  1. And I think there lies one major problem at the club. Those who have been brought up on a higher level of football have deserted the club, you can tell by the lack of groups of blokes in their 30s and 40s which follow us. There is a lot of young teenage fans and old fans (who will go week in week out regardless).

If we cant get these people to come back then the club needs to put all its efforts into attracting a new generation of fans who will get behind the team at this level and put money into the club.

  2. I'd put the phone down on them. I hate sales phone calls.

Ringing people up begging them to renew might class as marketing to some, for me it sounds like a charity appeal.

While yes it is sales and cold calling, it is not as if the club is ringing up people trying to flog them products they are not interested in like a double glazing firm.

They are ringing people who have had season tickets at Oldham (so obviously have at somepoint been very loyal and interested in Latics) and are finding out why they have not renewed and if they would be interested in a half season ticket offer.

I hadnt heard of the half season ticket off before and I think my dad and bro may take it up so thumbs up to the club from me.

  3. Tough yes but to write them off as unlikely to get anything from them what is the point in the first place with that attitude?? They aren't United, barcelona or Real Madrid and to come out of all 3 games without mustering a goal and not having much control over a game (granted colchester when they went a man down)...

Should we just give the top 6 teams 6 points because they are financially better off than us? What has stopped us beating these teams in the past..?

I would argue that Leeds Norwich Southampton are much better teams than the others in this division.

After the Southampton Norwich game both managers said there was enough quality for the Championship on the pitch. To no get anything from these games with our current squad is not as bad as it seems. There is still time to pick up points off these and others though with not even half a season gone.

We shouldnt give the top 6 teams 6 points because they are financially better off than us. But we shouldnt be so shocked if we get beat by these teams when they get themselves in order like they have done.

We have had some great results against the top teams in recent seasons. Maybe they were taking a team like Oldham lightly and now they realise that they cant. Football is not all black and white.

  4. http://www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk/news-fea.../raining-points

Colchester ? Huddersfield ? Can we really expect to not compete with such Giants ?

One of the comments on the page says he remembers Shez seeing these games a cup finals... I have to agree, pretty negative view points Mr Penney...

Did we even set out to get points against Leeds / Norwich or was the aim always damage limitation ?

Come on mate Hudds have spent :censored: loads of cash and Colchester have been in the Championship for a couple of seasons recently, I would expect them to now have a similar budget and fanbase to ours now.

If you were using Colchester as a yardstick to show how badly this club has been mismanaged since the early 90s I would be right behind you but to use it against the current regime is way off the mark IMO.

  5. Sorry if someone else has mentioned this, but I just got a call from someone at the club (actually, must be a marketing/PR agency as she had a scouse accent) contacting me because I was a lapsed ST holder and just asking me a few Q's on why. She took my email address down in the process so probably compiling a bigger email database or something.

In the past plenty of crap has been thrown at the club (myself included) on lack of marketing etc., and I know it's 5 years too late or whatever but IMO it's good the club are starting to appear more proactive about it. New marking guru is probably making his marks as we speak!

Anyone else had these calls today?

Haha yeah, it was bizarre the area code is the same as where I grew up so thought it must have been a family member or mate ringing me from a house phone and it was Oldham Athletic with a scouse accent :)

  6. How DARE he feed us this :censored:e week in week out. He has turned our team into a relegation outfit and I am not having it.

John Sheridan, who is supposed to be a "poor manager who lost the dressing room" (so some people say) managed to have us in the top 6 consistantly on a ridiculously low budget.

Dave Penney, who is supposed to be a "quality manager" (so some people say) has managed to turn us into a side which looks sure to go down IMO on an equally low budget.

I'm not saying sack Penney and I'm not saying bring Sheridan back (he wouldn't come back anyway) but I definatly do NOT want to see this club in the 4th Division of English football...it's not where we belong and how dare any manager take us there.

Feel free to have a pop at me but I don't like where the club is being taken and I feel as though theres cock all I can do about it without winning the lottery.

Is this the same John Sheridan whose team was in freefall leaving Royle and Penney both struggling to pick up the pieces. Make no mistake if you take away the fortuitous good start last season we would have been in the mire. Just take a look at results at the end of last season you cannot just blame Penney for this team turning into relegation fodder.

Out of todays starting line up, Smalley, Black, Lomax, Gregan, Stephens and Whitaker were all put under contract before Penney has come near the club.

  7. That's why he could never establish himself at Birmingham and Grayyson and Leeds fans regard him as a back up player. yes he's had a good 20 minutes against us in the cup game and was allowed the space to play the other night. Close him down and harass him for 90 minutes and he doesn't want to know. I still reckon the first month he was here on loan in 2004 is the best football he will play in his career EVER. I gree with Lags, little tosser who would cause trouble in an empty house. Next time Leeds are live if he's playing watch how 'awesome' he looks against a decent team. KK will be the one hiding.

So you wouldnt have him in our team then over Whits, Furman, Worthington or any of the other :censored:e who makes up our Centre Midfield? Why so bitter? It cant be because you think he is a tosser, the majority of professional footballers are.

  8. I will never understand that as long as I live

    Me neither.

It always makes me laugh the amount of people who come out saying how :censored: some of these players are when they leave or how bitter some people are when players move on to bigger and better things. Wellens, Kilkenny, Eardley, Killen, Porter and no doubt Taylor in the future have often been labelled not good enough on here and thats to name just a few.

