  1. It annoys me a bit that Wes gets no criticism when Furman does. They both get given the same job to do but Furman gets far more flack. They are both given the same brief so should be treated the same. Wes gets by so easily.

Wes is a better player imo. Would rather have him in the midfield if we are fighting a midfield battle than Furman. Dont get me wrong, I like Furman but Wes overall is a great ball winning midfielder. A bit like Gerrard and Lampard, they just cant play together and make us effective.......or at least they season they cant

  2. Although i'm happy about the three points. Hartlepool are dire, and for people to thank luck that we beat them, tells a story.

Dickov's first few months were great, but ever since, it's been mainly a downward spiral, with the occasional upbeat performances. I'm getting rather bored of it now, a team, that on paper should be doing better, but are constantly lacking on the pitch.

I'm not sure who's to blame for it though, Is it the players inconsistency? Is that why they are here anyway? or, is it down to Dickov to get out of them, what other managers couldn't get from them?

If Dickov had inherited this team then you could say that the players were to blame, but the fact is Dickov has brought in every single one of last nights starting eleven apart from Furman so it is his side and SC has backed him well to bring these players in. Therefore its up to PD to get the best out of the players he signed, however the players also need to shoulder some of the blame. We will never know what he says to them in the dressing room before, at half time and at full time, and we may never know if its the players not carrying out the instructions or whether they are carrying them out to the letter. Whatever happens, last night only papered over ever increasing cracks. Dickov will still most likely be gone by Christmas at the latest as I just dont have any faith or confidence that he will turn it around. That said though I hope he does and we kick into gear!

  3. These threads always make me laugh, what do people think he is going to say? If he says they were crap he gets slated, if he says there are some positives he gets slated, if he says we have to put it behind us and move on he gets slated, he can't win (that's possibly the problem but enough about the football).

What he should say is 'You know what we were total garbage today and have been for the majority of the season. We werent good enough today, we werent the better side and the players and myself need to up our ideas and our game against Hartlepool'. At least then we would know that he has been watching the same crap that the rest of us have paid to endure for most the season! Being positive and keeping spirits up is all very well and good, but sometimes he needs to give this team a fecking rollocking as thats what they deserve! He probably does it in the dressing room but what is the point of bollocking them for being a shambles in the dressing room then telling the media that we were unlucky and were the better side. If I was a player I would be thinking well which were we? Total :censored:e or just unlucky?

  4. Same old stuff really

mentioned having a young squad again and the loss of furman and wes

Is that the same Wes and Furman that have been :censored:e most of the season and helped us accumalate a grand total of 17 points so far? It didnt make a jot of difference not having them today, its a lame excuse and frankly a terrible one at that, however they are 2 more players who are playing well below the ability they have!

  5. If you knew PD would definitely be sacked if we lost at Hartlepool, would you want us to lose the game so it happened? It breaks my heart to say it but I would.

I never want us to lose again regardless of who is our manager. Even when we had Disaster Dave I still wanted us to win, and likewise if Dickov is still here come Tuesday I want us to go out and win the game and for him to prove us that he has got what it takes to be a good manager. I doubt he will though and for that reason he should do the admirable thing and say 'Ive tried my best and its time for someone else to have a go'. Im sure he will become a good manager but I think for all parties a fresh start would be the best way. He leaves with his reputation still relatively in tact and we have time to find someone who can get the best out of this squad of players.

  6. Away to bottom of the league Hartlepool and home to Shrewsbury are MUST win games. I think its more, "don't lose the next two" rather than "we have to win one." A couple of points against the top end teams with a hard working, battling performance will do for me.

Thats fine in theory except we dont pick up 3 points from our MUST win games do we, hence we heap pressure on ourselves to beat the 'better' teams in the league!

  7. Do we do our homework though? This is where i think Dickov is severly lacking!

This along with our plan B, taking off a defender and putting Matt Smith on. Its pretty much the same change every time we are losing no matter who the oppsoition. We make the same sub for every situation. If only you could put money on the next sub and time, you could make a fortune

Im sure we do do our homework, but I just dont think Dickov knows necessarily how to put that into action. It may be inexperience or it may be naivity who knows. Sometimes I just feel as if we turn up with one plan which is to play them off the park and if it doesnt work he is hoping for something to happen. To be fair to PD, you cant legislate for incidents last the og last night, nor crap backpasses or defensive mistakes like we saw against Walsall, but what he can dictate is the tempo and the tactics, especially at home. Its not a new problem for Latics though is it? How many times over the years have we seen us take good teams apart only to then serve up total dross like last night against the poorer teams in the league.

