This for me. Horrible. The lowest point in 34 years in supporting the club. All in the context of life, etc. but I was proper fed-up for a week or so after.

Even though the football has been shite the last two seasons, I think the atmosphere - generated by the Athleticos - has been fantastic. It goes some way to compensating what happens on the pitch in terms of the whole experience.

Before these two seasons, we didn't even have that...

Yeah, it’s very easy to forget how low that felt. The nadir being the boarding up of the JRS, and the farce of playing the last ten minutes to an empty ground knowing our fate was sealed. It was really desperate.

While the last two seasons have been frustrating nothing comes close to that feeling.

A club heading into oblivion can’t be compared with a club trying to rebuild- (even with shooting our selves in the foot at times)

You keep implying that his words/actions can be taken by the squad to be him meaning all of them. I don’t think that’s the case with what he’s said. In fact he’s said a few times that he has good players who need others to come in and help them out.

No, I said the other day - it’s not all of them. It would be silly to suggest it’s all of them. But Suzanne has already said quite a few been told to find new clubs. And that’s not Reid, Kurt, Nuttall, etc. It’s Hogan, Sheron and others.

Maybe you and the others are right-

They’ll be no hangover in mentality with players that have already failed, and everyone in the squad will buy into Mellon despite the fact he doesn’t rate a few, and they won’t talk to each other because he’s told them it’s his way or nothing.

Look at it from a different angle. Had mellon kept in house and no one outside the club were non the wiser, these unwanted bad apples get free rein to sit on the sidelines collecting their wedge. Now....everyone knows and there's no hiding of that's what they do.  Yes reality is they can still do that,  they have a contact but when mellon banishes them everyone knows why.

I’ve no issue there in principle.

If he doesn’t want to play them, and it quickly becomes clear who is contracted but not fancied - then fine.

But it’s not that simple is it.

He banished Reid- and Kitching decided he didn’t want to play football anymore.

Fine- banish Kitching, and sign a new left back.

Kitching then becomes Reid this season- there. .  but never playing. . . and the cycle starts again.

Mellon is very much my way or fuck off. Fine.

But he’s not at a club and situation to be able to do that. He needs to adapt for the greater good, to buy himself the time needed to finish the job.

Just saying- right, everybody out- none of you are good enough Is never going to work. He needs to be a lot cuter in how deals with players instead being so black and white.

What I don't understand is that you appear to side with the very bad apple players to disrupt next season like they did this.

Lags- let me be absolutely crystal clear. The players are and have been a collective shambles.

But you’re confusing siding with them and the reality of the situation.

Mellon is telling us in a myriad of different ways- that he is stuck with these players. He’s bemoaning publicly he can’t move them on. He’s telling us he’s knows what good looks like and the contracted players aren’t that. He’s telling us the squad need an overhaul.

Mellon doesn’t win the games. The players do. If you think that his diatribe will have no effect on current players still needed next season then fine, but I think he has shot himself in the foot.

I'd rather drive them out,  if that means garden leave so be it if they refuse to find another club where they maybe happy.

If this was remotely possible, I wouldn’t have a single problem with what he said. Let’s get rid of 36 players by hook or crook and let him mould it as he sees fit.

But that isn’t the realty is it????

He has a lot of players, who he has slated but will still need because he can’t sack them all.

He doesn’t want them there, but expects them to perform??? Doesn’t make any sense.

He's divisive in your opinion because he said things that you don't want to hear.

    I’m not important mate.

The players are. If you think some of contracted lads will put a shift in for him next season, and won’t poison the new lads when they’re not playing- then fine. But I think there’s a good chance that both will happen. Time will tell which one of us is right.

But he's calibrating expectation levels of the fanbase.

Eh? When should a manager ever calibrate fan expectation. He doesn’t decide where we should finish. 😂😂   The board set the expectation, based on budget- not him. He works to an agreed set of expectations on agreeing his employment. He said on Radio Manchester and other outlets not long after he joined that playoffs was the expected target. He’s failed.

