Butcher Died From Heart Condition

Recommended Posts

Mrs Butcher said her husband had complained of chest pains on and off for about three years.

"Every now and then he would clutch his chest and then the pain would disappear," she said.

"He would say 'I'm so fit and healthy, it's fine' and he would dismiss it really."

What is it with men and not going to the bloody doctors :(

EDIT: Oh I really should read everything first...

He underwent a series of heart tests in Lincoln in November 2009, after collapsing after a night out when he had only drunk three bottles of beer.

Surprised the doctors didn't spot it :(

It varies, I'm surprised that a professional footballer had such a condition diagnosed at PM, especially with the prevalence of heart monitors in training these days. I'm not that surprised that in a 30-60 minute appointment a cardiologist didn't spot it after a series of tests.

He had a bout of "flu" at the time of his death IIRC in which case that won't have helped.

i would encourage anyone who has persistant chest pains/twinges to get themselves sorted out,` and to keep pushing the doctors to do more deeper checks. last year i was suffering with pains/twinges and they put it down to panic attacks and stress. but i wasnt happy with that and after further checks i was diagnosed with irregular heart beat due to electrical pulses. if they hadnt of caught chances were i would of had a stroke or some other heart problems

get yourselves sorted.

it was a shame RB died so young especially as he could of been treated for it RIP

As i understand it (and i'm not a doctor so i could be wrong) the rarer heart conditions that tend to cause sudden death in young people quite often don't show up on standard heart tests like ECGs and echocardiograms. Quite often the only way of diagnosing them is through provocation studies, where you give someone drugs under strict monitoring to see if it triggers an abnormal rhythm. Unfortunately quite often the only clue that someone might have a problem is if someone in their family dies suddenly. It must be awful for Richard Butcher's wife, wondering 'what if', but it's possible that even if he had gone to the doctors with his chest pains it might not have been diagnosed. There probably isn't anything the coroner could say that would make it any easier for his family, but i hope it gives them some kind of closure.
