  1.

I think he's got a bit of Clodoaldo (out-Hipster THAT name OWTB) about him and expect him to do similar to this in midfield on a regular basis

You can tell we're ready for the new season. A player signs from non-league and we're comparing him to Clodoaldo.

    I hope you're right, mind.

  2. ^NOT a contender. Beat before the first whistle. I suppose we'd better get used to that level of non-commitment now. Ah well.

My commitment was dashed on the opening day of the 2015/16 season, when a 100% correct match prediction saw me hit a season-high of 2nd, kept off the top spot by an incorrect match prediction and a lucky attendance shout. I never recovered from that. I'm not bitter though, and after a good off-season I'm back to restore some faith in the LaticsChris brand.

  3. Peter Clarke is one of those players that it always felt inevitable would end up turning out for us, being locally based and always bobbing around somewhere near our level.

Could be a useful signing with something of a Gregan impact. Might also turn out to be tosh, but we'll see.

  4. Went out of business in 2011.

It's a shoddy tale, they should never have moved from being Horwich RMI in the first place! Leigh doesn't even have a Royal Mechanics Institute. They were pretty much forcibly removed to make way for the new stadium. I went to a Horwich RMI vs Latics XI friendly when I was a young un, and about 20 years on I finally get to see another Oldham team play in Horwich! Might have a drink at Horwich RMI cricket pavilion on the day too, for posterity. ;)

Well well well, I did a cursory google check before I wrote that comment, but didn't realise it said they play in Fred's Pie Shop Sunday 8th Division. What a shame.

  5.

I think the issue with Giggs would be would he really want SO'D as DoF working above him? I think he'd feel with the career he's had (even though in reality it counts for nothing in management) he's earned the right to be his own man

If he's got the correct attitude to manage at this level he'd understand that someone like O'Driscoll would be invaluable in providing the lower league experience he lacks. That's a big 'if' though.

  6. Napoli were going to name their stadium after Maradona but it's prohibited to name a public building after somebody before they've been dead 10 years...

    In Italy, that is.

Whilst I'm open to the argument that Lord Ferg was a member of the Army of the Dead for a good portion of the last two decades he was still managing United when they named the stand after him.

  7. All I'm getting when I try and vote is "You must cast a vote in each question of the poll".

I'm no Bill Gates but I know how to fill a bleeding poll in on OWTB. Tried 6 or 7 times now so I give up.

    Happy with Dowie.

Ok with Robins, Coleman, Redfearn and Coterill.

    Unhappy with the rest.

Why? Because I think Dowie would be the only choice at this point to lift fans and bring a spirit back to the club.

Robins is competent and experienced but a red bastard, Coleman a failure at Dale but done well at Accy so not sure what to expect, Redfearn did OK at Leeds in difficult circumstances but nothing spectacular and Coterill seems a decent manager but can he work with a shoestring budget? Also his voice annoys me a tad.

The rest I don't think are up to what is going to be a :censored:ing massive job!

Whoever we get, they need to be in place last week if we're to assemble what would even remotely resemble a 'team'.

Hope the board make the correct decision this time or we're up :censored: creek without a paddle.

    I'm getting the same message.

I'd be happy with Robins, as you say he's competent and experienced. Does someone being a red really put anyone off a manager? We're really not in a position to be so emotional about these things.

  8. I thought the name Boleyn Ground was common knowledge. For those interested, this is from Wikipedia:

The club rented Green Street House and grounds in the Municipal Borough of East Ham from the Roman Catholic Church from around 1912.[3][not in citation given] Green Street House was known locally as Boleyn Castle because of its imposing nature and an association with Anne Boleyn, who had either stayed at or, as some believe, owned the house. Hence renting the grounds of "Boleyn Castle" the name Boleyn Ground came into being.

I don't remember Maine Rd so much, but there was definitely a grand old circle jerk when Arsenal left Highbury.

  9. Rail seats being installed at Celtic Park over the summer to accommodate 2,600 fans, permission was granted in June and the rail seats will be in place for next season, is this open to any club to trial or have Celtic been given special permission? Would anyone be happy with a return to safe standing areas?

I think the permissions Celtic have will be largely irrelevant as they're under a different league and FA, as well as devolved building regulations etc.

I'm all for safe standing though, particularly in the lower leagues, where there's no real danger of large, 'dangerous' crowds.

  10. In all seriousness if shez stays and we remain unbeaten in our last two games I don't see why we can't carry on the momentum and be up there... The clever punters that backed Leicester at the start of this year did it based on their finish to the season before...

We just need to find a lower league Mahrez and Vardy

I think the lower league Vardy will be lining up in France this summer!

You're right though, momentum could be key. Part of that though is not titting bout with the squad too much. Finishing the season well is great, but if we have a team including 5 or 6 new players on the opening day then it's a completely fresh start. To continue your Leicester analogy the only change to their regular starting line up has been Kante.

  11. It's interesting how the voting has swayed towards 'in' since the Obama intervention.

I think it had swayed that way already when I last looked at this thread early last week prior to Obama's statement, a big swing from the leave majority when I'd looked at this thread previously. Having said that I'm sure a lot of people who were on the fence will have/will be swayed by the fact such a big figure has expressed their desire for the UK to remain, whatever you think of their motives.
