I am afraid of the response I will get with this next statement, but AFL, in my opinion, is the greatest game in the world.

Come on guys, let me know who your teams are.

    ABC (Anyone but Collingwood)

    GO LIONS

  2. Can't blame Hughes, doing his job, so how about

If Graeme Sharp hadn't missed that absolute sitter minutes earlier to put us 2-0 and finish them off?

Mark Hughes's goal was one of the greatest goals I have ever been priveledged to witness live.

Sharp had 4 yards to aim at virtually standing on the goal line and missed. If the lazy tw@ had put it away, we would have had an extra 2 or 3 years in the premiership and the FA Cup in the trophy cabinet.

If his name was Gordon Smith, his infamy would be even more legendary.

I have never forgiven him for that. Subsequent efforts as both a player and more so as a manager did little to lift his credibility in my eyes.

Heres another one. If Graeme Sharp's pen had run out of ink............

  3. “I hear various reasons for people not coming to games but, to be honest, I think most of them are easy excuses."

Bloody hell, is my wife Simon Corney in disguise???? She tells me all my reasons are excuses too.

Easy excuse or not, I reckon living in QLD has made it pretty tough to get to a game recently. Still, I wear my Oldham top to every Brisbane Lions game at the Gabba with unequalled pride.

  4. I have no idea how genuine this is, but having recently spoken to a couple of friends in the UK over the phone, neither of whom know each other but both of which are members of Saddleworth Golf club, it is safe to assume that the rumour originates there, so I wonder if you guys could shed any light on it...........

We all know that Scholesy has made no secret of the fact that he wants to end his career at BP. However, the rumour going round the golf club is that that could be sooner rather than later.

Apparently, it is said that he wants two good years at BP, but he also wants to retire at 36.

I was pretty average at maths at school, so forgive me if I stuff this up.

Scholes will be 34 in November and his contract at United doesn't run out until the end of next season, which puts him at 34 2/3. Added to that, United are preparing a one year extension to his existing contract which would leave him at 35 2/3.

If he wants to retire at 36, then neither 36-34 2/3 or 36-35 2/3 equates to two good years at BP.

Either the rumour is completely without substance or the ninja was even worse than me at maths.

    Over to the professors..................

PS. If he can state to the world's press that Frankie Frankie is his favourite player, dont bet against him leaving the reds and lining up in our midfield with a Champions League/ Premiership double under his belt

  5. My dad has watched LeFondre a few times at Spotland and rates him, although he did say that Chris Dagnall's hat trick against Rotherham last month, was something special. It was his first game back after a serious injury and he did it all in 20 minutes after coming on as a sub. Personally, I reckon you have to be an exotic player to warrant an exotic name, so I would go with the daggy one !!!

  6. Was 1ceman on the old official site until my employers blocked my access......Then when I got it back, the forum vanished

New name, new server, still an idiot exile in Queensland
