  1. It's the number of times an Oldham player passed to a Halifax player, with no Oldham player even close, that really gets to me. It's so bad, really bad. Then there's the number of crosses from Clarke that were simple catches for the keeper. We have too many truly dreadful players who can't do the basics that it will take a total clear-out to even start turning this around. Then there's the attitude. Abraham was a breath of fresh air because he actually got stuck in. He underlined the wider problem. Not just lack of talent but totally unacceptable attitudes. I would get rid of at least 10 straight away.

Still, we might be better when McGahey returns....oh, wait, he's on the 'let's get rid' list.

  2. It really is down to the previous owners. They were going to liquidate us. John did his best to get a squad together, based on very limited resources along with a wing and a prayer. We were saved with a couple of weeks to go before the start of the season. Damage was done. We had a patchwork quilt of youngsters and journeymen. I think John did well to get the likes of Hogan and Sheron, with Gardner ready to join if the owner left, but it was all a bit of a dog's dinner. Now some people are actually blaming the new manager who has to pick up the pieces and miraculously make them better. Added to all of this has been a horrendous injury list. Fitness levels are poor. Ability levels with a lot of them are low. We have had a huge turnover in players, again. We need a bit of time.

Only one man and his brother to blame. What happened to 'as soon as they go I'll be back?'

  3. I think they were all visibly upset by the sad death of the Queen. I heard they all thought they were heading south to see her return to London. Imagine the shock to the poor lads when they were asked to play football. Shame on the football authorities for putting our boys through such turmoil.

On a different note, my abiding memory of Darren Fergusson is when he turned on the gobby fan in the Main Stand paddock. I really thought he was going to hit him. On that basis, yes, let's sign him up and give Main Stand paddock STs to the Reul is stick group.

  4. Stainrod was my hero. What a player. Great for QPR in the top flight, as well.

Wylde was a great character and goal scorer (I still see his knee slide at Rotherham).

Then the other Roger came along to break all records.

Shit, we had some good players.

Sorry, I know people have a lot of affection for Groves, but I found him a bit creepy. I was very young, and perhaps his disgusting marriage to a kid affected my judgement. No doubting he had talent (although I still say it was mainly at a lower level, unlike Stainrod who was, without doubt, a much better player).

Agree - his facial features and skin colour indicated mixed race heritage (or always did to me).

And without doubt, the most skillful Latics player I have ever had the pleasure of watching - and by some distance. We've had some great and exciting players for sure but he stands head and shoulders above all others in my view.

I am, however, not old enough to have witnessed Bobby Johnstone play for Latics. One or two who did, say he was "on a different planet" (different type of player to Grovesy obviously).

Stainrod over the nonce, every time. Groves never did it at the highest level, unlike Stainrod, Ritchie and Sheridan. I'd even say the likes of Snodin were far better. He spent most of his career lower down the league.

Sorry, he was skilful, but we've had better. He had no affection for the club and I never liked him at the time or since.

Both still learning the game, Vaughan needs to create space and Couto may well finish up as an attacking midfielder,

Couto can't defend. He has a nice left foot, but, I agree, he's better pushed up on the left of an attacking midfield. I also agree that Vaughan is a No.10, attacking midfield/deep sitting striker. He needs to beef-up, but he's young and he obviously has huge potential.

    Keillor Dunn signed for Burton.

Scored some worldies but I still thought he was generally crap. He had a couple of good spells over two years, but the number of misplaced passes and the way he drifted in and out of games means, for me, he was vastly over rated. Another light weight with no bottle for a fight. Sometimes, his inability to play the simple pass was dreadful.

  8. As it stands, the next manager would be Lampard or Gerrard. Potter is a sensible choice, and I think Cooper is a really good manager, but I think the FA would go for a higher profile figure. Of course, it'll all be different in 12 months (or less if we have a bad World Cup, which looks likely at the moment).

Then again, the FA thought it was a good idea to give the job to Sam Allardyce, so maybe Sean Dyce should start polishing his cv.

i suppose north west football fans are blessed with having so many genuine local derbies.  The rest of the country has to take them where they can

    Bradford v Mansfield - not a derby

Preston? Lancashire? Preston was never a derby (Bolton, then City, now Rochdale...), and we've been in Greater Manchester for nearly 50 years (stands back and waits for the abuse from little Lancastrians who still live in pre-industrial times).
