Olham Athletic 1899 - 1988 Book

Oldham 1899 - 1988

I was in the library and spied this old book, started reading it and it seems well worth a read.

Even in the introductory chapters there's loads of descriptions about how the team came about, how we rised fast, then plummeted and almost dissapeared then came back, written in a really informative way with whole chapters of stats (which I love) including a summary of every player to have played for the team till that point including some pretty funny photos (inc Palmer, Iriwin and Goram amusingly).

It's reallu interesting reading about the first 15 years or so of the club and how there are completely missing records of some games, and how things were just as corperate back then in their own way.

Anyone else read this?

Read it 20 years ago when it came out mate!

Seriously though, Dykes is a decent read and his two subsequent volumes of Latics Lads and Who's who have both built on the A-Z from his complete record. Beckett's books are superb though if you've never read Team From a Town of Chimneys, Keeping the Dream Alive or Pine Villa and Oldham Athletic a 100 year journey you really have missed out. Oh and First Division Days is a good read too. I have copies of all of them, thus adding to my encyclopaedic knowledge of OAFC. I think I've got every book ever written. Including a rare one from the 40s/50s detailing the clubs first 50 years.

Apparantly Dykes and Beckett are working in collaboration on the highs of OAFC from 1996/1997 - 2008.

Didnt take them long to compile and not may pages ........more of a handout than a book

Some copies of BtB from those days would be more than adequate!

Was some great stuff in them. Shame it had to finish up in the end.
