  1. Think Smith is one of a very rare breed that will actually do better at a higher level.

League one and 2 are pretty rough and somebody like Smith just gets battered about and wins nowt.

At a higher level many of the challenges are deemed fouls so he either gets a free kick or wins the header.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he can do a Crouch job for somebody (even Stock maybe interested )

On the contrary, his complete lack of ability will be shown up even further at a higher level. He's not even particularly great in the air. He has improved this season, but he's probably still not even good enough for our level.

  2. Well the straw poll that they ran was rubbish because we have been taking a young Asian lad with us for the last two seasons. Reporting like that is very poor because we all know that most of the people of Oldham wont watch Latics until they get some success.

Exactly, it's not just the Asian community who are put off watching the club. Oldham has a population of 103,000 (according to Wikipedia) and yet we average 3000, many of whom travel from neighbouring town's and cities as well as further afield. People generally just aren't prepared to pay a considerable amount of money to watch a poor 3rd tier side. We won't start attracting new fans of any creed or colour until that changes.

  3. This was different.

It wasn't just the new manager effect, they were visibly doing the things he said he'd have them doing - spinning defenders, high tempo, attacking with pace.

And they mixed it up with the odd long ball which sounds so simplistic but seemed to make us a lot less predictable.

    Gutted I can't make Shrewsbury

    That's encouraging to hear.

  4. Do you honestly think appointing a Phil Brown (failed at Preston - Relegated) or a Warnock (failed at Oldham - relegated) would guarantee survival? If so then fair enough.

I will repeat the question, Name the last experienced manager to have ANY success at oafc?

As much as I dislike the man, Ronnie Moore saved us from a similar situation did he not?

Also, I never said it'd guarantee survival. But I'd be more optimistic than I am with a complete rookie in charge.

  5. On the basis of the comments on this thread none of you would have appointed Royle and you would all still welcome Warnock. It beggars belief.

Right or wrong we appear to have gone for young and hungry over experience.

For those clamouring for experience, did Warnock save us (and with a fair bit of cash to spend by our standards)? Did Redknap keep up Southampton? The answer is no. Experience isn't everything and I would prefer this appointment to Phil Brown whose record with struggling sides at Derby and Preston was poor.

Lee Johnson was a warrior in his games for Bristol against us and the type of player with some fire in his belly a fire that yesterdays gutless 1st half showed we are missing now. He worked his socks off fo his team and if he is appointed tomorrow I expect he will bring that ethic with him.

Young and hungry every time for me, A clean sheet and no baggage of failure. I don't want another Penny, another Warnock another Moore another Wadsworth. The only managers in my 45+ years to have any success whatsoever have been young and hungry and I say we stuck with that. The odds as far as oafc are concerned say that works better than experience.

Therefore give me another Frizz, another Royle, another Dowie or another Shez. They are far more likely to bring us success.

Do you honestly think bringing someone in with literally zero managerial or coaching experience, who will inevitably need a few weeks to get accustomed to the role is a wise appointment for a team in freefall and in serious danger of relegation? If we'd been mid-table and out of danger, fine. Or if we'd appointed him over the summer and allowed him time to get used to the role, fine. But to throw him into the firing line now is, in my opinion, complete madness.

  6. If what the players put on twitter, facebook etc etc pisses people off so much then maybe you should follow someone else.

I know we live in an age of social media but to actually follow a league 1 footballer on twitter by choice and then complain about what that player tweets is :censored:in pathetic!

I think it's the fact that they talk a good game on social media but then put in the same old spineless performances on the pitch that pisses people off, and to be honest I can see their point.