  9. I think we should just give up.

Lets all stop going to the match thereby sending the club into liquidation, then TTA can sell all of BP without the inconvienience of having to sort a football club out and have done with it. From what is being said on here it seems this is inevitable, so lets not prolong the agony and have it all done and dusted by the summer.

Oh and lets not wait for the facts, they just get in the way of a good doom and gloom story.

    Lose the faith!!!!!

Haha I couldnt think of a better slogan for our club at the moment

As for the ground, I couldnt care less until I actually see what has been planned and even then if it doesnt even meet my expectations I know its still going to be a million times better than BP.

  10. For me Whits was the problem last season and its the same again this season. When the going gets tough he doesnt go looking for the ball or put in the challenges. He can look very good when given space or against weaker opposition but I just dont think he is good enough to be playing week in week out at this level. You do have to wonder how bad the reserve midfielders must be though if he is keeping them out of the team.

Quick edit to address the OP. I don't think Furman has anywhere near lived up to the hype, I am prepared to give him time but we will have to see. Good central midfielders are hard to get hold of at this level though. I think we have been spoiled in recent years with Wellens and Kilkenny and further back players like the Sheridans and Murray, Duxbury.

  11. It's all good and well saying "give Penney time". We haven't got any time - this club needs a serious injection of enthusiasm absolutely immediately.

I can see us finally sacking Penney come March in a desperate attempt to maintain our 3rd division status. I'd rather we cut our losses now.

Bring back Stitch and give him £10k a week to sign some proper footballers!! :ranting:

Then sack Stitch when nothing improves I take it. Then maybe give Dux a go...

Not having a go, but to keep sacking managers is just ridiculous.

  12. Daz I think your missing the one major factor in all of this. LEEDS ARE A VERY GOOD SIDE. No matter who or what people at our club did differently this was not going to change. I would hazard a guess with no Leeds fans there they would still be favourites and would have probably won. Just because we lost doesnt mean the players werent motivated or trying.

  13. What I found odd last season was that Shez seemed to have decided that COG, Davies and Hughes and probably Alessandra too were going to be the main strikers. He even started COG and Davies in the first couple of games and then by Christmas 2 of them had been out on loan already. Did he really misjudge their abilities that much or is it problems behind the scenes. I cant think that there are too many clubs out there who get things that wrong.

  14. And started??? Enough said...

Darren Byfield's :censored: too apparently according to our lot but enjoyed assisting in dicking us on Tuesday...we're good at this game...Heffernan....booooooo! You've not pulled on your shirt yet...but fecking boooooo!

I can see Heffernan being classed as :censored: in a couple of weeks on here I really can.

  15. He's got a decent scoring record against crap defences. The post somewhere above about there not being a big gap between L1 and L2...last year was an anomaly with two well financed sides coming up and ending up in the top six...look at the sides that have come up this year - 14th, 15th, 18th and 22nd, and I'd be surprised if more than one finished any higher than that.

He's playing against rubbish and scoring a few, but he was bobbins for us and got shipped out, and was bobbins for Stockport, Stuart McCall didn't even want him in his 16 and he did an excellent job warming Bury's bench. I'll stand to be corrected but IIRC his goalscoring record for Rotherham was hardly top notch (and again, against crap defences).

He's the kind of player you'd have in if you were allowed 12 players, because he can hold the ball up well. But I'm sorry, in a striker (especially in a team struggling for goals), you need someone who can score at this level. COG has shown so far that he can't. Would rather we cut our losses than waste time giving him another shot.

And as for the stuff about managers not always being right...well yes, but they know a damn sight more than we do. They see the player every day (not just once or twice for the reserves), and know what they're capable of. If John Sheridan, Dave Penney, Jim Gannon, Stuart McCall and Alan Knill think he's not up to much, but Keith Hill thinks he is, then let him have him. If it's a mistake in the end and he comes good then fine, but I know whose side the odds favour.

Absence certainly seems to make the heart grow fonder for Latics fans. We had the same thing with Craig Davies last year, who looked like he couldn't score in a brothel...went away and suddenly everyone wanted him back. He came back and was just as toothless (poor choice of phrase ) as he was before.

Not saying we didnt do the right thing but didnt Davies go out on loan to another team in our division and score 6 in 7? I an see why people may have wanted him back..then when he came back by all accounts he looked sharp in his 2 sub appearances then got shipped off to Brighton?

    Its a funny game football.

I'd wager its Davies attitude rather than footballing ability or goal scoring which has led to him being shown the door at numerous clubs.

  16. I agree with some of what you say but for me, having a decent touch is something you either have or you don't. Don't get me wrong, you can work hard and improve but you'll always lag behind someone who's got 'it'.

At 23, I don't see that there's much improvement to come in that area of his game.

Ive never thought his touch was that bad, more his ability to get that "half a yard" to get a shot in at our level, which means he isnt really that threatening.

He has shown glimpses IMO that he could be a good targetman but then he has hardly played. So I suppose that could indicate that he isnt up to it.

A strange one COG I would give him a chance however.

  17. Let's wait and see before declaring that this is a good move shall we?

Boundary Park is like a graveyard for strikers sometimes regardless of their previous history.

If he scores loads of goals, it will be a good move. If he doesn't it will not be a good move.

I hope it ends up being a good move.

If he doesnt score in his first game no doubt he will be classed as :censored:!

Please give him a chance people:)
