Diego_Sideburns
It was a good afternoon’s entertainment down at the Pirelli Stadium. The Brewers’ fans gave Hughes all the usual abuse which he’s heard many times before. A Notts County fan had told me in the pub that when they played Forest pre-season, many of the Forest fans wore white T-shirts with black arrows drawn on them. The Brewers paid the price for missing first half chances and, after bringing the score back to 1-1, they were outclassed in the second half. Lee Hughes gave a master class in the striker’s art and in how to have the last laugh over his abusers. Hughes’ trademark celebration in front of the Albion fans after his first goal just before half-time to give County a 2-1 lead. Hughes went on to get a hat-trick in an eight minute period either side of half-time, taking him to 18 goals for the season. He took the opportunity when defending a corner at the Burton end, to grin and hold up three fingers to the home fans. Hughes was booked when he shot after the whistle had been blown for offside. He had already won one penalty before taking another tumble in the area. The reaction of the Albion players claiming that Hughes had dived, led to two of them being booked. While all that was going on, Hughes went over to the Albion fans on the far side pointing to the name on te back of his shirt and holding up three fingers. Soon afterwards, as Hughes’ number went up on the substitute board, he walked over to the wing, as far away as possible from the Fourth Official. As he was being substituted he was booed by the home fans, and he waved to them, on thee sides of the stadium, as he took ages to leave the pitch. Burton had the chance to reduce the arrears to two but Kabba's penalty was saved. Casper Schmeichel off his line as Steve Kabba is about to take his penalty It was Schmeichel's fourth penalty save of the season Notts won 4-1 but it could have been at least seven if it has not been for Krysiak, the Brewers’ Polish keeper on loan from Birmingham, who made three world-class saves, the final one being applauded by Schmeichel from the other end. If only Hughes still played for us.......
Diego_Sideburns
BBC TV video highlights of the Notts County game, but alas excluding the Burton keeper’s world-class saves: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/e...v_3/8434191.stm The rarely read Burton Mail said: Hughes, who was booked for time wasting, was lucky not to be sent off on 75 minutes when he went down in the penalty area under a challenge from substitute Guy Branston which was not deemed a foul. He also took great joy in winding up the home supporters, particularly when he was substituted immediately after the ‘diving’ incident. Peschisolido had no qualms about the penalty Hughes won, but felt the striker should have been sent off, and also thought his players gave him too much space to exploit. “You give him an opportunity, you give him space and he’s going to punish you, and we gave him far too much space today,” said the Brewers boss. “He’s a good player. It just shows when you’ve got a player of his quality, he can change the game himself, and he certainly did that today, but we allowed him too. “We gave him way too much time on the ball, we didn’t close down the service — we didn’t stop the service in the middle of the park. “It was a penalty. He’s pulled it round the keeper and the keeper’s brought him down.” On the Branston challenge, Peschisolido said: “According to the rules, what I understand, if it’s not a penalty then obviously he has dived, so he should have been sent off, but we’re grasping at straws a bit here. “He’s a good player, the lad, but he does some stupid things, even winding up the supporters at the end there’s no need for that. “He’s such a good player he should really behave himself better.” That's him in a nutshell! Diego_Sideburns
Last night I went to watch Shez’s League Two leaders play their bogey team, the Brewers. The Spireites in fancy dress, who had been singing loudly in the local Wetherspoon’s before the match, were silenced after five minutes when the Brewers took the lead. Shez’s boys, including Latics rejects (Dean Holden, Mark Allott, Danny Whitaker, Craig Davies and Deane Smalley) never produced a shot on target and Burton’s 1-0 win was achieved very comfortably. The only scare was in the final minute of stoppage time when somehow the ball ended up past the Burton keeper, only for Smalley to stab it wide. The home fans’ chant of "dirty northern b******s" against their Derbyshire rivals from up the road was amusing, and Burton-born Craig Davies was subjected throughout his hour on the pitch to the chants of "w****r" and "Stapenhill reject", the latter being a reference to his very young days when he played for a local amateur club. With three draws and a defeat in the last four games it looks like Shez is experiencing his usual blip at this time of year. Off to 'uddersfield now to get a prime parking spot outside the Gas Club. opinions4u
Perhaps we could groundshare with Burton! Out of interest, how did Davies play? I don't think he's scored this year. And Smalley? Is he a prospect for next season (asusming we have one).

It had never crossed my mind, but what an excellent idea. On that showing, both Davies and Smalley are worse than what we've got. Neither looked as good as Kelly in his brief appearances.
