davebuckley06 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Surely after yesterday we have to stick with baxter in center mid where he can influence the game. He gets left isolated up front but in the middle he can dictate the game and make things happen for us. Keep smith and simspon up top. Gives us the option of playing football and the option of playing long to smith when we need to plus running from deep baxter will get a lot of second balls of smith (sounds a bit wrong that last bit) Quote
Hands on Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Yes the 4 3 1 2 worked well. I suppose it is what they would call a diamond and we have the players to do it. I'm not sure I like giving up on out and out wing play but it worked. Quote
opinions4u Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 I'm not sure it's his best position. But two up top, especially if one of them is Smith, is better. I'd go with a narrower three in the middle. Quote
losesome Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 The cup matches have proved that if you get men in the box you will score. Look at the goals we have scored in the cup , virtually everyone has been from crosses with 3 or 4 others in the box. Latics 3rd goal yesterday wouldn't have been scored in the league because when the ball came in there would have only been Smith trying to get on the end of it. Why can't we do that in the league , not saying play like that but at least get men in the box where you have half a chance of scoring !!!! Quote
davebuckley06 Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 Well thats the good thing with baxter in the middle. You know he will get forward so we know we will have at least two if not three in the box. Attack is the best form of defence. Plus when we actually bother attacking wiyh numbers were actually quite good at it Quote

rudemedic Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 The 4-3-1-2 worked a treat yesterday as Liverpool were very narrow and after 30 minutes Sterling couldn't make another tackle in case he got sent off. Essentially we ended up with Wes, Winchester, Croft and Baxter against Joe Allen and Henderson. Only when they brought Gerrard on did they look close to getting something out of the midfield battle. Against some of the sides we've played this season we would get slaughtered as they have made with 2 genuine wingers and full-backs who are good going forward. What Dickov needs to realise is that picking from a core of 14 or so players every week is what the good teams do but the really great teams play 11 of those players in such a way as to give them the best chance of winning the game.