Now he has failed- he calibrating fan expectations. . . nah. He’s making excuses and alienating people.

He's telling it how it is for the first time when he's been toeing the line keeping a lid on his frustrations for six months.

I get that- and when people speak passionately it’s not always what you would say on reflection. But, like you said he’s been bubbling away for long time- so it’s not a reaction- he’s been itching to say it. So choose your words very carefully- instead of throwing the board, the players,  and the fans under the bus. The first rule of leadership is personal accountability, not blaming everyone else.

It's raw, fairly unpalatable and resets us for a completely new team over the next two seasons. His team.

He won’t get anywhere near two seasons if he chooses to be raw and alienate.

This Wealdstone interview has seemingly been more about how he's hurting the feelings of Latics fans hanging on his every word than the substance of what it actually was.

    Giver over.

It’s got nothing to do with fans feelings, I don’t anybody was hurt by what he said. 😂 No one cares that much. It’s just having an opinion on the substance, which was contradictory uninspired venting.

If it ruffles a few feathers of some Latics fans who are umming and ahhing about ST's then so bit it.

I’d rather he wasn’t divisive, and create a them and us mentality. He’s very prickly of any criticism. Won’t go on the pod after they said he walked out before their interview. Shot Alan down, after his only honest and testing question all season. Brings up getting shit off fans, and says- don’t question me. . No problem when you’re winning. You look stupid when you’ve won 1 in 13.

Or maybe he's trying to deflate the market. We've spent money recently. If everyone around us thinks we've got bags of cash laying around then every fee is higher, every salary is higher, etc.etc.

He could just be being smart about it.

He's not perfect and we've fucked this season up dramatically, but the worst-case mentality of fans (not you LOF, just in general) is not helping.

    Yeah. Very possibly.

But it’s all about how you frame it Ack.

You can say- it’s going to be struggle, but the club are with me and we recognise the need to overhaul things. I respect our position financially but we’ll be doing everything we can to put things right.

You’ll notice the above is about the collective. I’ve no problem with being honest, as long as you inspire at the same time and show some leadership in tough times.

Instead he’s said (paraphrasing) the board and owners are lovely but they fucked up. I know said I’d respect what the family have spent but that was bollocks, because in reality I told them after Flyde we might go down. I know I was given 6 signings, but you can’t count them over half season because of what I inherited. I don’t like excuses, but will give you several more. If you can’t change the player then change the player. That means if you can’t coach them to improve then replace them. I’m telling you this because I know what good looks like- and don’t even question me on that. I know I’ve said we’re over budget but in reality lots of new players will sign because I’ve already told the board who I want and they’ve agreed because if they don’t we might go down. What all of this means is, I know better than everyone at the club. Even though I’m at pains to say we, what I really mean is- it’s everyone else who’s at fault. Because I’ve won 5 promotions, and you haven’t.

I saw James Norwood in a supermarket in Salford yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a dick and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

    Get rid imo

    Mmm.

It’s a nice effort, if there wasn’t multiple stories (which I’m sure are all made up because he seems a lovely guy and he always performs. . . ) about him being an absolute cock.

But- having said that,  he is a good footballer so maybe we should we pray at his feet and thank the lord he is here, because without him. .  let’s face it we’d probably end up folding.

It was more the fact that he asked for a two night stay at the luxury hotel and had the use of the gym and pool, spa for team bonding . The captain complained that they didnt want to spend the second night and kicked up a fuss. The extent was that the hotel made them packed lunches for the  way home and the captain said this was crap food and the squad would eat shit at the service station: Mickey apparently exploded as they also had Thursday off and realised he was looking after a bunch of kids.

Doesn’t surprise me - but on the other hand isn’t there an element of nobhead behaviour in every squad at every club.

Mellon should absolutely drive team ethic and professionalism, but he also needs to pick his battles for the greater good.

When you stack up all the stories this season it’s clear there’s a culture and mindset problem, I just hope he doesn’t alienate the players while trying to maintain standards. He needs them on side.
