  1. Tuesday February 20th, 2001...evening kick off against Reading.

It was effing freezing and the consensus opinion was for the game to be called off. The club, however, pulled out all the stops to get the game on and it went ahead. The pitch was like a skating rink, with players treading warily and not committing themselves to anything stupid.

The P.A. announced proudly over the system that the club had practically worked miracles to get the pitch playable, whilst over games around and about had been postponed. As fans, we were chuffed to have a game to go to...we lost 0-2.

Admittedly, the pitch was in a better condition (and so was the squad).

  2. so O'Grady would have been the difference between survival and relegation?

granted he didn't get a proper chance here but he played plenty for Stockport in this league and did nothing there either - and that's a side where inexperienced players like Oli Johnson (?) and Baker have banged them in/got big moves.

people talk about being worried about the way the club's being run - i'd be VERY worried if we hadn't taken £50k profit on a bad signing.

The difference for O'Grady at 'Dale is that he has a manager who believes in him and a decent team to to play in.

Stark contrast to what he would/did have at Latics.

  3. I think Penney will be here until the end of the season, purely on the basis that I fail to see where the club will find the £££ to sack him

It's League two for us, then and even if he does go, the new man would have to turn on the miracle juice.

Our fate, it would seem, is all but sealed.

Good post from the Insider, but I don't think he told us anything we didn't already know.

  4. Jesus, if DP signed Fernando Torres people would still moan and call it a defensive move!

So, what, exactly, has he done so far to remedy the striker crisis...apart from a brief cameo from Heffernan?

From the 'Chron article on asked if he would like to see more fans through the turnstile.

Yes, only if they get behind the team

I hope that was a misquote, as I can't see the directors feeling the same way.

  5. Spot on that, one of the things that got me hooked was the camaraderie between Latics fans, we really were a Band of Brothers in those days. Before the 'pinch me' years the team often struggled, but there was never any real cynicism from the fans towards the team or the club.

These days the opposite is true and if I'm honest I think this board has a lot to do with it, we are constantly turning on each other and the club, and this spiral of negagtivity and doom and gloom is becoming a self fullfilling prophecy. Yes we're crap, yes none of us wants to go to Failsworth, but the question is do we want an Oldham Athletic or not? I know I do; so as I've done before I'll weather the storm and keep the faith that the good times will return.

May I suggest a period of exile from this board may help some, I know it has me.

You do have a point, there.

The advent of the Internet and the Information Highway has given fans the opportunity to be closer to the club and each other. The flip side is that the club has to become an oracle of information. Fast, precise, honest and up-to-date...to the minute...to satisfy the the thirst for information that the fans' new found closeness requires.

Message boards have become a soapbox for all fans alike, any club with an iota of sense will be monitoring the most popular forum connected to the relative football club. Whether or not they act upon the opinions of the fans is, in itself, debatable.

The idea of abstinence from the message board is sensible, the urge to come on the board is, unfortunately, irresistible.

  6. To be honest i dont even think its just the product on the pitch which is turning people away, but the whole disillusionment with the way things are at the club. Yes the football is utter tripe but there is just a stale feeling around BP nowadays and its lost what remaining atmosphere there was. When i first started going to Latics in the late 80's early 90's it always used to feel like a really friendly club and it was a nice place to be. Now it just seems as if most people turn up as a kind of duty they feel bound by. The only way to change that is to start producing something on the pitch to get people back, but after the crap ive seen this season I cant see that happening anytime soon.

Couldn't agree more...BP is a now a run down shack of a ground, with a product on the pitch to match it.

To me, the last time it felt almost as bad as this was when Graeme Sharp was in charge and relegation to the second division was imminent.

In contrast, every match in the premiership felt like a cup final...sitting in the Rochdale Road end next to the away fans was brilliant.

I've never been this depressed about the Latics, the feeling of an impending crisis just won't go away.

  7. He's also a bit contradictory.

Latics manager Dave Penney has confirmed he is trying to bring a striker to end his team's goal famine.

He revealed he has been working tirelessly this week but, as yet, has met with no success with his inquiries.

"We have been on the telephone all week to try and add some players to the squad, and it is still ongoing," he explained....

.... In a further move to solve the team's scoring problems, Latics have this week been giving trials to a couple of strikers.

Is this the sort of breaking news we have to be content with now?

Something like that would be put on a different forum if it was posted on here.

Well, there is nothing happening at our club...is there?

It's a bit 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'. The official site has to be seen to be doing something in the wake of Ackey's departure...least they could do, is put up a report of the Reserve's match. Then again, there probably wasn't anybody there to watch it.

  9. TBH if this guy is taken on it will just typify the problem Penney has in his inability to see what the team needs.

He is a left back, we already have Jacobsen fit and playing there with Black as back up, we do not need another left back.

What we are desperate for is a striker i.e. someone who can score goals and a creative midfield player i.e someone who can pick a pass and make a goal.

Bringing in the wrong players in the wrong positions just adds extra to the wage bill with no benefit to the team.

It's a 'done deal', then.

  10. OTID - that is one of the best posts I have read in a long while and perfectly sums up the feeling of apathy that is rife concerning the club at this moment in time.

Dereliction, devoid of the match-day experience, devoid of emotion, devoid of direction and almost devoid of fans.

Who in their right state of mind wants to keep paying £20+ to watch dross in a run down stadium, with a dismal lack of atmosphere?

The board will do nothing...the land is their saviour...Boundary Park is in peril of dying as a sporting venue. The entire club may go the same way.

  11. This should be enough to convince Corney & Co that drastic action is needed.......whether that's the sacking of Penney, a transfer splash, or whatever, something clearly needs to change, and quickly!!!!

Can't see any drastic action being taken - I honestly think they've lost all heart.
