2009/10 Opening Day Preview

Recommended Posts

Revamped Oldham Athletic face an interesting start to the season with an opening day trip to near neighbours Bury. Latics faced a summer clearout, with out-of-contract striker Lee Hughes moving to play-off runners-up Leeds United to replace striker Jermaine Beckford, who moved to Premier League Sheffield United for £2m.

The Boundary Park club though fought well to hold on to highly-rated winger Chris Taylor, who new manager Jim Gannon referred to as 'the best ginger outside of the Premier League, except for Dean Lewington'. They enter the new campaign with a mix of old faces and new - in have come Alan Lee and Fabian Yantorno, and Gannon has brought back club legend Andy Liddell and appointed him as captain. Gannon spoke of the veteran right winger, 'he takes a mean penalty and we're hoping he can point the way to promotion this season'. Latics will of course be missing central defender Sean Gregan through a serious bout of indigestion, and Neal Eardley, who was admitted to a psychiatric ward in June after suffering from a breakdown precipitated by two years of abuse from his own fans.

Matty Wolfenden misses out with a hamstring injury, though Guy Branston is expected to make his debut in his second spell with the club. Nobody knows what has happened with Dale Stephens.
