I’d remove the tick against Hogan, who I think whilst Ok at this level is very much a NL standard Centre half who is very replaceable. I’d also keep the tick against Sutton, on the provision it was a Centre half only, and we’d be fine with Raglan, Hobson, McGahey and Sutton as centre halfs for the season.
Really don't get this-to pick out Hogan and then try to defend Sutton who other than the fact he has come thru the ranks doesn't make any sense. The lad is hopeless as a full back and cannot pass a ball to a blue shirt no matter what position he plays.

We are too slow, too small to compete in the National League. Even during the 8 game run that was still evident.
Well we looked like a team of giants compared to Rochdale last week.
Hogan seems to get a bit of stick-unfairly for me. Yes he had a poor game last night but so did Hobson & Kitching who have been a standouts so far.
Don't get your goalie comments at all-both OK for this standard-would like to see Norman get a run for no other reason than he may speed up play a bit.
The rest seems fair comment to me.

We took the Sandy Lane and all that's in it
We're gonna take you in just a minute.....
The hardcore Laics fans didn't take many ends in those days, apart from Rochdale and Bury, though I remember them making their presence felt at grounds like Crewe, Stockport and Chester in 1970-71. Once we were promoted to Div 3, our fans were pretty minor league in the hardcase stakes. Where were they at places like Bolton and Blackburn?
Well that helped it get back on discussing the match.

Probably yeah its an exaggeration, but it's still too many and they seem he'll bent on ruining it for everyoneelse.
I mean call me crazy I just want to go to the game and enjoy it.
Well they didn't spoil it for me and I enjoyed the game.

The game, anyone ?
Can't make my mind up about Norwood. Either he is trying too hard or nothing quite works for him at the moment BUT then he scores a sublime finish.
Seems to be soo frustrated on the pitch sometimes-is it the standard of players around him, the style of play or with himself?
Mind you he should be frustrated after Lundstram refused that pass to him in the first half.
Oh and Hudson drives me crackers-how he got away without a booking yesterday for time wasting escapes me. Be interesting to see if Mellon tries to speed up the pace of play and ditch the long kicking.

This is what happens at our local aways these days we have a massive group of morons who turn up to cause trouble
Bit of an exaggeration. 3000 there yesterday and maybe 50-100 at most got excited.

This... We go to quite a lot of aways and when tickets flew out the door as quickly as they did first thing we said is this isn't going to end well. Noticeable there was a lot of people of a certain age there today in their Stoneys. Didn't help the amount of people bringing a pint in from the bar that stewards seemed to not be arsed with, I got a beer shampoo when the first goal went in knew it wasn't piss as it wasn't warm.
This also.
One thing this game and Chesterfield have in common is appalling stewarding. I could have told you the trouble would be in both corners of the stand where we are next to opposing fans. There were only about 5 stewards for the whole of the stand at first with nothing in the corners until the goals started to go in.
The Rochdale stewards actually ended up having a proper dust up with their own supporters in the first half and our fans were blatantly drinking in full sight of the pitch.
Lots of posts about bad behaviour-not condoning it. Hell it is the society we live in now it but it should and could have been managed much better.

Orpheo Keizerweerd?!
Think he is mentioned earlier in the thread-was a sub in one of the 1993 Liverpool games.

Anyway, it wasn't supposed to be that deep - apologies if my light-hearted poke at Rochdale offended you
Not at all.
On a similar lighthearted note you and a few others are obviously not old enough to remember the Oldham Chron Rose Bowl games!

he will be in the Nile like me.
our derbies are city, united, leeds, huddersield, barnsley, liverpool, blackburn etc
l suppose Wrexham too off the pitch.
I think we are talking about different types of derby.

I don't see it as a derby. I don't think I've even known Dale to sing a song when we've played them. Ever. They bring nothing to the party.
Acknowledging this as a derby is an admission of how tinpot we've become, which I refuse to do. It's temporary. They should enjoy playing us while it lasts. Natural order will be restored soon.
Surely the numbers going contradict this?
Last week we played Alty-approx 1500 went even after POTD was announced. This week over 3000 going and tickets sold out for weeks.
Fail to see it has anything in your words to do with being"tinpot" as we have played them in various leagues over many years and it has always been seen as a 'derby match'.
You could look up the definition if you still disagree.

Phillips is not good enough for City. Sheron is not good enough for Latics.
Which illustrates the discussion perfectly-even at the highest standard some managers prefer a 'water carrier'.

I see both sides of the argument with Sheron. He’s a battler, and always puts a shift in. But is he a promotion winning midfielder- IE do you see him linking defence and attack and or playing the killer pass- not for me.
Having said that, I’d like to see him and Lundy for a few games to see if they can gel. Because if Lundy can be the link player and he does dirty work then there could be potential there. If he is replaced though, I’d definitely still have him in every match day squad because he’s a fantastic utility player who won’t let you down.
Having watched the England match tonight here is a Sheron analogy for you.
Phillips played in midfield-was lucky to stay on after 2 bad tackles but this is basically all he did. No lack of effort yet almost every pass was a wall pass or went backwards BUT he was surrounded by better players who both covered and compensated for his weakness.
Can see why he struggles to get in the City side but is an almost automatic pick for England.
Can England win the Euros with him in the squad?

Listened to his interviews. How refreshing. He will certainly have expectations with the team and will not put up with lack of effort.
Weren't people saying the same thing about Thompson after Unsworth's ramblings?

Anyway back on topic....
We have an experienced and proven new manager in Mellon, who is better placed than anyone to get the best out of Norwood, which we havnt seen yet. I'm predicting him getting 20+ more goals from now until the end of the seson.
So with the classic new manager bounce, a sold out away following local derby this weekend and a current unbeaten in 7 run, we should piss over Rochdale on Saturday, and move into the top 7 next Tuesday night after mullering bottom of the table Fylde.
Onwards and upwards...
See how positive I'm being!
Looking forward to revisiting this post on Weds morning next week.

Well he certainly looks a better player than Sheron in that position, he made a couple of shite long passes but other than that I was quietly impressed with his performance.
Impressed by how vocal he was too.
He nearly took the stand roof off with his deflected shot just before he scored.

Is Hope on international duty? Might be needing him if Green & Dickenson are injured.
Green was terrible today and made the sub decision easy after getting injured, we looked better after he went off.

As predicted Dickinson has broke down, zero aerobic fitness and a passenger in the centre of the park.
That wins the prize as your daftest post yet.
The bloke was playing OK and smacked into the hoardings (may have caught one of the ballboys too)-no wonder he had to go off.
3 hours ago, yarddog73 said:Alty neat and tidy, some structure to the way they play and I suspect a 1-0 defeat today if we can't put our foot on the ball and string some passes together.
Never really threatened other than clipping the bar with a deflection-quiet day for Hudson, looked as though he was carrying a knock in 2nd half.

But it's not a shitshow or unmitigated disaster. We've enough experience of those over the last few years to recognise this as not being remotely on that scale.
Exactly. Nothing different to what many other teams go thru when changing managers.

There's also an argument for Thompson to steady the ship and then possibly move in to a Director of football role where we could bring in a younger more progressive coach to work under him.
So he sorts out the problems and somebody else gets the gig?
You are really selling the job. Would you be happy accepting that?
Wasn't he already director of football and look where that has got us?

There isn't a single point in that post that is based upon fact-just what you feel at the moment, none of which you can substantiate.
