Thought we'd had enough of journeymen strikers.

Latics close in on loan deal

ATHLETIC are set to make a loan move for Reading’s Mitchell Bryant, while much-travelled striker Michael Bridges is also thought to be on their transfer radar.

Bryant, an 18-year-old midfield player, was due to feature for the reserves in last night’s totesport.com League fixture against Preston North End.

But a mix-up in communications meant Bryant, a second-year professional, failed to make the coach as it left for Bamber Bridge where Preston play their home fixtures.

Bryant was a former junior at Manchester United, but was a scholar at Reading, for whom he signed his first professional contract in the summer of 2008.

The teenager had a loan spell at non-league Basingstoke Town last season.

Bridges, meanwhile, is a free agent having been released by Hull City in the summer.

The 31-year-old Bridges recently joined Athletic’s Coca-Cola League One rivals Milton Keynes Dons on non-contract terms but left after three weeks at the club in which he made one first-team appearance.

Bridges, a former England under-21 international, has played for Sunderland, Leeds, Newcastle, Bolton and Bristol City.

He has most recently had spells on loan from Hull at Australian club Sydney FC and Carlisle, for whom he played against Athletic last season.

Athletic reserves squandered a two-goal lead as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Preston.

Coach Lee Duxbury’s side dominated the opening half in which they opened a two-goal lead through Hungarian Attila Beszterczei, one of the players recruited from MTK Budapest, and Kieran Lee.

Preston fought back in the second half with goals from Danny Mayor and Ryan McGreevy, the leveller being scored with only 30 seconds of added time left.

Athletic’s team featured mainly youngsters, the three most senior players in action being goalkeeper Premyslaw Kazimierczak, Kelvin Lomax and Lee, who scored the first team’s dramatic late equaliser against Swindon last weekend.

Bridges is an decent player at this level - he was on loan at Carlisle last season but I'm not sure I'd have him here in front of the likes of Byfield. As whilst being a decent player (who would be on big wages) I don't think he would work as well as the likes of Byfield would playing alongside Pawel. Having said that I suppose there is no harm in looking provided him being here doesn't stop us signing players in more key positions.

Im very confused now, if your going to take a chance on bridges might aswell give a go to o'grady, probably costs less in wages aswell.

also again another striker and midfielder, thats 4 strikers and around 7 mid players but no centre half :S

hope he has something lined up and he is just not sharing

O'Grady?

Please! He's garbage and we are well shut of him.

Blackman showed more promise on Saturday than O'Grady ever did here.

bridges. no thanku! im sick of these has beens.

Hmm, not sure on that one myself. He was always about skill, not pace or strength. He's unlikely to have lost that.

'When was the last time he had a bad injury?' I guess is the question. If it is a while then I would not be against a move for him.

Yes, but seem as half our lot compare everyone to Andy Ritchie, who the hell does?

Well said that man. I would be suprised and somewhat confused if Penney didn't sign at least 1 more CB as he seems to be strengthening everywhere else, time'll tell, he has til Tues 5pm.....

Chron reporting that we are interested in taking 18 year old midfielder Mitchell Bryant, and striker Michael Bridges is also wanted.

No mention of a centre half!!!

Bridges has hardly been prolific in the last few seasons,a wasted talent in his case it seems.

Imo we need a goalscorer to share the load with abbott. Someone out there must surely know how to put the ball in the onion bag!
