  1. I don't quite get this admiration that some Oldham fans have for Hill at Dale.

They are bottom of the league and have been relegated from lg1 on more than one occasion.

If any Oldham manager past or present had his current record they would be baying for his blood.

Surely the cost of a player and the expectations for that player are intertwined..?

The fee paid for a player? Yes (if you know it). A guess of what he might be earning elsewhere and how much we are paying of that? No.

He's played something like 10 games in 2 years and had a bad injury? That and our current circumstances should be used to judge him. Could probably do better (same for every player) but getting better (same for every player)

Why wouldn't he be near us? We’ve thrown a bit of money about lately and Preston are 7th(?) in the Championship.

Given a Championship side signed him for a fee from another Championship club, and he’s on a 3 year-deal, you’ve got to think he’s on £4K+ a week at least. How much we’re paying of that I don’t know, but I bet there were more suitors than us for his services.

That being said, Byrne hasn’t done much either recently, and they’re similar players, so maybe there’s something bigger which is causing our creative players to be struggling

He wouldn't be anywhere near us because if he was showing the same form he was in at Rovrum hed be playing in the championship. Not a lg1 relegation battle, I thought that would be obvious.

Like I said I don't know what he's earning, I don't care, its irrelevant and nothing to do with his form which hasn't been bad anyway.

If you’re going off how much money he earns compared to his performance levels I’d be confident we’d all agree he’s disappointed.

He’s a player deemed by 4 clubs as fit for the Championship, the prime age of his career. Would you argue that he’s reached the levels you’d expect from a Championship (or too end League 1) player?

I have idea how much he earns?

He has had a serious injury hasn't he which has restricted his playing time at Preston? He needs time to get up to speed and I don't think our pitch helps any of the midfielders. He has played 10 times from Preston in 2 years so what were you expecting? If he was showing the form he produced at Rotherham he wouldn't be anywhere near us loan or otherwise.

After Pringle has disappointed, there’s a starting spot waiting for McEleney if he can show something on his return

Has Pringle disappointed? He may not have lived up to the hype from some Latics fans (does anyone?!) but he has been solid and his delivery from set pieces has been excellent at times.

Just shows how we can all differ with our opinions, I thought Grounds was a cut above most of our other players at the time.

By the end of his time here he had improved no end and earned a move but in his 1st 12 months or so here I thought he was cack!

No Irony Harry. Are all these Holloway dick waving watchers the same Ollie Banks bashers.  Holloway walked straight off the pitch at Blackburn like I said. Never acknowledged one team mate nor fan.

I remember when you told me Jonathan Burn would play at an higher level than Dieng,  just had a look and Burn is turning out for York City in the National League North :chubb:

like I say I've been right on more than 1 occasion as you are aware however some don't work out and on occasion im wrong. They are just opinions as I said.

Burn hasn't lived up to the massive potential and talent, that's football. You don't captain that Boro youth renowned for producing youngsters without ability.

Ill take your word for it that I said that as I don't recall but im glad you didn't take it personally and go searching out the information. feel better hun? :OASISscarf:

I also didn't rate Grounds for a huge period here. hes done ok though.

Just wish that some posters to this forum would stop using the term ‘our fans’ when expressing a view (positive or negative) about the club. (And this is in no way aimed at you directly Mr palmer1)

I know that it’s just an expression but it tends to lump us all in the same ? when clearly there is a huge range of opinion on this forum.

’some fans’  or ‘a minority of fans’ is far more accurate.

    Just saying.?

    ?

Fair enough TheBigDog,  I wish some on here wouldn't take my opinion so personally it just my opinion. Many seem to take offence when I tell them a player they tout for stardom is nothing more than average. Its just happens ive been right on more than 1 occasion  ;)

New Blue is still waiting for Holloway to hit his stride ready for his championship run...

he got two individual goals but did very little else, no hold up play and wasnt in the game for large spells on sat. In fact in both games its been davies who's done the majority of the work down the channels so there';s never anyone in the box who will win us a header if we do actually whip it in. if he scores an individual goal every game and wins us points then fine he'll have justified his role but for me unless he offers more for the team he should be behind holloway, especially at home on our pitch. last night he was carried by davies who may as well have been up top on his own. his ability to play with his back to goal looked really poor, and he's going to have to play like that because of our pitch so we need someone who can do that. although i admit its only two games but he doesnt seem to want to challenge in the air and he's just waiting for a through ball to run onto and thats it. holloways' physical style and play meant he was more dangerous and a better option for us as a team in my opinion, as he was able to hold up the ball and wrestle through challenges to get us up the pitch. therefore i think he needs to do more to justify starting games.

