  1. I'm the opposite, don't know anybody personally that's voting IN.

It doesn't surprise me. I think it's very likely that people you choose to hang around with often have similar political and world views. That's one reason this discussion is so interesting, it opens our eyes to other peoples' views we might not necessarily have heard otherwise.

  2.

    Could you tell us why?

I don't think there's much point. None of us are going to change our opinions on the subject based on what a bloke on a football forum says, even if we did share opinions on the best way to utilise Liam Kelly.

But as I said, I believe this is very personal and depends on what you value. I've come to the conclusion that the EU can offer a good amount of protection for the least well off in society, whether this be through employment law or regulations affecting benefits etc. I also value the free movement of people and see a lot of the rhetoric regarding us being overrun with immigrants as unfounded. I suppose I'm one of those wanky liberals that sees themselves as both British and European citizens.

There are many other reasons that I would struggle to recall from the top off my head, but nonetheless I'm satisfied I'm making the correct decision for me.

  3. I must admit I'm very surprised that this poll seems to be leading significantly to an out vote. I've so far spoken to very few people who are contemplating anything other than staying in. Admittedly all within my circle of friends and colleagues, so I suppose they're likely to have similar opinions anyway.

I was instinctively a yes, and having read a fair bit in order to get a grasp on the issue I'm probably even more in favour than I was before.

Ultimately there's no right answer. We will all vote on the issues that matter to us. Each side will tell us there are great risks associated with the other option, in reality it'll be (just/at least) OK either way, but some of us may decide this isn't a country we want to live in anymore. Some might see the boosting of British industries as a key factor, others may give it less weight whilst giving more weight to the European space programme. It also raises the issues of nationhood, some fiercely defend our sovereignty whilst others struggle to grasp why it matters at all.

Basically this is a pretty big decision and quite a complicated issue.

  4. Just to try to clear up a point on the feet leaving the ground:

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

    • kicks or attempts to kick an opponent

    • trips or attempts to trip an opponent

    • jumps at an opponent

    • charges an opponent

    • strikes or attempts to strike an opponent

    • pushes an opponent

    • tackles an opponent

One could argue that the feet leaving the ground is included in the offence of jumping at an opponent, so a free kick may be the correct decision. However...

A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the following seven offences:

    • serious foul play

    • violent conduct

    • spitting at an opponent or any other person

    • denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

    • denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick

    • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures

    • receiving a second caution in the same match

There is no mention of feet coming off the ground in the red card offences.

It's up for debate whether you include Brown's challenge in the 'serious foul play' category, but this feet leaving the ground thing is the same as pundits telling us repeatedly that the laws state a player can't raise his arms, without bothering to actually refer to the laws to check.

All fans, pundits and even managers could do worse than sparing a few minutes to actually take a few minutes to flick through the laws of the game they purport to know so much about. There are only seventeen.

  5. I can't keep up with the hipster rules and regulations these days. I mean I have a beard and ride a bike, but my bike has gears and I sometimes watch the Voice. Where do I stand?

Anyway, I'm making my first trip down to Champion Hill tomorrow. It had better be the glorious Football As It Should Be that the left wing press would have me believe.

  6. On a wet Tuesday night with our form against Southend you couldn't get 4000 to turn out if you gave tickets away because we are competing against Champions League on the telly. Now you could have got a better response next Tuesday in the FA Cup but Mansfield and the FA would have to agree to that.

    Can't fault them for trying.

And they absolutely wouldn't. They wouldn't let FCUM charge their usual £9 because it's less than the FA Cup minimum.