If we are doing our homework and sending scouts and what have you to watch the opposition then two questions need to be asked. Are these scouts tactically aware enough to spot weaknesses in our opponents and if not then why are they employed to do that job??!!?!?

  8. I'm pretty sure Kevin Blackwell would have swopped 7 or 8 of his players for ours before last nights game. Croft and Derbyshire are Championship players and Wabara and Baxter also wouldn't look out of place in a higher division

Why is it that this team is in the lower half of the league and we constantly struggle to put three wins together. I like Dickov and he has many admirable qualities, however, apart from the first couple of months we have failed to perform consistently well for any period throughout the whole of his tenure at this club.

We play well when we are allowed to do so ( which is not very often ) but when we are not allowed any time on the ball ( as was the case last night ) we seem totally devoid of ideas and struggle to change our style of play. This has been the pattern for over 2 years and no matter who wears the shirts the end result is nearly always the same.

Baxter said this week that he loves it here and that everything at the club is top drawer.......Wabara, Derbyshire, and Croft have said similar things in recent weeks and it is a glowing testament to Dickov's ability that he can firstly entice and then manage to keep such talented players at the club.

Why is it then that ( even though we have probably the best bunch of players we have had for many years ) we still fail to perform in the vast majority of our games.

Do we have the right mix, does Dickov have the tactical awareness, and more importantly, would a more experienced manager be able to get this team winning on a regular basis?

Last night was a classic example of other teams doing their homework on us. Stop us playing at a high tempo by pressing high up the pitch and cut off any supply to both Baxter and Derbyshire. By pressing us, as we have seen on countless occasions this season, we are prone to making mistakes and when teams do this to us we dont seem to have an answer and start playing it long. Derbyshire is a willing runner but on so many occasions yesterday he was chasing lost causes as the pass/hoof was often overhit/overhoofed. There is no denying that when we get the ball down and start to pass and move we are far more effective. All to often we resort to the same tactics as our opponents who have come with the intention of stopping us playing. We were on fire under Shez when we were allowed to play, as we were under Dickov, but once teams suss us out then we become so predictable and start with hitting and hoping again. I lost count of the amount of times we tried that long ball in the hope that Simmo would win the header, but bar the odd one he didnt win a thing.

Its the same old thing though, how much can the manager change once those players cross the white line? All you can give them is instructions and ask them to carry them out. If its not working then its the managers job to change this. There is rarely an excuse for not wanting it as much as your opponents and last night was the case. Bury came with a gameplan and for them it worked. We should have the players to deal with this as we do have some class players for this level, but if you arent up for it you can have all the talent in the world, but you will get turned over. As someone said in an earlier thread, Baxter looked pleased to come off and clearly didnt fancy it yesterday. At this level good players will get kicked but we have enough quality in the side to counteract that. Sadly Dickov's tactics if we are losing with 20 mins to go is throw Matt Smith on (who i actually think improved us yesterday as he was winning things in the air) and hope for the best.

It was a poor performance against a poor side........but how many more times do we need to say it!

  9. I all my years of supporting Latics this is the first season I turn up and thoroughly expect us to lose every week. A decent second half against Scunny on Tuesday disguised the fact that first half was as clueless as ive seen us since the Penney days. I have always backed PD but i really do believe that he has run out of ideas about how he can improve things. He has no experienced number 2 to bounce ideas off and frankly i dont think he is interested in other peoples ideas. In his words he has the best squad since he has been here, but the quality of football, attacking intent and overall crapness of the side is as bad if not worse most weeks than anything Penney's teams turned out!

Sorry Paul, thanks for the few games where we played decent football, but find a new profession as i dont think being a manager suits you!

  10. He's also ex-Burton Albion boss. The Brewers' Chairman Ben Robinson, once said: 'He's totally dedicated, a fiery character, determined, great motivator, a professional. Although he was part-time with us, he would think nothing of driving somewhere at 11pm to sign a player. He was outspoken, certainly, and occasionally would come into conflict with officials. But, generally, he was a bouncy, effervescent character, and that rubbed off on people. He was a great ambassador for the club.'

In the Isle of Man in '97, he was prepared to let the Latics fans take the penalties in a shoot-out (the fans had won every half-time shoot-out all week) but the ref wouldn't allow it. :disappointed:

He had a fruit-and-veg stall in Sheffield market, and perhaps that's why some think his comments are sour grapes. He's also a qualified chiropodist. so he could look after the England players' feet, especially those known for putting their foot in it.

He could be the next Mike Bassett!

The FA would never ever consider giving Colin the job. They want a 'yes' man who will do what he is told to do no questions asked, and that certainly isnt him. It doesnt matter who the England manager is, until the players start giving a toss, it wouldnt matter who the manager is. Its a thankless, poison challice of a job!