Potentially another Tope who last season our fans loved but inevitably as always our fans are starting to turn on him because his end product is inconsistant at best...

Come in palmer1, your time is now.

I'll give him a few more weeks and hope he proves me wrong but for all the sarcastic comments on here aimed at me, my record on judging players on this board is pretty decent.

I can't comment on last nights performance as I couldn't make it to BP.

I get the point you're making but as long as a striker is scoring goals then i don't see a problem.

Before he joined he'd not played for a month, needs time to get match fit and gel into a new team, in a new league. The brace will give him confidence and I'm hoping he continues to score and gives Wellens a tough decision to make when Doyle comes back.

and like I alluded to, imo he will be exciting at times but very frustrating as Saturday will not happen every week. I hope it is but I very doubt it will be a difficult decision for Wellens.

I watch the players overall game, positioning, runs they make and when, first touch, if they lift there head etc etc He scored 2 great goals which means most Latics fans are now blind to the rest of his game. Give em a few weeks to catch up.

I hope he smashes 10 more but 10 minutes aside out of 3 games im cant see it yet.

Striker scores 2 goals created by himself and is described as ineffective...

    ...

    what

I meant in the other 2.5 games where he did nothing and you know it? well done though you took it completely out of context and got the upboats for it which will make you happy im sure.

I bet you cant tell me anything else he has done in 2.5 games which leaves 2 full games where he contributed little or nothing. Any other shots on target?

He'll be a big player for us but I thought that he tired along with the rest of the team early in the second half. There were a coupleof occasions where our left back wanted to send it down the line and he didn't offer a run.

He did that 1st half also when Byrne had no other option.

Dale Stevens of Brighton, second only to Jack Cork of Burnley for ground covered in the top flight this season. 189 miles to Cork's 198.

Don't remember him as that type of player when playing here.

That's because he wasn't, Stephens was more of a playmaker for us and he certainly wasn't a box to box work horse like his current stats suggest

However if you don't have the ball for 70% of the game you will do more running and as bad as we've been a times over the years we've always seen plenty of the football.

And centre half Ian Marshall arriving from Everton 1 in 15 and becoming one of the finest strikers of the ball we have seen here, not to mention his goals. Going on to further goal scoring success in the Premier League with other clubs.

Ian Marshall turned out to be a great striker however his striking of the ball could be erratic to say the least.

  16. Ive read all over social media that this lad is going to be fantastic for us with many saying him and Doyle are going to be unstoppable.

a fantastic performance yesterday in terms of 2 great goals but wants  to run with the ball rather than without it.

IMO he is a talented lad and given time he could be excellent for Wolves but for us I see someone who will be frustrating most of the time and other times he might 'do a Blackburn'. We need more consistency for the run in.

I dont think he will be a good partner for Doyle as he likes to keep the ball and will need a foil like Davies to play off. I also don't think he works hard enough without the ball and the goals don't keep coming fans will turn.

He doesn't run the wide channels which Byrne finds infuriating. He does head direct for goal which I love but that's not always an option.

So what are peoples views of him? What's the forward line when Doyle returns

  17. I saw Holloway clap the fans on Saturday before being the first off the pitch.

How long do you want him to stay on the pitch for Lags? Is there a prerequisite distance that he is supposed to walk before deciding the clap? what's acceptable to you?

he was on the half way line where he acknowledged the fans before going probably doing getting an injury treated

. Is 90 yards away to far to count as good fan acknowledgement or does he have to come and pat you on the fkn back for supporting the club?

The funny thing is this resentment to Holloway has obviously built over a few week/months so you just know when he lost a ball or missed that chance he gave him a right slagging and then wants a well done for it :)

Can anyone remember if Bruce Grobelaar's home debut was preceded by a warm-up and hitting the Chaddy End crossbar from outside the box with 3 shots out 3?

    Yep, remember it very well.

Just watched the highlights. It's clearer on them than it was from my angle how difficult the surface was to play on.

Still not sure what happened for the goal but Gerrard certainly had a guilty look about him, not much Johnny can do if it's diverted inside him at pace.

It didn't as Gerrard was yards away. From my angle yesterday is was very clear he stepped off his line for a cross & couldn't recover. His touch took it over the line.
