Really brings back the memories, things were much better back then. oh aye much better.hahahah like having to brush the snow off the rochdale road end before games, that was a killer. and the constant worry at the back of the chaddy that the floor would collapse at any moment,it was soooooooooooo springy back then.lol

It really did feel unsafe, I dont think you'd get that past the HSE these days.
leezyverpunk
Call me old fashioned but this is what grounds should look like - raw and terraced - priced for the working class, only for the hard weather beatened fanatics. I only started going about 82 but it was about the same as the film - that's when grounds were grounds - non of this namby pamby all covered all seated atmosphere-less drivel of today!!! Harry Dowds Green Shirt
Nice one Stipey , quality find Could be Harry Dowd ? Strange that you think that exile, as I thought so myself when I first watched the clip and had to rewind to make sure. In those days I was still helping out Harry Wood with the pitch at times and the picture does look uncannily like me or at least how I remember myself. Strange when you look back, but even stranger when someone recognises a picture of your back from 28 years ago. You probably recognised me because I was a fast runner in those days and everyone was always behind me. I remember at around that time when Brian Clough was manager of Forest and we played them in a midweek league cup game. As the teams came off the pitch, Cloughie came up to Harry Wood at the top of the tunnel and asked him to wait until he came out of the dressing room. Harry was furious when Cloughie took an age to come out as he wanted to go and lock up to get away for last orders. Anyway, Cloughie eventually emerged, thanked Harry for waiting and informed him that his players had said that the Boundary Park surface was the finest they had ever played on. Some compliment at the time from the great man himself. Harry actually thought he was going to get a b*llicking from Cloughie. Strange that really as well, because when John Platt broke his leg in a pre season friendly against (I think) Sheffield United, the pitch was blamed as being too Lush as John's Studs had got caught in the surface as he twisted. By the way stipey great find.
peanuts
thanks for that, i used to love those old blue press boxes, gave the ground a bit of distinction, less room for the fans though. the ford stand would only be about 6-7 years old then, what a bit of film for the future eh. they werent press boxes tho they were "executive" boxes apparently the first in the english leagues inroduced in 60s bye a certain mr bates im told . They were converted and extended from the press box into 'executive' boxes. From that little acorn Ken Bates developed Chelsea Village. StipeTripe
Looked through quite a few of 'em last night. Wow how things have changed, looking at the old Den it is as caged and fenced off as I remember it, and that was before they made clubs do that. Ewood is unrecognisable, the dark cramped Darwen End and that concrete monstrosity at the home end, I'd forgotten about that. Spotland and Gigg have really changed. Me and me mate used to go on and off to Bury or Rochdale when Latics were away, well they were only a 2p bus ride away. First went to Bury in '76 or '77 not long after I started going to BP. Saw my first violence there, they were playing Pompey and the only noticeable Pompey fans were a couple of gobby neds in the Cemetery End who got a good shoeing and no mistake! Spotland was just like that on me first visit, Boxing Day '77, me mates Dad refused to drive to Hull (we fumed for days cos we won 1-0 its etched on my mind) so instead we went to see Dale v Wimbledon, it was their first season in the league and I do believe Dave Basset played for them. We stood on the grassy knoll to the right of the Main Stand as you looked at the pitch (H&S wouldn't allow that now). A solitary Dons scrote was chased mercilessly for what seemed like the whole game, from one end to the other. Anyway I thought some of the old readers would like it, like a say a pure fluke in spotting it, but I thought it needed sharing.

leeslover
Happy memories as a youth of feeling my internal organs rise towards my mouth as a surge through me into one of those barriers on the Chaddy. There were more fields back then I think.

StipeTripe
One of my most (un) memorable away experiences meeting the "F Troop" along with Wet Spam and bumping into the "ICF" I've mentioned it before but the first time I went to Cold Blow Lane there were approx 70 Latics fans there**, 52 of them on the solitary Barlows coach I was on. At the end of the game they escorted us out behind the away end, when I say they I mean half the Met, we must have had 3-4 coppers per Latics fan! The following week we were at Palarse and there was about 300 Latics there, I only mention this again cos nobody, in all the times I've posted this on MB's, has ever been able to explain why **Although I don't know him from Adam, Help Shiny can corroborate this as I believe he was on the same Barlows Edited November 14, 2007 by StipeTripe
