  1. Just heard from Simon Corney that the Crackerjack deal is off. Apparantly Clifton would only sign if he could bring the ostrich, and we haven't got room in the budget for 3 new players.
  2. oh we're not signing Stu "Oooh I could crush a grape" Francis and Bernie Clifton are we?
  3. The second biggest chin in football after Jimmy Hill
  4. Funny thing is I bet a large proportion of those booing him don't even remember him playing for us. I think I've seen the light on this after reading some of the post's above. It's simple really, Scunthorpe and Blackpool got out of this division in quite a simple fashion. They were well organised at the back, had a pretty defensive midfield with, especially in Blackpool's case, one flying winger in Hoolahan. Also they had some pace up front and strikers who could finish. There wasn't much creativity through the middle of midfield at all. Well we have signed some decent defensive players both at the back and in midfield (although I would like to see a specialist left back sign so we can go 4-4-2 if we need to), we have Taylor on the wing and Davies up front with pace and Lee Hughes, who if he still has it, should get a hat full at League 1 level. Shez has analysed how teams got out of this division last season and followed the same model.
  5. I'm sick of all this negativity about Allott. He was a bobbins striker agreed, but in the games we've played against Chesterfield since he went there he has been their outstanding player. In the match at BP last season he was by far the best player on the pitch in the first half. A local lad and a Latics fan, people have been crying out for loyalty on this and other boards and here we have it. He's had so much stick from the fans over the years when he's come back, yet he's grabbed his chance to come back and don the blue shirt again because he loves the club. Fair play to you Mark.
  6. Come on, be serious! Carrs was a trier and a fans favourite a bit like Warne, but Wellens is as good a Midfielder as you will ever see at League 1 level.
  7. I was a big Wellens fan but at the end of the day he had a 2 year contract, he has fullfilled it and now moved on. Can anyone on this board honestly say that if in their work another company came in an offered you a higher salary to do exactly the same job, you wouldn't take it. Of course you would!! The harsh reality is that the ONLY people in football that have loyalty are the fans, and I mean the fans of lower league clubs actually, not the 20,000 who would stop going to Old Trafford if that lot had a couple of bad seasons. The fans of Clubs such as Rochdale who haven't EVER had anything to celebrate, not even a promotion, but yet every summer renew their season tickets. What we all need to do now is exactly what our un-official motto says and "Keep The Faith." I have read above and seen talk of mediocre seasons; but that's what we thought this time last year, and even if it is a mediocre season have faith the Shez backed by TTA will get it right for us soon. So Wellens has moved on; the king is dead, long live the King, King Kalala!! (Actually is this the year of the Rat? )
  8. Oldham's answer to Roberto Carlos.................................................................. Don't think Carlos has ever had Puddin' on a Muffin' though
  9. It's difficult to say how much of it is Porter and how much of it is his agent but in my opinion he is not the sort of player we should be looking to have at BP. He (or his agent, or both) is clearly only driven by money; I cant see how moving to the likes of Motherwell is a step up from playing for us, apart from the Old Firm games. It's all about increasing his wages and getting a hefty signing on fee, you could argue that you can't blame him for this, but he should be thinking a bit longer term. If he had stayed on with us and had another season like last year for goal scoring, he could well have found himself being snapped up by a Premier League club or at least be playing in The Championship with us or perhaps someone else.
  10. I can see where this is leading. Porter signs for Dundee Utd on a free transfer on Monday with Porter and his agent getting a hefty signing on fee. On Tuesday Dundee Utd sell Porter for £500,000 to Plymouth Argyle which covers their signing on fee's from the first deal and also leaves them with a tidy profit for 1 days work. Porter and his agent get also get a signing on fee for this too.
  11. Didn't he actually score a hat-trick that day Diego? I bumped into him when he was seeing out the end of his career with the Lashers. I was on a works do at the Imperial Hotel and when I went down for breakfast in the morning there was the mulletted one sat on his own tucking into the mother of all full English Breakfast's, I've never seen such a plate full. So I asked him "Not playing today then Ian?" he looked at me rather perplexed and said (in his high pitched squeeky voice) "Yeah." Will always be remebered by myself for the goals at Wolves away in what was probably one of the best Latics games I've been to.
  12. Just read that myself, looks like it was just a big publicity stunt. Just to add to the conspiricy theory don't the fishul get money from advertisers the more hits they have, this being the case they must have needed an extra £50 for the Davies bid so they put the Berger story out!
  13. Davis only made 1 apperance for Verona and didn't manage to get on the score sheet. Davis Verona Stat
  14. I'm starting to think the vastly experienced striker was Berger; Davis is only 21 so doesn't fit that bill. I'm guessing we are still looking out for at least one more Striker especially if/when Ports leaves. Not much of a goalscorer either is he
  15. COME ON FOUR O'CLOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. I'm I the only one who lost control of his bladder after reading this on the fishul?
  17. England - Goes without saying Scotland - Hibs, this comes from the time we sold Andy Goram to them in the 80's Spain - Real Madrid, when all the Galactico's were in there prime probably the greatest club side ever assembled. France - St Ettienne, my Dad brought me a kit home from a business trip in the 70's, needless to sayI was the only kid with one! Germany - Eintract Frankfurt because of the fans link with us + Schalke 04 Italy - Lazio, stems from When Gazza went over in the early 90's and they started showing games on Channel 4. And then basically anyone B*****d Rovers played when they were in the Champions League.
  18. Why would he want to buy us if he's just led Gretna into the SPL? What's in it for him? I know you're not allowed to have interests in 2 clubs in the same country but what are the rules concerning clubs in different country's?
  19. Well before my time but my Dad's favourite Latics player ever, and he's been going for 60 years this season! He's been described to me as being similar to Andy Ritchie but better; Bobby was miles ahead in terms of footballing ability than anything else in the division at the time. Perhaps different from many other LOTW players in that he was a genuine international class player who played at the highest level of the game. One of the "famous 5 Hibs" players of the 50's that also formed the backbone of the Scotland team. In his day he was a reasonable cricketer too. We had a thread on this board recently posing the question "who would put 2000 on Latics gate?" Well as a sign of the respect that Bobby was held in by football fans, on his debut for Latics 17,116 turned up to watch, up to that point in the season home attendances were around the 4000 mark! He was also part of the Latics side that faced Liverpool in 1962 when 42,000 turned out at BP (can you imagine that now!) and gave them a good game. This game has always been famous in our house because my Dad brought my Mum home 2 days early from their honeymoon so he could go!
  20. Not the most gifted footballer you will ever meet but probably the best athlete we have ever had at the club. He had a great turn of pace and tremendous upper body strength which mean't that he always won a race for the ball with a centre forward and steered the ball back to the 'keeper. One thing really stopped him from reaching the very top, and that was he had even worse distribution than Scott McNiven. This wasn't so much a problem when he played centre back but cost him dearly at full back where the likes of Big Ron always wanted to play him. I still see him and brother Floyd out on the lash in Rochdale from time-to-time and he always has time to speak to a (usually drunk!) Latics fan. He is a true Gentleman and the toast of every away fan to BP since the early 90's.
  21. What a difference 24 hours makes eh Bigfin! Yesterday you were telling me to keep calm and not panic as there was no activity in the lower leagues. The only activity seems to be us losing half our squad!
