Repeatedly dislocating your shoulder has got to do further damage to ligaments, etc. Might as well get him to sign a contract then get him in for his op, so he's fully ready for pre-season training. He'll be a big loss but hopefully his long-term future is at BP and there will be a few end-of-season games for him to come back for.
