Stevie_J Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 The OWTB Player of the Season 2014/15 Everyone got their black ties on (over their karrimor fleece jackets)...? Then we'll begin. Here's the rundown to the 2014/15 OWTB Player of the Season. This award is based upon the Man of the Match polls on OWTB throughout the season, covering all competitions. Using the same system as the last two years, points are awarded for each game as follows: MotM: 4pts; 2nd: 2pts; and 3rd: 1pt. For players tied at the end of the season, the number of MotM awards would dictate who finishes first, but this did not come into play.Last season's award was won by James Wesolowski, who departed shortly after (second, third and fourth were Korey Smith, James Tarkowski and Jonson Clarke-Harris, also now plying their trade elsewhere).First of all, let's run through the Player of the Month winners for the season, not least bcause I failed to keep up with this and never posted the PotM threads for January to April. The monthly awards went like this:August - Carl WinchesterSeptember - George ElokobiOctober - Mike JonesNovember - Daniel JohnsonDecember - Joseph MillsJanuary - Liam KellyFebruary - Carl WinchesterMarch - Mike JonesApril - Joel ColemanNobody dominated the monthly award, although Mike Jones and Carl Winchester each managed to claim it twice, so this doesn't give too much away with respect to the end of season award. Without further ado, the top 5 countdown looks like this:5. Danny Philliskirk 24pts (3 MotM awards) (0.49pts/appearance)Fifth in the running last year and fifth again this time around. It's been a difficult campaign for Danny Philliskirk; whilst he's picked a few MotM awards and sufficient points to sneak into the top five, he's taken a lot of citicism for his performances this season. In truth, he was consistently picked when many a manager might have taken him out of the firing line during a huge dip in form. Here's hoping he can develop and improve to put himself back in the running again next season.4. Joseph Mills 32pts (6 MotM awards) (0.89pts/appearance)Having appeared for Latics on loan from Burnley previously, Mills was well known to Athletic fans when he signed a permanent deal ahead of this season. More MotM awards and points per appearance than the man one place ahead of him, the attacking full-back would almost certainly have been in the running to take the award had he not been troubled by injuries.3. Liam Kelly 33pts (4 MotM awards) (0.77pts/appearance)Scotsman Liam Kelly, who arrived at Oldham last summer from Bristol City, had a slow start with many fans unconvinced that he warranted his place in the team. He won people over as his performances improved and was Latics's stand-out player in the middle section of the season. Like Mills, struggled with injuries in the latter stages of the campaign.2. Carl Winchester 47pts (8 MotM awards) (1.00pts/appearance)No so long ago there were concerns that Carl Winchester might not fulfil his potential at Latics, as he struggled to secure a regular starting berth in the first team. This season, however, "Winiesta" has emerged as a key player whose technical ability is superior to most at this level. He's also scored some great goals. It seems unlikely that he has escaped the attention of other clubs and how long he'll remain at Boundary Park remains to be seen. And the winner is...1. MIKE JONES 57 pts (8 MotM awards) (1.16pts/appearance) Not too much in it between first and second, with both Jones and Winchester each taking MotM eight times and Player of the Month twice but Jones who has chipped in with seven goals this season, has edged out his fellow midfielder. If he's still here at the beginning of next season, he'll be the first player in years to take this award and stick around, after previously winners Wesolowski, Lee Croft and Kieran Lee all left the club shortly after. Congratulations to Mike Jones, OWTB's Player of the Season for 2014/15. Finally, a special mention for young goalkeeper, Joel Coleman, who in 11 appearances picked up 14 points (1.27 pts/appearance) and three MotM awards. Hopefully, we've found ourselves a homegrown No. 1 for next season. Quote
BP1960 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Got that one right, my prediction for player of the season on owtb after watching him in the pre season games. Hope any new player signed by the manager has similar success as Jones. Quote
MAC0AFC Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Good little write up Stevie, how many of the 5 do you think will be wearing blue next season? My guess is 2 maybe 3. Quote
