Personally I prefer applause for an old codger who's had his day and silence for somebody who has perhaps departed a little younger than expected. I had a horrible feeling that a small number of idiots could have embarrassed us if it had been a silence. I've no doubt that 99% would have observed it perfectly but when there are so many going you'll always get a few people who don't know how to behave after a belly full of lager.
